In this 'Maggie Moment' mum of four boys, Australian parenting author, educator and resilience specialist Maggie Dent talks about the challenges for mums raising boys in the pre-teen/early teen years. With no experience of boyhood themselves, mums can often misunderstand what's happening for their boys as they go through body, hormonal and brain changes that can create confusion for our lads. Maggie offers simple strategies to help you walk beside your son even as he might be pushing you away.
This is part 1 of 2. Watch second part here: • Boys & Mums: the tween...

Thank you for these important reminders. Being a mom is brutal. You love them so much that it tears you apart at times.

I am currently dealing with this! My son went from sweet, kind, thoughtful 9yr old boy to a raging, anxiety, moody 10 year old. Things didn't start getting bad till now lol.. it seems like it was overnight but it happened little by little. First talking back, We're currently trying to help him get control over his emotions/thoughts and help him be less pessimistic. This comment was written 2 years ago, Please tell me it gets better.

You hit the nail on the head - I have asked my son why he gets so angry and more at me and his reply was on the line of ‘ because I love you’. So hard as you worry that will continue to be like that into adulthood.

This is what I needed to hear and take in right now. My son is 2 weeks away from turning 11 and I go through questioning myself with how I'm bringing him up at least weekly. One night he was crying heavily and said he "wanted mommy".. my husband couldn't help console him whatsoever! My son cuddled up to me on my bed and I just held him as he cried because of a dream he had where I was injured in a car wreck. I cried along with him and just spoke positively to make him smile. It's moments like that I think about when he becomes defiant or doesn't listen that I gold onto, because I know deep down the love is strong. Sometimes though lol it feels the opposite. Your video helped put things into a better lens on how mums can video and handle our young kiddos! Thank you ❤️

I don’t know how to be ridiculous with my kids anymore ... I really don’t have the energy to play with them “physically or act silly with them ... I can sit and color , build lego , etc but the rough play or playing catch etc I’m so not that person what do I do

Masturbation also starts at around this age so be wary when you enter your sons room without knocking.

Technically a teen but mentally more inclined with a tween. 14-15 is generally when adolescents begin the middle stage of puberty (which last from 14-17) aka what we normally think of when we say teenagers.
