019 - Covalent Bonding
In this video Paul Andersen explains how covalent bonds form between atoms that are sharing electrons. Atoms that have the same electronegativity create nonpolar covalent bonds. The bond energy and bond length can be determined by graphing the potential energy versus the distance between atoms. Atoms that share electrons unequally form nonpolar covalent bonds.

Also, not sure if he emphasized enough that ionics do NOT conduct when solid (ions locked in place in crystal lattice), though, yeah, they do when dissolved in water (freely-roaming ions). Dang. Just realized I'm responding to a seven-year old reply.

Great question. Electronegativity is calculated by measuring the action of atoms in a molecule. Since these noble gases can form molecules with a highly electronegative element like Fluorine, an electronegativity value can be calculated.

To what extent can you tell if a molecule uses covalent bonding or ionic bonding solely by looking at what elements are involved? Can you do the same for metallic bonding?

At 5:00 min. you discuss non-polar bonds with examples and characteristics of polar bonds. A student strongly discussed with me about teaching incorrectly polar and non-polar bonds. He said non-polar bonds are the bonds with charges and polar bonds do not have charges and talked about non-polar hydrochloric acid dissolving in non-polar water. I know this is an older video but thought I would point this out in case you wanted to correct it. You talk about the large difference in the elements electronegativities but refer to it as a non-polar covalent bond.

HCl is polar because Chlorine is more electronegative than Hydrogen, thus creating a polar bond between H and Cl.

Excuse me Mr. Anderson but why would hydrogen only like to have 2 more valence electrons (like what you said at 2:33)? I thought every element wants to have 8 valence electrons, so then shouldn't hydrogen like to have 7 more valence electrons or give up its 1 valence electrons?

@teehee98nixie hydrogen is the exception. most atoms do want 8 valence electrons. but hyrdogen only wants to. the same goes for helium. since you only need two valence to fill up the first electron shell/energy level

Why is carbon dioxide a non-polar bond if their electronegativity differences are so large?
@ManukumarRudresh
@ManukumarRudresh 8 жыл бұрын
In CO2, the polar covalent bonds are symmetrically arranged in the molecule which makes the charges on each sides to cancel out. This makes the molecule to be a nonpolar covalent molecule.
