If you’re reading the comment section for that ambiguous part of the video in 4:21 Then go back for the arrow symbol explained where the encircled point indicates the magnetic field going towards you whilst the encircled cross sign indicates that it goes away from you (see 1:00) Note: Middle Finger Indicates Magnetic Field or B You see the magnetic field direction (encircled points) changes after the first moving charge example (the one that is inclined to the left) into encircled cross (means magnetic field goes away from you) which was the next example that twisted yo mind. He even said “Now we have a different magnetic field” in 4:11 Then go apply Fleming’s right hand rule and it will now make sense Thank you so much for this Mr. Andersen BTW

Rani Andleeb I’m not too sure but I think the right hand is for protons and the left hand is for electrons.
@AlineInGreen
@AlineInGreen 5 жыл бұрын
@Rani Andleeb because the charge of an electron is opposite to a proton so the "current" is technically flipped. As he said in the video, you could use the same hand as a proton and flip the end result OR you can use the opposite hand

Thank you for this! I'm a bit confused as to how a permanent magnet works based off the explanation here -- wouldn't a permanent magnet that's not moving (relative to a charged particle) exert a magnetic field, and wouldn't the charged particle feel that field even though neither are moving relative to each other?

As far as I know, the right hand should be magnetic force on the thumb, magnetic flux on the first finger and current (I.e velocity of the charged particle) on the middle finger. How come it's the opposite for the first and second fingers at 3:24?

@AlineInGreen
@AlineInGreen 5 жыл бұрын
The way you wrote them is for the left hand. Using the right hand you have to use the middle finger for the magnetic field and the index for current (velocity of positive charge) . For negative charge you flip the result or use the other hand. . Stick to one rule but keep in mind which fingers are which vectors for each hand. . Again Left hand rule for positive charge is Thumb = Force Index = magnetic field Middle finger = velocity of the positive charge . Right hand rule for positive charge: Thumb = Force Index = velocity of the positive charge Middle finger = magnetic field

You know what’s funny , I feel videos like this and tv shows on science are much better at educating for one reason , they rely on viewership for the video/show’s success. They make much more of an effort making sure you understand it then most textbooks , because physics in education doesn’t rely on people passing , and as for taking the class you have to take it so they don’t rely on people taking the class for the success of the class (payday). The language in my textbook complicates this so much it is actually unbelievable . Just some thoughts I had, thank you good sir.

From 5:24 The red vector is B, magnetic field strength (since it's a vector it comes with direction. So B, field strength, has information about the magnetic field strength and the direction of the strength) The blue vector is V, the velocity (another vector). The pink vector is the force on the positive or negative test charge

I may be wrong but i think it's very important to emphasize that when we be dealing with electron which has a negative charge, we should mandatory use the left hand. As the professor said you can also use your right hand as long as you turn the force around when you're done but to me, you should just use the most "accurate hand" for each particle.
