In this video I'm showcasing a typical mid 1960's scene on the railway with BR Standard 9Fs and a Stanier 8F hauling heavy freight trains, a sight so common at the time that it was difficult to believe that this would all come to an end within a few years.
The models shown here are Hornby all dating from the early 2000's and all have had a factory applied 'weathered' finish. On one of the 9F's I have added an additional level of detailed weathering of differing textures and hues to realise and emphasize the external condition and neglect that characterised steam locomotives in the final years of steam. The two 9F's are slightly different. One is paired with a BR1C tender and has a single chimney whilst the other is paired with a BR1G tender and has a double chimney.
Thank you for watching.

Brilliant!!! Heavy freight does it for me every time, especially those 9f Beasties.

A definite improvement on the factory blow over. I remember saving for ages for one of those weathered 9Fs and couldn't find any when the time came

Thank you for your observation. You should be able to find some on Ebay at reasonable prices. I have three of them, all 'as new'. As to the weathering, I wouldn't attempt to weather a pristine looking one. The model would require to be sprayed matt black/dark grey as a base coat before applying the weathering you see here,

@@crewelocoman5b161 funnily enough thats what I did years later! I frequently weather pristine models though I use powders.

It's amazing really. According to the "modelling" community these models are all old and therefore terrible and need replacing. Amazing what a lick of paint and a bit of detailing will do! Nice to see some ACTUAL modelling, not just buying everything premade and arranging it on a board.

Hi, As always. great to get your insights on matters pertaining to model railways! Yes, I suppose they are old, twenty years or so. I have to say that I have never been enthusiastic about weathering locomotives. All three locos seen here are 'factory' weathered. The 'brown' 9F, I have had a long time and has been up here on many occasions. The other 9F is a recent acquisition. It too was a factory weathered, this time a greyish covering. I was unaware that Hornby had done a second 9F like this. As it had a base matt weathered finish I felt it had the potential for further 'embellishment' shall we say. I used weathering powders which I have to say are fantastic. Easy to use and very quick to apply unlike painting which would ruin the look altogether. Having said all that, I would never attempt to weather a pristine finished loco. First off, I would have to spray it a matt black/dark grey base as the powders won't bind onto a satin/shiny surface. It's all good stuff!

Fantastic Graeme, the weathering is superb on all the rolling stock especially the 9F’s 😊

@@TERRYBIGGENDEN Hi, The two 9Fs were both factory weathered. The one hauling the oil tankers I've had a long time and haven't done anything further with. The other 9F is a recent acquisition, also factory weathered, this time in a flat greyish covering. I added a further layering and blending of weathering on top of that using weathering powders. Very easy and quick to use. The oil tankers are the old Tri-ang gaudy yellow 'Shell' and plastic red 'Texaco' from the 1970s I bought in a job lot, which I sprayed matt black, applied bespoke transfers (haz-chem, brandings etc) then finished off with blended layering using weatering powders. Again, very quick and straightforward. The mineral wagons (and hoppers not in this video) are much earlier attempts at weathering using a dry brush technique and using my thumb to rub down and replicate rust streeks, and ingress on the body sides. Wagons are Bachmann (some had their own factory applied weathering, a 'puffed' like appearance which I went over, a couple I left). There's also about 8-10 Dapol ex- Airfix construction kits. Using paints takes longer and will always give the impression that it has been painted on! Always use a dry brush technique to overcome that. Final observation: always carefully study actual colour photos of the real things. I've seen too many attempts at weathering where this has not been the case!🤥

Lovely video and can I ask if you are using Daytime Batten lights for your layout room . I have to say the lighting looks so natural.

Hi, Many thanks indeed for your comments and observations. TBH, I don't know what the fluorescent tubes are. It's a converted garage with additional windows put in on one side. I covered the insides of the windows with an anti U/V filter. Even on the brightest of days I have to put the lights on to highlight the layout. Hope that helps. Graeme
