I loved how Rossy picks up the dropped drumstick without pausing the performance. That's a pro!

It’s hard to overstate how exciting this trio was during the late 90s early 00s era.

That's my favorite trio aside of Keith Jarrett . That drummer Rossi was so great , so innovative .

Brad Mehldau lost something irreplaceable when Jorge left. I've seen the modern incarnation of the trio with Jeff Ballard, and Ballard's playing, whilst interesting, just doesn't come close.

+Adam D Fully agree. Jorge was pure creativity. Great technique too...but who cares ? The trio lost a whole dimension when he left.

+Adam D I don't want to start an argument but for me it's the other way round. I've found a lot of Jorge's playing to be very monotonous and far too dominated by the ride cymbal, I don't mind that style though, one of my favourite drummers is Tony Williams. I like Jeff Ballard more because his playing utilises all of his instrument but maybe I'm missing something in Jorge's approach as a pianist I focus primarily on what Brad is doing. With all that said I love Jorge's solo at the start here, that is what great jazz is about, the spirit of the moment.

***** Yeah, I see what you mean actually, I've been listening to the Live album with Brad's new trio and while Jeff's playing is tight and does some great solos, Jorge did have a greater connection with Brad and Larry's music.

Agreed. It's such a perfect sound. I love Jeff Ballard, but think this is the best Trio era.
@KermitHitler4 жыл бұрын
Ballard is boring as fuck to listen to, ultra clean, tidy, perfect, antiseptic, bereft of swing Jorge was wild, unpredictable, earthy, swingin as all hell Thats the difference

Fantastic. Comparing this with the album recording it has so many new ingredients. Loved the way Brad held everything up this time and then let go with so much fire. Great trio. And maybe the answer to the old/new trio question is drug-related.

Pretty sure he was getting off drugs around the time of this recording.

Also, great description of his solo arc. He did hold so much back, that’s what I love about his improvising. He knows how to tell a good story.

Has anyone found the full concert? It looks like it's from a broadcast of the North Sea Jazz Festival and judging by Brad's past tours this looks like it would be July 11 1997 however I can't find any video of the full concert.
