The Kinks have to be the most underrated band of all time. These guys made outstanding music for decades. The amazing thing about them is the diversity of sound. Compare this song to "Come Dancing," or "This Time Tomorrow." You might think it was 3 different bands. Just incredible!

I completely agree with you saying The Kinks are the most underrated band of all time. When you put their music up against their contemporaries, so that's The Beatles, Stones and Who (among others), it's the other groups that sound left behind.

They were different. They had never broken is the US except for those two early singles were sort of nowhere and forgotten. A desperate Ray agreed to go under the Clive Davis thumb and go soft rock AOR with every song and production decided by Clive. So they had a new career. They hate all those songs but they finally made big money.

The Beatles were harder edged band in leather jackets before their manager cleaned them up with suits so they could be commercially successful, and would never have made it if they hadn't done so and gotten rid of sloppy beat Pete Best in favor of Ringo on drums who was already a pro musician in another band. the Beatles wrote cutesy tunes on purpose to become successful in the teen market. They could rock out, but did what they knew they had to do to become successful. I'm not saying their guitar skills were as good as others who came along after they broke the door down though. They were just very diverse and evolved. Remember Decca records turned them down saying guitar bands were on the way out, hahahha.

@@scottfrench4139 I Feel Fine was released at the end of the year. It's one song and it wasn't like they were playing anything quite that raucous or rowdy. Twist and Shout was about as raunchy as those 64 tracks got and yes I know that was actually recorded in 63.

When this came out it was the best song on the radio!, as it was a fun, crank it up song! The newer generations have no way of comprehending how new this was to us at the time, as the younger folks have newer music to compare it to being the 80’s, 90’s and on, and have tendencies to make light of older technology and overall quality of music during the sixties.

This song definitely is a great example of the punk sound before that was a whole genre. It came out in '64, before guitar effects were a thing and people would damage the speakers in their amplifiers and turn the volume all the way up to make the guitar sound distorted.

You're in my wheelhouse now. The Kinks were just a little more raw than the rest of the British Invasion (although The Who Live at Leed's was arguably pre-punk). The Kinks went on to show a depth that was unexpected (e.g. Lola and Come Dancing).

the kinks are very underrated and under appreciated. song's like "sunny afternoon," "plastic man," "a well respected man," "lola" and "victoria" are very distinctive and original social commentaries. and remember "(wish i could fly like) superman?" and their cover of "long tall sally" is very kinkish! they also had a christmas song called "father christmas." "dead end street" and "apeman" are still two of my favorite kink songs. both songs are, sadly, still relevant today. "apeman" is how i want to live. free from corporate greed and their technological slavery! ray davies was a remarkable song writer! thank you kinks for the lifetime of joy you gave me!

THE GREATEST rock song ever.... Consider when it was recorded, 1964! All that heavy distortion, driving drums, vocals pushing ahead, raucous solo. I actually think it's "happy" as far as raw jubilation at the power of attraction, desire and love. It's not lamenting loss of love, which most find easier to make hard hitting songs out of, but being in love...

This is one of rock's greatest singles of all time. You have to image the sixties beginning to take off, with emerging bands like the Beatles and Stones etc and the kind of parents music that went a year or so before - lots of American and British crooners (parent's music). This song was revolutionary for young British kids. On hearing it for the first time, I left childhood behind and became a teenager. Remember thinking, 'I want some of that'.

Yes the "beginnings: of that but IMO unintentional, just different from anything in the context of the times. You can trace a lot of things back to the blues artists even in the 1920's. Or WC Handy's Saint Louis Blues song from 1914. I just like looking at the bigger musical evolutionary picture rather than being trapped in metal head land.

I love it when you both, especially Lex, perked up during that solo guitar "Power Chord", played by 17 year old Dave Davies. That type of chord was invented by the Kinks, played by 17 year old Dave Davies, who is the younger brother the the lead singer/song writer Dave, and is also featured on "You Really Got Me". I believe both songs were on the same 45. That invention by the Kinks and their proto-garage/punk style has influenced dozens of bands, even today, and set the foundations for Garage in the 60's and then Punk's emergence in the 70's.

The Kinks are a hindsight band that should have been considered as one of the all time greats. A true British gem that created a British sound to the world. Their lyrics are excellent and music style was ahead of its time. There are so many bands (UK in particular) that are influenced by the Kinks and I cannot thank them enough for trailblazing so many genres due to their unique style. In homage to them, many bands have covered their songs such as Van Halen & The Pretenders. You can hear their influence in the 90s BritPop bands, notably Blur & Oasis.

That lead guitar break in the middle is considered a classic by serious rock guitarists. Joe Perry, of Aerosmith, and Jeff Beck, among others, say they wish they’d come up with it. This, and other songs by the kinks, inspired a lot of garage rock bands. In a sense you’re right he does want to take the relationship farther. However you seem to see it as simping, a bad thing. It’s really romantic for the time, a good thing.

Oh how we loved this song! At every dance and party. He is just expressing his love for her ... he wants to be with her all of the time. Real simple, real innocent. Remember, you are putting today's "ways" and thoughts to our music from a different time. Not aggressive ' Rock n Roll !!

Welcome to the ORIGIN of rock music. This is the first time ever that a distorted guitar sound was heard on record. Kinks guitarist achieved this sound by taking a razor blade to the cone of his amp's speaker to make it buzz and fuzz like it did. In '64, it just wasn't possible to get this kind of distortion from an amplifier normally. After this though the legendary Mr Jim Marshall decided to design and build an amp that would distort this way without the need for vandalism lol. Thus heralding the birth of two legends, Rock music and it's most iconic symbol, the Marshall amp. So, inadvertently The Kinks, a MOD band, created the blueprints for the music of their then enemies the Rockers.

This song, and their other 1964 classic, *"You Really Got Me",* were arguably the first 2 hard rock songs. Some might say, "Louie, Louie", from 1963 was first, but I don't think that song quite qualifies. But it's close.

Brad you are so right about how a girl feels when BF wants too much too soon. Whenever I hear The Kinks lately- no matter the song- all other bands fade and I'm thinking, "it's these guys...The Kinks are IT for me...turn me over cause I'm DONE. LOL...LOVE The KINKS sound...one of my top 5 concerts ever and don't get me started on Dave Davies...💞

On their song "You Really Got Me," guitarist Dave Davies took a razor blade to the speaker cone of his Elpico practice amp. Then he ran it into the front end of a Vox AC-30 amplifier as a pre-amp/proto distortion device. He used the same set up for this song.
