When I was 16 living in Newport Maine, there was a family from Mass who had a vacation home three houses down. She was 17 and I had never really been with a girl before. I loved the Commodores and we kinda hung out together, kissing, touching and otherwise having fun and the music we were listening to was the Commodores and Foreigner... I haven't heard this for 40 years but if I close my eyes and get a word or two prompt I can sing the lyric.

That's funny. Around that same time I was a kid who was born in Massachusetts and moved up to Dexter and became a life long musician. There was some amazing musical talent in the high schools of a four town area of central Maine. Many you've heard on the radio playing with major acts. I was in Jazz band with Jeff Coffin of Dave Mathews and Bela Fleck. Also a kid who went on to be Buddy Guy's bassist. The Mower brothers of Saint Albans are pro horn players. Crazy.

I discovered this song about 5 years ago when it played on a "Oldies" radio station. Few songs stop me in my tracks, but I had to tell everyone in the car to be quiet until the song stopped playing. it is a remarkable piece of musicianship! I still listen to it often. I strongly suggest listening to NIGHT SHIFT by the Commodores. Amazing tune!

Lol. Lionel is from the South. Alabama. He's def country. Lot of his music has country music influences, especially in his solo career.. The Commodores were a huge band during the '70s and early '80s. Many hits. Funk, R&B band. But also had poppy/soft rock/ country crossover songs , too. Some of the songs even charted on the country music top charts. Ritchie went solo after they broke up. He's a great singer. Also has many friends from the country music circle like Kenny Rogers, Tim McGraw, Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, etc. Brad is right about the country R&B crossover, BTW.

Let's not forget that the commodores are from tuskegee, alabama. So, when they were growing up, they would have heard Motown, James brown alongside hank Williams, porter wagoner and other country music artists. Here is a fun fact for you: Lionel Richie produced a whole Kenny Rogers album called Share your love back in 1981!

Having thought about it I have concluded that the 'HE SINGS?' headline comes from the fact that Brad and Lex thought Lionel was an actual Commodore. 'Heave to, men!' he would declare. All six of the original Commodores were "small town boys" who met while attending Tuskegee University. In fact they were the best musicians from two bands that broke up. They didn't even have a new band name when they went to audition for Motown. As the story goes, Walter "Clyde" Orange (drummer, co-lead singer) opened a dictionary and scrolled down the page and announced, "The Commodores, we are the Commodores." The other five agreed - the rest is musical history. Sail On & Easy both made the Billboard Country Music chart.

The Pointer Sisters won a Grammy for country music in the 1970s for their song "Fairytale". There's also been quite a few Black singers who are exclusively country or R&B artists who released country flavored songs such as Charley Pride, Big Al Downing, DeFord Bailey, Linda Martell, Ruby Falls, Ebony Hillbillies, Cleve Francis, O.B. McClinton, Joe & Odell Thompson, LaMelle Prince, Whistler's Jug Band, Ivory Joe Hunter, Stoney Edwards, Carolina Chocolate Drops, McDonald Craig, Chapel Hart, Ray Charles, Little Richard, Millie Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Joe Simon, Swamp Dogg, The Supremes, Darius Rucker (from Hootie & The Blowfish), Sir Mix-A-Lot, Nelly, etc. There's an album from 1994 called "Country, Rhythm & Blues" that features collabos with R&B and country artists. Zydeco music is also popular with some of the country audience. Some country artists in the 1970s even did songs with funk, R&B, & disco elements like Ronnie Milsap & Barbara Mandrell. "Lady" by Kenny Rogers and "Southern Nights" by Glenn Campbell got R&B radio airplay.

Yep, I agree with Brad, this was the best breakup song I ever heard coming from a man who’s decided he’s out, I’m packing up and leaving, sail on honey, good times never felt so good! It’s always sung the other way around from women leaving a man , but you rarely got the song from a man’s view. That’s the point when you glad you are single again and can’t wait to go out and have good time and meet other women. And oh yeah, we were surprised back then that a funky soul group like them was actually doing a country song, but it was good! Lionel wrote the song “Lady” for country pop superstar Kenny Rodgers also …

Lionel Richie has one of the smoothest singing voices of all time. He has written so many great songs, and many that defy genre. He does have a little twang in his voice at times, being from a small town in Alabama (as I am, also). He soaked up so many musical influences when he was young, and this led to his ability to create music that often crossed genres.

Lionel Ritchie was a key member to their success. When he went solo in the early 1980's, everything he wrote and performed turned to A-1 gold! Incredible songwriter. A few years ago at a music ceremony that aired on TV, they had a Commodores/ Lionel Richie tribute played by a country music singer. You guys hit the nail on the head hearing the country music in this song.

One the best from the Commodores, love this song. I never got any country from it, it's pop soul to my ears.

Wow, the evolution... B&L started a small channel just reacting to hip hop songs and now look, she's wearing an Iron Maiden shirt listening to easy 70s songs... great road of discovery guys =)

At this time country blues and soul were converging in mainstream music. Also a little ballad flavor too. Things were changing so much at that time.

haha I love this reaction. I've known the song for SOOO long that it shocked me to hear Brad's opinion, it's so spot on!! He's right, the lyrics are like hey we tried, here's your name back, see ya sugar, I'm lookin for a good time and you. are. not. it. This song brings back so many childhood memories I got chills up and down my arms hearing it just now. Reminds me of when my cousin was a young teen and danced and lip synced to this song using the fireplace hearth as a stage and she had us all cracking up! omg you guys thank you!!

There are so many great Commodores and Lionel songs. But I really recommend 'Nightshift' which was their great song after Lionel left the band to go solo.

Lionel Richie is one of the biggest pop stars of the past five decades, but did you know he has also scored country hits? Richie began his career as a member of the Commodores, who scored a string of hits in the '70s with mellow Richie ballads including "Easy," "Three Times a Lady," "Sail On" and more. The multi-genre success of those records made Richie an in-demand songwriter for other artists, and in 1980, Kenny Rogers asked him to write a song for his upcoming Greatest Hits album. The result was "Lady," which became one of Rogers' biggest career hits, landing at No. 1 across multiple genres, including Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart. I bet you didn't know that! God bless you.

One of my favorite Commodores songs. It starts out country and evolves into Christopher Cross-like yacht rock. Love the trumpets in that section.

The boys from Alabama! I got to meet them and hang out back stage with them in 1980. That country twang is real. When not singing lead Lionel was the saxophone player and also played keyboards. The other main songwriter who deserves a lot of credit for the bands success was the guy on drums Walter Orange. Walter sang a bunch of their songs including Brick House

Lionel Ritchie and Friends was a concert by country singers honoring him and singing all his hits. He actually sings this song with Tim McGraw.. Great concert. Your right, all his songs could be country. Happy New Years!!!
