The early 90's had a huge psychedelia revival - it's why the whole Austin Powers thing even happened. This wave came, as usual, mostly from the UK (Stone Roses, Soupdragons, Happy Mondays and many other bands) but didn't really hit the dance floor until Dee-Lite landed like a bombshell.

Gen-X metalhead here: when the bass player pops up, and the immediate reaction is _not,_ "HOLY SHIT! THAT'S BOOTSY COLLINS!" then I can't help but feel that there are absolutely unacceptable gaps in your pop culture education, kids. Shockingly unnacceptable. Or I've overestimated the reach of funk in this world. I doubt that, but I admit it's a possiblility. But... But when the Gen-X metalhead knows Bootsy Collins and the young black reactors _don't,_ I feel my age, and that cold, little chill down my spine that is Death herself whispering directly into my heart: _"Soon."_

This song is such a mix-and-match of so many eras, styles, sounds, tunes--it's the brilliant crazy genius of it. Back in the day this song was EVERYWHERE and it would fill the dancefloor at any club, party, wedding, picnic, bar mitzvah, school dance, whatever. This one got everybody dancing no matter who they were, where they came from, what kind of music they were normally into.

The three main people are DJs who made this house song in 1990... Lady Miss Kier, DJ Towa Tei, and DJ Dmitry. Bootsy Collins shows up from time to time and A Tribe Called Quest's Q-Tip does the mid-song rap. It was really big and was played a *lot*... everywhere.

These guys are so underrated. They may have been a one hit wonder to the pop charts, but anyone who loved house and dance music in the 90s knew they had dozens of great songs. I love 1:19! You can tell Lex is starting to feel this sick rhythm! This video was unique even back in the day. They had that B-52s vibe that was very 90s post-punk. There weren't a lot of groups going this path at the time, so the groups that did has an almost cult-like following. I STILL dig this sound! Junior Senior's song "Move Your Feet" is another really funky listen people should check out if you liked this song. Keep on dancing, people! 💃🏾🕺🏼

Deee-Lite was definitely ahead of their time. Some of their music still sounds remarkably fresh. They were technically a one-hit wonder, but they put out a lot more great stuff that's worth digging beyond the one song of theirs that broke out.

I saw them at the university of Buffalo where there was no stage. The just played in the middle of the campus center floor. There were only like 100 of us there and we just kinda formed a circle around them. I was 5 feet away from Bootsy Collins the whole show. I was in heaven.

This 21 year old friend of mine came to my house because I had a car and said "Do you want to go see this band called Deelite in Buffalo tonight?" Im like what are they like? He says I dunno how to describe them but they are fun and Bootsy Collins from P-Funk plays bass for them. Im like ok lets go. then 3 other people loaded in my car and we went to this show that very few people showed up for. 100% true story.

I subscribe to a number of reactors, and they're all fun to watch, but you two are by far the most entertaining, without question. Its the mix to your comments and the way you play off each other. Brad being so analytical and Lex being very in tune with the vibe, while you both frame the emotions and meaning in your own way....it just works really well and I hope you guys stay with it, because I think the sky's the limit for you!

This song was actually written and performed in the late 80's and released in 1990. Even then, when it came out everyone was like WTF. It was so retro and had such a great beat that it got airplay on regular pop stations. I was in my 20's then and loved it then as I do now. Any song that goes against the grain like this did always had my attention. You should look up Bootsy Collins to know more about him too. He's a legend.

There were a few years maybe 96-97 when the seventies came back hard, tie-dye everywhere, girls rocking bell-bottoms wearing hairbands and mood rings and chokers. I was just getting ready to get into high school. We spent most of our time at the skating rinks back then and this was one of the most played songs, this Cotton eye Joe and Macarena, oh and Mambo #5 lol.

Bootsie played for J.B. as a teenager. That's where he learned the different sounds and styles of playing that led to the phunk as we know it today. So yes the godfather of soul really gave birth to the funk sound with what he was doing with music at the time

Right on man you’re totally correct sounds very 70s in the 1990s. There was a huge social nostalgia for the 60s and you saw a lot of this expressed in style and in music. at almost 63 I remember, vividly Motown‘s effect on the music of my youth without groov and funk we would not have had half of the enjoyment we had in the 70s without them.

Historically speaking, Dee lite popped onto the music scene in the late eighties \early nineties; and yes, they had a retro feel. Many European bands at the time were getting nostalgic over 1970's musical styles, such as St. Etienne, Swing Out Sister, and Dee Lite. This when when House music was huge in the UK.

Man, I'm not even a dance music fan, and I've heard of Dee-lite. I was into rock, punk, metal and grunge back when this came out, and I still liked this song anyway. It's groovy. She is sexy and has a good voice. Dee-lite had a lot of good songs, actually.

Although this was recorded in the 90s it was a deliberate throwback to 60s psychedelia but with a more contemporary 'dance' feel. I loved it. 😍 Perhaps one of the first examples of what later was termed, 'retro' that summed up much of 90s culture. I remember thinking back then, the most notable thing about the 90s (in terms of music and culture) was the late 60s/70s.

This song is a MASTERPIECE! Actually, the whole - song and clip. They had the brilliance to slow down a Herbie Hancock' bassline! Let me repeat: they sampled a piece of a genius masterpiece, as Herbie Hancock is, and changed it to something incredible BETTER!!! Mixing bassline with drums and counting with the solar presence of Bootsy Collins and Maceo Parker, they made sure were the pure and precious source of Groove coming from. At the same time, they honored the incredible tv program "Soul Train" giving to them psychedelic colors. Sensational! Lady Kier - her voice and her energy was supreme, and the Russian and the Japanese guys are unique in their styles. Its been 32 years ago, and I still got chills every time I see that video... It's all smile, groove, life. Its all of mankind needs.

The beat they sampled was from Herbie Hancock. The bass player was Bootsy Collins - a legend. The lead singer Lady Kier used to show up in NYC and sell her 1960s psychedelic outfits, which she made herself as a fashion graduate. This song is so complex and fun, with so much talent. I loved it in the 1990s. Too bad they were a one hit wonder, because this song is "dee-licious".

A classic 90s tune- very original arrangement of samples and live instruments, singing and that wild video. This tune and "Love shack" were massive party tunes in the 90's. It's got a bit of a daisy age hip hop vibe with '70s (maybe '60s) samples. Your reaction to the video I think was similar to mine when I first saw it, from "what the hell is this" to "this is really fun"!
