The song is basically, as a kid you just accept life. It’s magical, joyful, in tune with the birds and nature. Then society “teaches” you how to part of the chaos. Pushing away your innocence. To me the song is about, Who am I underneath all this garbage society has put on top me? Who am I REALLY? Who would I be if I had been left alone, and continued to grow as an adult from the place of the little boy with the trees and one with nature, who would I be right now?

Without a society a human wouldnt be much more than an animal. There surely is a lot "garbage" in society... but also a lot wonderful stuff. For example... arts like this music ;)

@@BoothTheGrey Well ,we are social "animals" and have been for over 200K years. However, Gregory's take is still valid: what would be without undue influence of an overbearing, stifling, over-populated and cold world? You can be an artist without people telling you how to live and how to think. However, all of those people can't make you have talent.

@@paulf4802 If you dont like the word "animal" as showing difference... I give some examples, what you would have NOT without society: No language. No arts. No entertainment from external sources. No roots. No goals. And no training on whatever. So no understanding in whatever. How could anybody find out about his artist talent when there is no art? For me this is also very, very "cold" (well... not "cold" but just something I wouldnt wish at all for me). I do understand the critique of our modern world in which especially our economic system leads to many inhuman problems but also still a lot religious and/or political fundamentalism. Interestingly some artists think most problems are linked to technology. Or that we in industrialized countries would have any problem with "overpopulation" (although here in Germany we have really many people per square meter... no... overpopulation isnt an issue at all here). I really like also very critical arts about our world. But sometimes... I see it go a bit wrong. Maybe Roger Hodgson was really a "simple man". Maybe it was just poetry and everybody can put into the words whatever he wants to. Maybe I dont understand him and you. For me its very easy: Without society (and already just a familiy or a little clan is a society)... there is nothing your brain can learn from on such an intense level - not even close. Again: No language, (almost) no learning, (almost) no training, no understanding. And maybe its all my "problem" with your statements... cause... I really like to try to understand the world I live in :)

@@BoothTheGrey I don't there is anything wrong with your take on the world or that you have a "problem." Indeed, without other humans, we couldn't achieve as much without social learning or cues. Art without humans to appreciate it would not be art. We are social beings and evolved that way. We will evolve as human beings as the world changes, for better or for worse. It would be cold and lonely without other humans with which to socialize; however, a person can feel lonely in a crowded auditorium.

Musically and lyrically about as good as it gets. The meaning of the song questions the education system. Roger Hodgson said: "They teach us how to function on the outside and to be very intellectual, but they don't tell us how to act with our intuition & heart or give us a real plausible explanation on what life's about." So very true and it's why so many people grow up and become sheep.

The problem, and you articulate it perfectly, is that too many people expect too much. Education is primarily the responsibility of parents. The educational system adds book learning, maths, physics, history, parents don't know. It is the parent's job to teach their children about life.

Supertramp's Breakfast In America album is one of the all time great listens. Pretty much every song is a classic and you can just sit back without the need to skip a song. Perfection with songs like Goodbye Stranger, Breakfast in America, Take The Long Way Home etc..

Lyrical, vegetable, lol. Insightful reaction, guys! It describes the lead singer's experience of being sent away to a boarding school for 10 years, when he was young. They're a massively talented band, these guys. Great songwriters, lyricists & top notch musicians. Breakfast in America was a great LP, but my personal fav is Crime of the Century. Bloody Well Right is a bangin track from that one, & was a big single. Cheers!

So agree with you Ben. "Crime" is near progressive rock and a masterpiece in my opinion - but you need to listen to it front to back. Breakfast was one of my favorite albums when I was in college. Played it over and over.

MORE SUPERTRAMP!!!!! The most underrated band in history... "crime of the century" is a top 10 album of all time in my opinion. pure genius! Breakfast in America was loaded with hits. Start with "school" then "bloody well right" (one of my personal favs). Oh and brad/ the title track "crime of the century" is a great tune to add "questions in the mind"

I heard the Logical Song for the first time when I was in my teens - my darling Dad introduced me to Supertramp. At age 60 I still often 'say' to myself and to the universe "please tell me who I am". Supertramp were ahead of their time lyrically/musically... I still listen to their albums 'Crime of the Century' and 'Breakfast in America' and I'm still a Dreamer.

I think they really complement each other. Brad really follows the lyrics, and Lex really pays attention to the music. I mean they both do both... but they have their strengths.

@@coolworx Yes, exactly, these guys are the best reactors and have such a great temperament; Not that I've seen that many reactors. Each is clearly high IQ, good cognitive skills too, in the flexibility of their thinking, humility of their understanding of themselves and the capability of accepting each other's views, some of the maverick and insightful, without impulsive knee-jerk reactions and they actually build upon each other's thoughts.As a couple, they Complement each other, with Brad's clear raw realism and practical intelligence and Lex's abstract and intuitive, incisive thinking. If thhey stick together, long-term, they will undoubtedly be very successful

I think that solo is on a soprano sax. this instrument has a louder, raspier tone than clarinet. They say the sax as an instrument (not counting synths, vocoders, or other electronic modulated instruments) is the closest analog to a human voice.

They were so good musicians, on stage there were 5 saxophones, several guitars and basses, they changed them several times. The singer played also the piano. Real handmade music

I’ve returned to this song recently and it perfectly parallels the protests right now at universities- you start young and want to learn, you start learning, then you learn too much but keep human values which make you dangerous and difficult to control… “radical, liberal… criminal.” A song released 45 years ago still very relevant.

It was funny how he picked up on the word placement but couldn’t quite put his finger on it. Besides the rhyme clearly the words are chosen deliberately to make a point. The idea that the society that is trying to mold you and tell you who you are supposed to be would think “fanatical, liberal, criminal, radical” are all synonymous. And then when it’s from the singers point of view he equates the version of the “sensible, practical, logical” person he’s being molded into as being a “cynical vegetable”. It’s really clever word play and I’ve always connected with this song.

Its amazing on how this generation really studies the words of the songs. I was born in 1962 so I grew up with this music and we never broke down the songs like this, we just listen to the song a sang along with it. Back in the days you really at times never knew most of the words unless you read them on the back of an album or from the LP sleeve. We never had the option to watch it on youtube, in fact the only time you saw any performance if you caught the band on TV, American Bandstand, Soul Train, Midnight Special with Wolfman Jack or Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. We had no MTV back then. Enjoy our past it was wonderful.

This si a superb example of the talent that surfaced from the mid 60's into the mid 80's. So many of the bands (like this) relatively little known today. Roxy Music was another of my favourites. Fronted by Bryan Ferry, the smooooooooothest man on the planet. As said by others, Supertramps albums are a treat to the ears.

This is a good one. There’s a rhythm to the lyrics and poetic style in this song that Brad has picked up on I totally agree with. And Lex is always getting right up to the vibes of the song. Lex has her visceral relationship with each song. Two completely different approaches to music and often like the song for two completely different reasons. In the end what I really like is that you both are open to trying to understand the others response. You are definitely my favourite couple reactors. Opposites to some degree but so respectful of each other’s opinion. I like it. I like it a lot. Nice work.

Prog Rock is its own beast. Watching you 3 years after ... and having heard this over and over since I was 15 years old ... 35 years ago ... I love your reaction. Apart from that, I've fallen in love with you both: each of you representing a part of me when I listen to music. And for some reason I think I can see/feel that Lex has been to my country (Germany) in the past. But yeah... .I'm a few years older than the couple of you! But I have subscribed because your style seems to suit me!

There are 4 basic basic types of 🎷's. Soprano, alto, tenor, and a baritone. The one used in this song is a tenor saxophone.

its an alto bro. there are 4 standard or common types as you suggest. they arent more "basic" than the others ( sopranino, bass, contrabass, c-melody, f-mezzo, contralto, sopranissimo, subcontrabass, etc are all the same "basic" design.)

It's basically a song about how the "system" corrupts us all. Our world starts out as magical, beautiful, wholesome when we are young and devolves into something logical and structural, basically turning people from wonder to cynicism. Lyrically a great song and the music perfectly fits the lyrics by getting more an more hectic as the song goes on.

its a song about indoctrination. when he was young, life was something special. then they sent him away and taught him how to think and what to think. now he doesnt know who he is. and if he questions this, they call him a radical and such. its a logical song. espically when you understand the times we are in along with all the truth being shouted from the roof tops these days. last days. al truths being revealed and people are now waking up realizing they dont know nothing and are feeling lost and confused cause the world they were shown is not the real world. after you read this brad, rewatch the video and contemplate.

Supertrap was huge in the 70s. They did stadium tours and fans were part of the Supertramp Army. This song is one of their best. I suggest listening to "School" or "Sister Moonshine". My favorite is "Oh Darling", for sentamental reasons.

I was 8 when I saw them with my parents. Looking back now, it's funny to think of the drugs that were going down at this concert. Those weren't cigarettes 😅

Went to this concert (Breakfast in America tour) in 79 at Cobo Arena in Detroit. Brings back great memories. Not a bad song on the album. You’ll like them all. 👍🏻

Yes Lex, it was a sax, there are several different types “Soprano” (most commonly shaped like a clarinet), “Alto”, “Tenor”, “Baritone” and “Bass”. Most saxophone solo’s you’ve probably heard are “Tenor” saxophones, “Alto” saxophones are higher pitched which I played in High School (marching, pep, symphony and concert bands), “Soprano” saxes are higher pitched than “Altos”, played “Baritone” in Jazz Band, deeper tone than “Tenor” sax, same goes for vocalists ranges.

Supertramp’s music is absolute genius! Just listen to the composition and arrangement, oh and the lyrics! BTW, I think I’ve now found my favorite reaction channel. Brad looks like he’s always studying the material while Lex gets into the music. You play off of each other well. Funny thing, Brad reminded me of people “watching” the radio before TV was invented. But what does that make us, your viewers???😊

As songs often do, this song takes me back to about 1984 and looking after a game centre for teenagers (pinball and such) in Parramatta NSW (Australia) and one of the kids who I seemed to connect with kept asking for this song to be played (which I could select). It seemed to mean a lot to him and make him ask a lot of questions about where his life was going. Always a huge step when you are coming out of teenage years and approaching adulthood.. I always felt it was a very real and pertinent realisation for him that he connected with this track. I've always loved this track, but hearing it now I think probably Supertramp could've done even more with it (especially lyrically). Nonetheless i still enjoyed it and Brads reaction especially..

Met Roger at a New Years party on the first of January the winter after Breakfast in America came out in Yountville, CA(middle of Napa Valley) at one of the roadies on the tours Dad's house. He was one of the biggest rock stars in the world at the time and just sat around chilling and playing his guitar and most of the people there had no idea how how great a musician he was.

Very happy you did this song. Absolutely my favorite lyrics of any song. They follow the singer from childhood where he can just enjoy everything, to school where he learns, then to society where he can just go with the flow, but if he's not a follower, he's considered a subversive, so he's looking for guideance ... but at the end it seems like he's a follower, hence the "one two three five."

I saw Roger Hodgson (the singer here) in a solo concert in 2019, and he sang all the Supertramp songs. This one was huge so we were all singing along. The other one that got everyone up on their feet was 'It's Raining Again'. We're British, it's kind of our national anthem. This was one of those occasions when Brad got it completely and Lex didn't. I think he's going to be pondering this for a long time!

Their Breakfast in America tour was awesome and sticks with me all these years later. Saw them May 1979 in Ft. Worth, Texas and became an instant fan.
