Guys, its about one night stands. Nothing more, nothing less. Feel no sorrow, feel no shame. It's the life I've chosen, everyday. He wakes up in a new town and has to say goodbye to women all over again wondering if they will ever meet again.

When I was 13 years old here in Toronto, I went to the fair (CNE) and in one of those sideshow games where you win small, usually worthless prizes, I won my very first prize ever, a Supertramp Breakfast In America record lol. I had no idea who these guys were and pondered throwing it out somewhere so I can enjoy the rest of the evening at the fair but, thankfully, I held on to that thing for the rest of the night and the very next day when I finally put it on my parents ancient, cheesy, disco ball turntable, I was mesmerized at the beautiful sounds coming out of that thing. I think I listened to that record so many times, it turned white. One of the all time best rock albums, I'd rate it up there with Pink Floyd's Dark Side, Fleetwood Mac's Rumours etc.. fantastic band.

I went to the Exhibition stadium to see Supertramp in ‘83… so I was like.. how old?!! OMGGG i was 13 too!!!! Hahahaa! Small world.. 😜 Ya ya ya.. Supertramp is an intelligent band that incorporated a lot of traditional rock, pop rock, and art rock into their music. I always just labeled them as an art rock band along with another intelligent band called 10cc. It is well worth exploring their deeper cuts (both Supertramp & 10cc).

I was in 8th grade when "Breakfast in America" was released. My English teacher brought in song lyrics for songs as a way to help teach poetry to kids in a way that was relatable. At the time, all the kids thought here we go again, an adult trying to be cool. BUT, one day see came in with lyrics from this album. He told us his 17 year-old son recently purchased the album and after hearing the lyrics, he and his son had a deep conversation about many topics that concern parents and children, like drug use, heartache, etc. So he brought the lyrics into class. I remember discussing Child of Vision in particular, as a class exercise interpreting the meaning behind the lyrics. Just like you guys are doing in this reaction. I bought the album the next day. Yes, my 8th grade English teacher introduced me to Supertramp, and, consequently, Mary Jane too.

I lived with this song a really long time before reading the song's meaning according to the writer, Rick Davies. It's from the point of view of a man who has flings with women but doesn't want anything long term, no matter the opinion of the woman. When he moves on he wishes them well but refuses to feel bad about not staying.
@DivaInTheWoods
@DivaInTheWoods 2 жыл бұрын
I agree that's the most logical meaning, but the comments about quitting weed made me look for an explanation from Davies. I couldn't find anything directly from him. Do you remember where you read that? I would love to hear his version of the song. The fact that he specifically uses the names Mary and Jane, does make me think of references to pot. But it is just as logical to think it's just him saying goodbye to 2 different women he had a one-night stand with. The names are irrelevant and were commonly used to fill in any generic female, i.e. Jane Doe. That's why the "fling" scenario really makes the most sense. I'd just love to hear Davies' personal comment on it.

@Brian Johnston They WERE huge, but most people under 35 have never heard of them [or many of their contemporaries like the Little River Band, Kansas (beyond, "Oh! That song they used in 'Supernatural' a few times... that's Kansas?!?"), REO Speedwagon, and others]. To folks who think Foo Fighters is "Dad Music" and Nirvana is "back in the day" music, they have no idea who Supertramp are. When I said they deserved more props, I meant from more than the 55-and-older crowd who bought "Breakfast in America" on vinyl or cassette when it was a new album. I was a late-70s to 80s kid (high school class of 1986) and I knew the music of Fats Domino, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, the Coasters, Elvis Presley, the Beach Boys, etc. It's no different, really.

Supertramp was one of, if not, the first band to have a financial backer. A band that was put together by a millionaire that knew talent... Kinda like NSYNC. Love this band... So underrated.

Watching people reacting to Supertramp always puts a smile on my face. I've been a fan of theirs since the seventies. Fool's Overture and Crime of the Century are very good songs that I think you would like. Actually, just about anything by them.

By this time, supertramp had become very much more commercial. Previously,,they were most popular among the progressive rock crowd. I saw them on this tour, they were awesome. My favorite song is fools overture.

Man, I still have this CD from back in the day, although I never bought the album when it came out, but this was like a jump over "In The Quietest of Moments" album that I had on tape. The whole album is outstanding. Side note: Back in the day when Jon Anderson left YES, the lead singer of Supertramp was approached, and he said no. (Like the story of AC/DC approaching the singer of Krokus after Bon Scott died, and he said no)

My fave Supertramp song for the outro alone! Definitely cruise with the windows down to this one! 💗 Brad, I think there are 2 Supertramp songs you might like: 1) Take the Long Way Home (a MUST for both of you) - it really has a dual meaning, and it has harmonica that I think Lex would love! 2) The Logical Song - it has lyrics to create introspection and has depth, and I know Brad's all about breaking down those lyrics! 😁

This song just sounds like a happy, upbeat rock and roll song to me, nothing out of the ordinary as far as classic rock goes. Although it had its uniqueness as well. Its own flavor. Interesting to see how different people view things from different perspectives according to their past experience and environment.

the amazing theme is no guitars or heavy synth (it's there but not dominant), the pianos , the keyboard work is what pulls the song together. i still remember them as the only rock 'POP' group to use 2 grand pianos but now you understand why they're so good

I really enjoyed that. I've never liked the vocals of Supertramp, especially the heavy reliance on falsetto, and never paid any attention to the lyrics, so having this be a lyrics video opened new vistas for me. Another night, another groupie, another joyous roll in the hay, and early morning exit for the next city on the tour. Most guys don't have the luxury of having their travel arrangements all planned in advance before they bed a girl. You wake up, and you're in the same town with her, she's expecting a phone call, you might bump into her anywhere while out and about, she might find out where you live, key your car, or otherwise make your life miserable. But he knows when the tour bus leaves the hotel, or when the plane takes off, and he's outta there at the crack of dawn. No commitments, no regrets. It's a brand new day! Overall, a very interesting philosphy to have for a rock star, one that celebrates his way of life. That instrumental outro is so great, just a guy high on life, or high on something, booking out of town with no baggage that breathes.

Two very unique singing voices, that's for sure. As a kid I thought (Hodgson) was a chick . The Logical Song comes to mind lol. To me, they are what makes that band tick though.

@@funkster007 There are more wondeful musicians and singers than there are people who can write a great song. Supertramp wrote great songs, and that is more important than the singing or the "lead electric piano".
@funkster007
@funkster007 2 жыл бұрын
@@Yesquire0 Well of course, they are excellent musicians and songwriters. I never stated otherwise. But the vocals do stand out for me in this particular musical outfit. Btw, you do realize "lyrics" are very often an important ingredient to what makes a well written song right? ;)
@Yesquire0
@Yesquire0 2 жыл бұрын
@@funkster007 My initial point, somewhat obliquely set forth, was that mediocre singing of the lyrics tends to discourage any investigation into the content of the lyrics, while excellent singing tends to make you want to look them up. Rarely are lyrics discernible upon simply listening to the song, although, once you've looked them up, they are sort of magically made forever clear.

Goodbye Stranger's such a sweet, tuneful song for most of it, and slowly morphs into sort of an Indian raga psychedelic rockin' jam, at the end eh? Supertramp are a deep well. "Bloody Well Right" "Dreamer" "Give a Little Bit" "Breakfast In America" "Oh Darling" "Child of Vision" "It's Raining Again" "The Logical Song" "Take the Long Way Home"

Hey guys! These guys were my sisters favorite band when they were releasing these songs. Very interesting band from England. They had two lead singers. You hear the second guy occasionally in the background. Eventually they broke up and did solo albums. They both did OK but they faded away after that. At least in the US.

I heard this song a million times but for some reason never analyzed the lyrics until now. My impression is it about a life of one night stands and having no remorse (a common 70s rock theme) but doing research I discovered tons of debate between one night stands vs. marijuana factions. My impression is Mary and Jane are used as generic names for women, not a reference to weed.
@tomleslie6668
@tomleslie6668 2 жыл бұрын
I agree. I've tried to make the lyrics fit the quitting weed narrative, but it always seems a huge stretch. To the contrary, the tone, lyrics, and general feel make it seem more like somebody enjoying the party lifestyle of the time that you mentioned being a common theme. It just makes me feel reminiscent.
