This Martin acoustic guitar is in desperate need of some repair. It's been covered in duct tape, has a cracked side, loose binding, bad electronics, and to top things off, it's go the beginnings of a Willie Nelson style "TRIGGER HOLE" in the top. Also the sound hole has broken away in places. In this video, we'll fix the crack and stabilize the soundboard by filling the Trigger Hole and repairing the broken sound hole. We'll also overspray lacquer to help seal in all the repairs.

At 1st I wasn't sure I agreed with the method used on the fill-job; however, and in-spite of the customer's disposition toward its appearance, outside of tediously and cost-prohibitively hand-carving an exacting, intricate and delicate shape of Sitka to mind the voids... if his tendency is to merely recreate the damage with his heavy and flailing picking-hand, then yours is the ONLY way to go about it in an efficient and effective way. Smartly considered and executed, Brad!

Exactly. If I sat there for 8 hours perfecting the fit and finish of a piece of solid wood to plug the holes, it would just be destroyed again. The whole point is to give him a sacrificial layer of material to defend against the relentless pick attack. Some people think every repair on KZfaq is supposed to look like Dan Erlywine did it. That’s just not always a smart, practical, or economical approach for the working musician who just needs a reliable tool with which to ply his craft.

I also liked how he said he didn't care how his cars looked either as long as they get him from place to place. I feel the same way about my guitars and my cars. A car is simply a mode of transportation and as long as it functions properly and gets you from place to place, that is all you need. With that philosophy in life all my guitars and cars are paid for in full.

Great job..sounds great! The only thing that threw me was using shavings and wood glue to fill that hole....my go-to would usually be sanding dust and super glue but that would have been harder to level and the finish lacquer may not have matched as well...would probably have had too much 'sheen'. So good on you!! Good to know that guitar will continue in service for years to come. Cheers!!

See my previous comment. I posted it very early in the video. Come to find out, I'm not the only one to mention how this must be the most severely worn frets on an acoustic I ever recall seeing. But I really wanna say here: the fact that you went ahead and re-fretted the uppermost frets that were not worn, goes to show the extra lengths you take to achieve a job well done. I'm impressed !!! A lot of luthiers wouldn't bother replacing those. Way to go!!!

As always I enjoyed your video and attention to detail. The bottom line is the customer liked the work, but I will offer one remark. I respect the 'function over form' outlook, but there's a fine line where that crosses into poor general upkeep and deterioration of the guitar, car, etc. My two cents.
@TheGuitologist
@TheGuitologist Жыл бұрын
A routine clean and polish of the top would have helped keep the wood from chipping too, because sometimes, depending on the chemistry of the particular person's sweat, the lacquer can tend to coagulate and rub off the guitar when not routinely cleaned. After the lacquer is gone, the wood then starts to chip. People don't realize lacquer is almost like a liquid or slow moving gelatin, more than it is like a solid. When you polish an instrument with nitro lacquer or shellac, the old lacquer sort of melts in the neighboring molecules and reforms the barrier.
