Hi Brad! I'm a chemist and co-owner of Underground Cosmetics (we sell hair color and make it here in Los Angeles). Concerning the use of sharpies as a semi permanent hair dye, it's not going to make your hair fall out. However, there are ingredients in the sharpie ink that are not healthy or rather harsh for the hair or scalp such as diacetone alcohol and butyl alcohol, both of which are meant for biting into the surface to allow the dye to penetrate and stick. These ingredients aren't meant for soft proteins like our skin or hair, but for a variety of hard surfaces such as plastic, metal, paper, wood, etc. Even coupled with hair conditioner, the alcohol in sharpie ink is harsher than the ingredients you would find in professionally manufactured semi permanent dyes.

When I was in highschool, I used sharpie/ permanent marker on my hair. Except I did it during class, basically drew onto my hair. And just left it for a few hours. And it would last for a good 2 weeks before it started to fade. But it doesn't last that long. :) And it does make your hair dry, just don't shampoo it out. Deep condition.
