Not just the best ever performance of Brahms piano concerto no 1 , but also the sound quality of the recording is the closest to a real live concert, nobody can rich today this kind of magnificent sound of this recording

Mes deux compositeurs préférés du romantisme allemand sont Brahms...et Bruckner. Comme pour Bruckner, je possède de très nombreuses versions de chacune des oeuvres de Brahms. J'ai toujours porté aux nues le 1er concerto pour piano de Brahms. Là, je découvre, presque par hasard LA version de référence absolue. Et cela a été enregistré il y a plus de 60 ans et enfonce la concurrence, même Gillels. Fleisher est monstrueux et Szell d'une précision diabolique pour ce concerto où se répondent soliste et orchestre. Génial !!

Immer noch eine hervorragende Aufnahme, auch nach über 60 Jahren. In ihrer Intensität ergänzen sich Szell und Fleisher auf einzigartige Weise. Brahms at his best.

Listening to this performance I cannot but notice how "shallow" it is in terms of real musical depth and intensity. This performance is just about fast and accurate finger work and beauty of sound (at leat that I can say to its credit). But it does not even come close to the depth and intensity of the real great Brahms no 1 recordings, like Gilels, Backhaus, Serkin, Arrau and Anda- all them, in my view, a class well above this performance by Fleisher.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR BELATED REMARKS I would suggest that you do a little more research into the capabilities of Yuja Wang, and how many of our tto-day recognised brilliant conductors want her services in their concerts. the term "Miss Flying Fingers" is only a term given to her extra expertise, and NOT the be all and end all of her super talent. just take it easy, and don`t be so hot headed !

Not at all. The ones you mentioned are admirable but this Fleisher/Szell interpretation comes closer to the young Brahms than the others. Sorry. Gilels and Arrau are ponderous in comparison. T here are many approaches to the Brahms Concerto and one should be open minded but Szell brings the inner fabric of the work better than most conductors. Notice the french horns at the beginning of the Maestoso movement. Utterly superb. I am afraid you like your Brahms morose. Serkin however is an exception he was a great Brahmsian. If you want to hear young Brahms this is the one to start with. However, my very favorite recording has always been the Curzon/Szell. Desert island recording as well. Rubinstein and Cliburn also played this work supremely well.

This is a very good rendition, no doubt. But I find the sound a bit dry, the painist plays wonderfully but somehow lacks insight, and sometimes the sound is too mechanical. Brahms 1 is may all-time favourite piano concerto, and I still rank above any other the Clifford Curzon and George Szell recording with the LSO. There are may other magnificient recodinrgs, of course: Gilels & Jochum, Arrau&Haitink, Kovacevich&Davis, etc, etc. This work has been wonderfully recorded so many times that anyone can find his/her favourite rendition based on personal taste.

@@chrislong6999 I don't understand the need for this here. We are enjoying a brilliant recording by Fleisher, a respected mentor of Yuja Wang. There is no need to downplay the brilliance of this man by mentioning another fellow pianist.
