I came here thanks to “It’s all about music” by Murakami, such a lovely way of mixing literature and music.

I just started to hear it again after 58 years, and had to stop shortly after Gould started his solo....

This is my favorite performance of this concerto. I think the tempos are right on. I also love Horowitz/Toscanini 1932 doing this. They do it twice as fast as this and it's very exciting. But Glenn Gould is still my favorite performance of this. It has great depth and spirit and all of the melodies are sung to the max.

My favorite is Emil Gilel’s interpretation of this concert, but reading Murakami’s “absolutely on music” and listening the subject of the book’s first pages is like living it. Surreal. And, I still love this performance.

I checked out the Gilel's performance. One of the best! Thanks.

It’s a great conversation between Murakami & Ozawa - great gossip! Love Barenboim’s version with Celibidache conducting - it falls somewhere between Gould & Gilels, nearer Gould I’d say.

Scoprire questo concerto - e non solo- leggendo un autore giapponese: Murakami Haruki. Che piacere.

Thanks so much for this historic upload. I personally understand why Bernstein felt the need to disassociate himself from the approach they took, because I too found it way too drawn out, causing it to lose so much of its energy, excitement and drive. The only thing that puzzles me is that Lenny implied that this was Gould's preference, and the reason for their disagreement, whereas Gould seemed to suggest that he was actually the one who sought less extreme contrasts in tempi than Lenny. I'd appreciate an explanation of this seeming discrepancy.

I personally feel that Bernstein's opening remarks are entirely in good taste and simple fun. The audience's derision of Gould's interpretation, and more so, Berstein's commentary of it, are completely inappropriate in the intentionally evolving world of music.

The trill at the close of the 2nd movement lose their magic at this tempo. But other than that, I love the tempo! Its a movement I like to savor, but THE COUGHING! Shit.

As a concert pianist who loves this concerto and played it , I agree 100% w/Lenny's speech and remarks!. Also, some of my colleagues in the orchestra told me at that time that they suffer needing to play it under the tempo. It really does not sound like Brahms but maybe Bach or Beethoven.....Boring!!!!

I agree its pretty dull, but really doesn't seem that strange an interpretation. Some moments are especially good. The end of the first movement. I guess Bernstein wanted to make a preemptive strike for the sake of the reviews. And it did make the performance more famous that it ever would have been.

I grew up with baroque and renaissance music. So the interpretation by Glenn Gould is for me the key to understand Brahms.

Beg to disagree. Anyone who has listened to or seen videos of Bernstein's rehearsals knows how stubborn and adamant he was regarding his approach to a piece, even with world-famous soloists or singers. That he capitulated and submitted to Gould's extreme preference is a sign of his true respect for him. But as an all-time giant, he had a perfect right to publicize the fact that this was Gould's interpretation and not his, as most listeners would otherwise assume. It also honored, rather than disrespected Gould.
I wish I could change THIS fast! 🤣
