I. Maestoso INTRODUCTION 00:03: Theme 0 00:06 Motif a 00:19 Motif b 01:02 Theme A in D minor 01:23 Theme A in A minor 01:46 Theme B in B-Flat minor 02:02 Theme B in B-Flat minor 02:30 Modulating transition going back to D minor 02:40 Motif a 03:01 First appearance of the rhythmic pattern Theme 1 (it will appear on its main form at 03:35) 03:14 Closing section of the orchestral introduction EXPOSITION 03:35 Entrance of the piano with Theme 1 in D minor 04:22 Motif b in dialogue between the piano and the orchestra 04:40 Motif a modified and modulating to A minor 04:52 Theme A in an ambiguous tonality between D minor and A minor (the melody is in A minor, but the harmony does not locate us in it with the pedal Ds of the piano) 05:09 Theme A in E minor 05:33 Theme B in F minor 05:54 Modulating section using material from Theme B 06:13 Theme 2 in F Major (note the motif at 06:46, which we will call Motif c) 07:14 Little relaxed section in D-Flat Major (note the first rising 4th motif, which we will call Motif d) 07:33 Back to F Major, winds introduce the beginning of Theme B 07:39 Theme B in F Major played by the strings 07:55 Modulating section, first to E-flat Major (07:57), then to A Major (08:02), D Major (08:05), G Major (08:08), and finally to F Major again (08:22) 08:02 Rhythmic pattern of Theme 1, still modulating, going to F Major 08:22 Motif c in F Major, a little bit developed 08:43 Modulation to D-Flat Major with fragments of the Theme B 08:55 Modulation back to F Major 09:07 Motif c introduced by the winds 09:31 Beautiful variation of the Theme B in between B-Flat Major and F Major 10:02 Closing section 10:09 The piano prepares us for the development with Motif d and a passage of crescendo octaves DEVELOPMENT 10:19 Motif a by the orchestra with a response of the piano that keeps developing the previous octaves (same pattern of call and response repeated in the dominant at 10:31) 10:45 Resolution by a circle of fifths of the disagreement between soloist and orchestra 10:59 Motif b stated by the piano 11:06 A minor as the new tonic (V of D minor) 11:14 Theme A in A minor presented by the cellos 11:23 Response of the piano with the same Theme in C-Sharp minor that leads to a dialogue of the Theme A between the cellos and the piano 11:47 Starts the modulation to B minor 11:55 Wild version of Theme B in B minor 12:14 Major variation of Theme B in B Major (modulating to C Major at 12:22) 12:34 First motif of Theme B that leads to D minor again 12:52 Coda of the developement RECAPITULATION 13:01 Theme 0 in D minor again, this time presented furiously by the piano 13:55 Interesting blend of Motifs a and b 14:08 Statement of Theme 1 by the orchestra in D minor 14:17 Interruption by the piano that modulates from D minor to E minor 14:24 Statement of Theme 1 by the orchestra in E minor 14:34 Another modulating transition of the piano leading to what seems to be F-Sharp minor 14:41 The F-Sharp minor chord resolves to E Major (which means that it was the II of E Major and not the I of F-Sharp minor) in a beautiful II-V-I progression while the piano states Theme 1 in the aforesaid tonality. The theme will however modulate (resolving at C-Sharp Major (?) at 14:55) 14:58 Modulating transition of the piano that leads to F# minor 15:11 Theme B in F-Sharp minor, stated in a profundly lyrical version by the piano 15:27 Response of the orchestra with the beginning of Theme B (still in F-Sharp minor) 15:32 Surprising modulation to D Major (IV-V-I of D Major) 15:51 Theme 2 in D Major 16:47 Modulation to B-Flat Major 16:54 Little relaxed section in B-Flat Major (the same that pursued Theme 2 in the exposition) 17:12 Modulation to D Major 17:19 Theme 2 in D Major, this time presented by both orchestra and piano 18:01 Same transition section of the exposition that develops Motif c, this time in D Major 18:22 Little modulation to B-Flat Major 18:36 Back to D Major 18:46 Motif C stated by the horns with a closing character 19:01 The piano starts modulating to get back to D minor 19:23 Last vigorous statement by the piano of the Theme B, in D minor 19:38 Modification of Theme B, that gets interrupted by the orchestra with the Motif a 19:48 What seems to be the final cadence by the orchestra 19:59 Coda in an active dialogue between piano and orchestra :)

@@loganpeters811 Oh, don't get me wrong. I love Beethoven's first. It's indeed, like you say, great fun. But Brahms' piano concerto is literally one of the all time greats. In my eyes, only Beethoven's rightfully famous 5th concerto comes even remotely close to touching Brahms, and even in that regard I think Brahms 1st is far superior. I would easily count Brahms First Concerto amongst one of the five greatest piano concertos ever written, perhaps Beethoven's Fifth would make that same top 5, but the rest of his piano concerti sure wont.

@@FreakieFan Ah ok, I love Beethoven Pc1 so I was a bit confused as to why you would say it doesn't come close but I think I agree now that you say that. It's one of my favorites of the Beethoven Piano Concertos but mainly because its the only one I'm going to being able to learn for a while. XD

This concerto is Legacy of Mankind and absolutely wonderful. Many people place the n2 as a greater concerto, wich I think is a careless listening to n1 Both are great. I once was a fan of n2 (and I still am a fan of n2) but since I've come to grips with n1...I forget n2 and favored n1!!! N1 is so rich, beautiful, there is so much great music in it, it is Brahms at its best, a real summit for Brahms music. As for this interpreation and recording: Great rendition by the late Nelson Freire, with Chailly and the Gewandhaus superb! Many thanks for this wonderful upload!

I feel sorry for people who cannot appreciate the depth, scope and sheer beauty of this. Brahms is Beethoven plus, so generous in its breadth and warm in its orchestration. More compact in time yet so much more meaningful than Wagner. I first fell in love with it when I was 7 and its not lost any of its wonder. I shall die listening to this.

I was reading from the german wiki about this Concerto, that the critics for the first performance basically said, that it was uninteresting and not technical enough... -.- wtf! I now understand, why I dislike classical music after the romantic phase. Musicians were pushed for senseless complexity back in this time - and by no means is brahms easy to play :-D
@zgart
@zgart 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t say senseless complexity, but rather finding new ways to express oneself through music, the people that believe in complexity for complexity ‘s sake (very few great composers like this exist, and if they do they usually grow in thought, eg boulez) are very naive

Still wondering why Rachmaninoff called this piece an ugly music . I love Rachmaninoff incomparably more than Brahms or even Liszt , but this is not an ugly piece. It’s beautiful. More beautiful than Rachmaninoff’s fourth concerto .

@@GICM The world of arts is somewhat subjective, although there are certain parameters. Take Liszt for example. Do you really really love all of his music? Cause I don’t . Take Rachmaninoff ‘s Etudes tableaux … not all are actually good. Some of them sounds confusing with an uncertain logical or even emotional line. What about the other immortals? In a Dinner table with conceited connoisseurs One might hesitate and say indeed all of these composers’ creations are magnificent . But they are not . Not for everybody . I prefer for many Many reasons Rach 3 than Rach 2 ( no, it is not because I watched shine when I was a kid) . Others would feel different .

This concerto has many great moments but I still think the 2nd is arguably better. Grieg #1, Tchaikovsky #1 & 2, Rach #2, and Shosty #2 are still my all-time faves tho ♥️

@Georges Prat Perfect description. I feel that the first reaches deeper, but the second is a better *piano* concerto in terms of virtuoso writing and exploring the effects of the piano. The writing in the first concerto serves its purpose, but often cold and stark compared to the more colorful nature of the second.
