This infection is very rare. In the U.S., there are only an average of 3 cases per year, BUT there is a greater than 95% fatality.
There are treatments available (antibiotic/ antifungal/ antimicrobial/ steroid) BUT, of 154 people who had this infection over the past several decades about 4 survived.
Infection usually occurs from inhaling the contaminated warm fresh water through the nose. It enters the cribriform plate then invades the brain causing brain swelling. In rare cases, patients have been infected after doing nasal/ sinus cleansing with #nettypots using contaminated tap water.
Sources of Naegleria Fowleri (brain-eating amoeba)
-warm freshwater (lakes, ponds, rivers)
-hot springs
-IMPROPERLY chlorinated pools
-warm pipe water
-warm water discharge from industrial power plants
-untreated drinking/ tap water
-Symptoms usually occur within 9 days after exposure, and loss of life occurs within 2 weeks of symptoms
PREVENTION
-avoid disturbing the sediment at the bottom of warm fresh water
-don’t dive or immerse your head in warm fresh water
-wear nose plugs to avoid inhaling the water
-if you develop symptoms after possible exposure, seek medical attention immediately
