Hi, I faced the same issue 2 days back when i was on a ride to chikmaglur in my apache 160 4v. I was on a steep downhill with pillion partner riding from chikmaglur to kemmangundi, the road is full of red dust, potholes and gravels, I was pressing the rear brake pedal too hard to have control over the vehicle. And suddenly I sensed that the rear brake is not responding at all. However the front disc was working fine. I came down hill, stopped the vehicle and touched the disc. It was super heated. I waited for a while to cool off the bike and then i realized the brake was back in action. I continued the rest of the ride without any issue. I had faced a similar issue when I was riding downhill in BR hills in october 2020. I stopped for a while allowed the vehicle to cool off and then the brake started working again. I consulted some experienced riders and came to know that this is a common issue when rear brake is overused because of which the pressure fades away.This is known as brake fading. We need to use front brake more than the rear brake along with engine braking and gear downshifts more to avoid such issues. Happy riding!

I am suffering from the same problem. I have changed master cylinder twice and now the thing… diskpads got too hot to stick up with disk and jammed the rear tyre… after cooling it down it gets normal….. but the issue is an issue…..either with royal enfield or with any other bike..

I faced the same issue. But it happened for me during normal traffic. Brake completely faded away. Zero pressure on the pedal. Thought it was the fluid but seems the culprit is overheating of the rear disc.

You should be using mostly the front brake and the engine for regulating your downhill speed. If you were only using the rear then it will get hot and fade. I hardly ever use the back brakes. 17,000 miles of hard use and I still have the original brake pads front and rear. The rear brake also locks up very easily and will put you into a skid. I don't think I have ever locked up the fronts on the pavement. Even in the dirt, the front brake works great and it takes a lot to lock them up.

That's because most of people have habit to keep feet on break leaver. If not required one should not keep their feet on leavers. I almost went downhill at Khardungla pass.

This makes me wonder, should I really go for the Himalayan BS6 or the Dominar 400. What's your suggestion?
@rajvreddy

Hello Rakshith... Himalayan is a beautiful motorcycle in all terms, the only flaw is tube tyres considering the off roading purpose, it is fine tooo.... But this brake issue is due to usage of too much brakes downhill causing the brake fluid to loose it's viscosity... If u would have seen the video till the end .... I have explained that 👍

Did you find the solution? This happened with me around 4-5 times in last 1 year, and that only in traffic. Brake hits bottom and after 10-15 mins, automatically comes up. Any solution?

Even I am facing the same damn problem with mh himalayan, changed 3 rear brake cylinders but no use. Bloody non reliable vehicle brother . Don't buy the himalayan if you value your life. I am.not new to re, I own old model re as well, no issues with that.

The solution is basic - use engine braking most of the time … on a downhill

I had this issue twice and realised the issue occurred due to excessive use of rear break in the downhill..last time i just gave it some time to cool and put some water to cool the shoes heat down and then it worked again ...

If it has happened for the 2nd time then It's not the bike's problem. Learn to do engine braking and don't keep hanging on to your brakes while riding downhill. And this happens with any bike if you ride it like this.

There is no blockage and nothing wrong with the rear caliper or the brake line. The guys at the service center will not be able to do anything. Stop riding the rear brake pedal while riding downhill and use both the front and the rear brakes in tandem, while trying to slow down or stop. Problem solved. Also when was the last time you replaced the brake fluid ??? Brake fluid has a sort of running hour life, explained in layman's terms. Since the technicalities will confuse you, as you are not familiar with motorcycles or their parts, as you do not know the difference between a master cylinder 3:48 and a brake drum.

Thanks a lot for the info... Yes to avoid using rear brakes much on downhill & to use engine breaking... For the Brake drum, I was worried how to manage the return journey back home as it was 300+ kms 👍... So words rumbled
