BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER; HOW IT WORKS... (GIRLING 70 / FULL CROSS SECTION)

In this video I re-machine the bore of a Girling 70 master cylinder. After finishing the bore I mill the unit in half to reveal a cross section exposing the internal geometry. At the end of the video I re-install the internal components and briefly explain how it functions.
This is the old master cylinder from project big MF'er; Massey Ferguson MF30E. Originally I was going to bore the master cylinder out and install a larger piston and seal kit. In researching for rebuild kits I found aftermarket master cylinders were available. I opted to purchase new aftermarket replacement units for the tractor. These old master cylinders were bound for the scrap pile and I thought it would be a good education tool.
I hope you enjoyed learning more about the internal geometry and components of a brake master cylinder. **Hobby Machinist**

No one has made the working of center valve master cylinder on KZfaq. Thank you very much for making this video

Welcome! Sometimes it's fun to see and learn how things work using real parts. Thanks for watching and sharing! 👍😁

I worked for Girling, still involved with vehicle brakes, off highway brakes too, travelled around the world to various companies in various countries sorting out brake production problems, I actually have the drawing for that cylinder!

That's pretty cool! I believe the Girling units are made well and definitely better than the copy cat unit I used as a replacement. Thanks for watching and sharing! 👍😁

Thank you, I’ve always known in theory how they work but never seen the mechanics of it. Plenty of incorrect animations online. This was great!

You are welcome! I knew the theory, but never seen a full cross section. It was a learning experience for me too. Thanks for watching! Cheers 👍😁

Good vid, very interesting to “see inside” as I am about to refurbish an old Girling cylinder from an old site dumper.

That was a great video ! While doing the cutout, you were climb milling quite often, check out this video on "Climb milling Vs Conventional milling" , you will get better tool life and avoid possible unpleasant surprises. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ncecoJiQm7m5k4E.html

I was aware of the different styles of cutting. However, I don't operate the milling machine enough to know each cut immediately. I have to stop and think about the direction and cutter rotation before moving forward. Thank you for sharing the reference video! Great information. As I machine more I will make solid effort to refrain from climb milling except on light finish cuts. This was a sketchy setup with light clamping. I'm surprised it turned out as nice as it did. Thanks for watching 👍😁

Sir you know the cause of leaking fluid?bike is 600 miles🤦🏽‍♂️
@FlatThunder

If it's leaking fluid out of the master cylinder it's likely damaged seals. If the motorcycle (etc) is relatively new I would be more inclined to look for a loose fitting or hose. Also keep in mind it could be losing fluid at the wheel cylinder or caliper. The piston seals can leak in those components too. Good luck on the repair. Thanks for watching! 👍😁
