Too often we see new brakes ruined by an incorrect bedding procedure. Drivers either brake too hard leading to pad smear, or not enough resulting in a lack of transfer layer and poor performance. Bedding brakes correctly is not hard if you follow the tips we discuss in this video.
This video is a follow up to the BMW M2 brake install video.

This is why if the company has the option, you pick Pre-bedded pads (Carbotech, GLOC brake pads has this option). From what I understand, if you use brand new rotors, there will initially be a few laps where your car will just naturally transfer materials to the new rotor. Then mid day when You and your car are all warmed up, the rotors are also bedded. The tricky part is getting your Track pads bedded as they are normally only going to bed at high temperatures. Therefore, Go for the Pre-bed option and don't gamble on screwing up (even though technically it isn't a hard process). - New Rotors bed naturally with use. If you are in actual racing and not for hobby, have the rotors pre-bedded for maximum reliability and consistency. - If you use Old rotors, it is recommended to clean them up with a sander and 80-50 grit sandpaper with brake clean. Then use your brake bad of choice to prevent material contamination mix. - Brake pads (track pads) need high temperature to start bedding process of the brake pad itself. The resins in it need to be burned off.

Are you running pagid RSLs? Pagid mentions not bedding pads on brand new rotors. I have new rotors and Pagid RST1s. I was going to break in the rotors with the stock pads on my car, then come back and throw the Pagids on. Then bed those in properly. The instructions on rotors break are much lower speed and temps. Do you think it's a good idea? The rotors are slotted from R1 concepts, got them for pretty cheap as a disposable track rotor

No you can't bed in your street pads and then mount race pads. 1st the compounds are dissimilar so u lose effectiveness of track pads. Plus u don't get the surface oils of race pads burnished off or the pads fully mated to the rotor. I either run matching race rotors to race pads or lightly sand my street rotors to clean off street pad compound to allow proper bedding of race pads so rotor has smooth layer of race pad material only. Several good 60 to zero stops with cooling in-between sufficient. Then let sit until cool before using.

I'm curious how bedding works on hybrids, a normal press of the brake pedal does not engage the brake pads until the speed drops below a few miles per hour.

not sure on other hybrids, but on the Prius 2nd and 3rd gen…accelerate and then put it in neutral and press the brake, being in neutral disables the regenerative braking and makes use of the brake pads and rotors

So with ceramic brake pads and a high carbon rotor, with bedding in, is it possible to melt the ceramic pads? I want to get the best performance I can out of this setup but do not want to ruin brand new brakes like the guy before me did. The old rotors were horrible I ask this because I don't have many streets near me with no other cars so I would be forced to stop at some point during the cooldown period

@LoveLikeaHurricane
@LoveLikeaHurricane 28 күн бұрын
@@yung-megafone for street pads you don't have to bed them necessarily as they would bed naturally over time with street driving. But if you want to, you can do 45 mph stops down to 10 mph 5-8 times until you start to feel brake fade. Never come to a complete stop with your foot on the brake pedal or handbrake applied. After you start feeling brake performance has gone down (brake fade), keep driving around 2-3 minutes to allow the air to cool the brakes. Then park your car for about 30 minutes to 1 hour. Again, do not apply brakes at a stop during this process.

@LoveLikeaHurricane
@LoveLikeaHurricane 28 күн бұрын
if you use street pads, no need for bedding process, as usually street pads bed themselves over time. The important thing is make sure your rotor that already has had brake material on it won't cause issues with the new brake pad materials you are using (if you are using a different company/brand of brake pads).

thanks for the tips. Suggestion for you; it's always best to tell what TO do rather than what not to do; our mind remembers the action and doesn't always associate it with good or bad.

@@knsbrakes608 Hi, just want to ask you a question. I brought new ceramic performance front pads and I installed on rotors(~25000mile since new) after 2 days of driving the rotors change the colour from silver to gold/bronze colour, car stop’s very good, im just wondering if the colour of the rotors change because of the ceramic pads or because of the heat, what do you recommend? Thanks in advance

@@ionica55amg Generally performance and ceramic do not go in the same sentence. Ceramic are low dust. I'd guess you have the Powerstop pads that do that. I have never used those but seen the colr change before.

Actually OEM factory supplied brake pads are mostly a lower friction compound designed to work at lower temperature ranges and eith minimal NHV Factory pads don't require bedding in like higher friction/temp resistant track focused brake pad compounds.

@@leakyjeep5.9Most average brake pads are designed to have low friction and heat resistance while minimizing wear and NHV. Track focused brake pads sacrifice noise dust and low temp friction for high temperature performance and endurance.

Should you bed in brakes on a brand new car?
@knsbrakes608
@knsbrakes608 3 жыл бұрын
Street pads do not require aggressive bedding - it will happen on it's own with use. That said - if you are planning to pretty immediately use the brakes hard then some bedding is a good idea. Just remember - street pads can be overheated easily so no need to bed them in like a race pad.

I have a honda element and had the rotors and pads changes out 3 weeks ago. Noticed grinding and other noises and knew I was on my way to wearing these out prematurely. I had brake pads changed out say 3 months prior and I was metal to metal in 3 months. This has just started happening I took it back to mechanic he saw the brake pads were glazed in 3 weeks and my mechanic comes with the excuse, ... it's how you're braking. No sir. I've braked the same way rhat i have when yiu changed my brakes and ingit several years out of the brakes. and am driving way less now due to more work at home. Need to figure out what is going on.

The direction of rotation is determined by the internal vanes which I don't think you can see in the video. They are installed correctly and you can verify that on Girodiscs website girodisc.com/technical-info/

Those do not matter. What matters are the vanes in-between the rotor sides. Some rotors come with straight vanes and some are slanted(directional as are the ones in the video). Easier terminology would be the brake rotor vents.
