My pre-MOT inspection for this 2007 Ford Ranger revealed the front wheels were very hard to turn. The Ranger hadn't been used much recently. These 2 things together usually mean it is time for a front brake service.
In this video I take you through my approach to a Ford Ranger front brake service. The Ranger in this video is a 2007 (Mk 3) double cab 4x4 2.5 TDCi with only 62,000 miles.
With the vehicle jacked up at the front and supported with axle (jack) stands, I removed the wheels and turned the steering to enable better access to the brake caliper.
I removed the brake caliper and hung it up out of the way. At this stage it was clear that the outboard pad was moving freely in the pad carrier, but the inboard pad was stuck solid in the pad carrier.
In my experience this is the most common cause of brakes binding, but other causes are stuck slider pins (commonly due to damaged rubber boots allowing water and dirt in) or a seized brake caliper piston.
The next step was to remove the pad carrier and hammer out the stuck brake pad. The brake pads were fairly worn, but the wear was even so I decided they could be cleaned up and reused.
I removed the pad mounting hardware / springs, then cleaned the rust off and applied lubricant to the areas that needed it.
After this it was time to put everything back together. Remember to pump the brake pedal to re-seat the pads and caliper after doing work like this, otherwise you might be in for an unpleasant surprise (no brakes) the first time you drive the vehicle!
