Brakes Clunking After Brake Job | Brand New Brake Pads Clunk/Knocking Sound

This is a common issue when brake pads are manufactured with the incorrect tolerances. The pad has up/down movement in the bracket, causing and audible knock/click/clunk sound when switching from drive to reverse and braking. You may be able to create a solution with shims etc, but in this case I went ahead and replaced the pads and returned the old ones. I also went with a different manufacturer for the new pads.

YESSSSSSSSSSS !!! Just proves that you can type in the most arbitrary string of words together in KZfaq and you WILL find a video. haha I just replaced all 4 rotors and all pads and my front driver side was making this clunking noise but just in reverse. I'll take the caliper off again and I am sure I'll find the same movement in the pad. I'll check the pad wear level indicators to see if I've bent it to much that would allow that movement.

I haven't taken the tire off yet to take a look. One other thing is it could be the rotor. I didn't get OEM (I got Bosch) for my highlander. So it's possible the clunking is from the rotor bolt holes being too large. I'd think I'd hear it from all 4 tires (but then again, I am on the driver's side) I'll have my wife listen to the other side of the car to see if the sound comes from the other tires) I'll let you know
@GibbysGarage15
@GibbysGarage15 Жыл бұрын
@@TheK9Shepherd I doubt the rotor bolt holes are the issue, when you torque the lug nuts, it clamps the hell out of the rotor to the hub. So even those little gaps in the bolt holes won't matter so long as the rotor is sitting flat and flush on the hub lip.

Hi there, thanks for sharing this video. I recently had new front discs and pads and this knocking / clunking noise has been driving me insane. Only really noticeable when I’m braking and slowing down to a stop but it’s this exact noise. I thought maybe it could be braking hard on new brakes but I haven’t been doing this. If this is the issue, does it require new pads again or is there a work around so that it’s not a waste of new pads? Is this happening because the wrong pads have been put on by the garage? Thanks

Thanks for the video. You can also put a perfectly cut metal piece between the pad ears and the bracket, and fix it to the bracket with a drop of water resistant glue (e.g rtv silicone). Its not ideal but you don't waste a set of brake pads. Some cars (and pad sets) come with anti rattle shims that fix into the bracket instead of the pad, and many of these have a tiny piece of dark metal below (between the shim and the bracket) to "raise" the sim, i got the idea from these. After that, you can put a tiny amount of silicone grease on the pad's ears to prevent seize and improve movement.
@GibbysGarage15
@GibbysGarage15 Жыл бұрын
I'll try that next time! I did find it odd this assembly did not have any kind of anti rattle clip aside from the little ones on the pad (they do not stop up/down movement). Sometimes I wonder if it would be better not to clean the brackets when installing new pads.
@orlalara
@orlalara Жыл бұрын
@GibbysGarage15 You can have a better idea about the entire shims set that come for that specific car by looking at the catalog from some decent brands like akebono directly from their website. I have a 98 Camry and didn't know that the oem pads come with tiny holes at the top where some sort of springs go, to slightly release the pads from the rotor when you are not using the brakes. It's overwhelming how every tiny piece of the car has some sort of engineering that many aftermarket parts just omit , I am yet to find rear pads that come with these springs.

Thank you for the video. I just did the front and rear brakes on my 2017 Golf Sportwagen and it has the same knocking sound. The sound is coming from the front driver and passenger side and it is driving me nuts. I thought maybe I didn't bed them in properly but I'm glad I stumbled on this video because this looks and sounds just like it. I initially went with Bosch Questcast pads thinking it's a good brand but I guess I was wrong. I will have to look at TRW or Zimmerman.

@@GibbysGarage15I just bought another set of front pads and they do the exact same thing. I’m gutted really but I think it has nothing to do with the size of the pads (because I measured the after market pads with the OEM’s and they are the same), however I think it has something to do with the material on the back of the pads. My old OEM pads had a texturized backing which probably allowed the caliper to grip the back of the pads more securely. The aftermarket pads have a shiny metal surface that would allow movement, especially if you grease the inside of the caliper that touches the back of the pads. Anyway that’s my theory. I have been on these newer pads for almost a month and the sounds haven’t disappeared.
@GibbysGarage15

Thanks for the video. I never thought brake pads could cause such clanking noises. I have a weird problem, although it's similar, I'm not sure if it's the axle shaft or the brakes. Could you help? I know that my axle shafts are going bad as they created a clicking/clanking noise when I turned the wheel at slow speeds. But that's an old story. A couple of weeks ago, I had both my front and back rotors resurfaced and the brake pads changed. My brother took the car to a hill station on his vacation after that. Now, when I turn the wheel, I can hear the clicking noise, but in addition to that known problem, I can hear the clicking noise when I brake, start the car from idle, or go over a bump. What could be the reason? Did the axle shaft really go bad after his hill drive, which usually involves a lot of turns, or is it the new brake pads? Like you mentioned, it's so hard to find mechanics who are true to their heart and have the patience and knowledge to look into the issues. Thank you.
@GibbysGarage15
@GibbysGarage15 2 ай бұрын
Only way to approach this would be a process of elimination. I would take the wheel off and check for play in the brake pad like in the video. Sometimes when they clean things up really good, and use a new brake pad, it could create a gap between the pad and bracket. If that looks good, and there's no excessive play in the pad, I would go ahead and fix the axles since that needs to be done anyway. The usual approach, when trouble diagnosing, is to start where it's free/cheap first, and move up from there. I feel your pain, cars can be tricky to diagnose even for the seasoned technician. Good luck, I'd love to hear back!

I noticed that there were no pad tab/ear shims in the caliper bracket in the video. I'm having same issue WITH shims. New rotor and pads job. Maybe when cleaning the rust from the bracket where the pad ears go, it created a gap because of loss of metal. I would think over a little time, enough gunk would get back in there and close the gap.... Depending on how many times the brakes have been changed , and the groove filed and /or wire brushed clean, a new bracket may be in order. But sometimes in the manufacturing process, the pad casting is off. I've had to file down new pad ears before.
@GibbysGarage15
@GibbysGarage15 5 ай бұрын
On this car the "shims" are kind of built into the pad. But they only tighten the radial direction, not the up/down, so you're really at the mercy of the engineers and manufacturers sometimes.
