#TheOffice is one of the greatest shows of the 2000s! I’m reviewing every episode with some background, trivia, the deeper meaning, and more. Today, we're looking at the #Branch #Wars episode.
This episode flirts with awesome, but doesn't quite land on it. The #Utica inflitration is amazing, but it is another S4 example of upping the ante in a way that doesn't quite meet the tone of the rest of the series. The Finer Things Club is also another great inclusion, but I don't know what it really does for the series, or character development. This episode overall feels somewhat incomplete. That's why I think that this was originally intended to feel like it's one part of a two-parter with the next episode, Survivor Man.
Thanks to our NBC overlords for their creation and ownership of the Office. The clips used here are for reviewing and education.

I noticed Phyllis' accent, but just wrote it off as my imagination running wild. Then the Office Ladies confirmed it and now I can't stop hearing it. I giggle every time. Jim is my guy, I like Jim, but I like that other people see the things Jim does. No one seems to ever really say anything about his pranks or sense of humor and it's almost like it's completely transparent to everyone in the office (other than Pam), but when Oscar calls him out on it, its just a hint of comeuppance that puts a smile on my face. It's not explored, but it's clear that Karen hasn't done any self-reflection on her & Jim's relationship. It's basically just his fault in her eyes. He has some blame to bear, but she does as well.

8:25 I know this vídeo has years. But I'm proud I saw it. Ps: I think Toby does belong to the club. He's a writer, so he's a reader too. It's not much. But that seems to be rare enough in The Office for him to be there. Speaking honestly maybe only Oscar belongs to that club

Speaking of odd pronunciations and dialects among The Office actors: Angela uses a hard G when saying “ing” words. For instance, she’s says “goingGAH”, almost a K. I have no idea why it drives me nuts but it does every time.

I know I am a little lat for this, but I think that the opening should at be at most a 3/5. I know it isn't that memorable or anything special, but it does set the rest of the episode up. I mean the entire episode is based on this cold open.

I like how this episode further humanizes Jim. He's always been the most likeable person on the office staff, but through his clumsy attempt to join the Finer Things Club, we see how he isn't perfect. As far as Toby is concerned, I can see his awkwardness there, but he does seem like one of the few people in the Scranton branch who would actually take an interest in art and literature. But maybe he does have another motive to join the club: his crush on Pam. Toby doesn't get many opportunities to one-up Jim, but the Finer Things Club is one place where Toby actually has the advantage. But in typical Toby style, he doesn't really assert himself or take it anywhere.

The whole raiding the Utica* branch thing is way over the top unbelievable, though it does offer a satisfying closure between Jim and Karen. I agree doing the action while showing Jim's POV was brilliant. And the Finer Things club shows a disappointing elitism in some of the characters that's off-putting. * When hearing Utica, all I can think of is the Simpsons based Steamed Clams meme. Lots of creative work done by people on KZfaq doing umpeenth variations on that skit, even a few being done nowadays.
@Mulverine

As for the finer things club, it’s one off though right? That’s always been an issue with this episode is that it’s here BOOM, then never seen again. Link me something on the Simpsons based Steamed Clams meme? I don’t know what your talking about.

I was trying to think of a response to goof on this and all I could think of was Michael talking about his twirl. Just replace “twirl” with “documentary”. I am not going to "do" the "twirl," alright? It's not even a twirl, it's a spin. [pause] I might do the spin.

You really seem to frequently force “themes” into episodes and punish episodes with negative reviews if you are having too much trouble finding a unifying theme. I mean - at times I am absolutely certain writers are attempting to fit a theme , but I believe that with The Office, an attempt to maintain the “realism” of a documentary would probably discourage writers from trying to make b-plots that fit the same theme as the A-plot.

Racist? Just because race is acknowledged doesn't automatically make it racist. The underlying theme of the entire Michael Scott character is the juxtaposition of his need for friends, family, love- and his complete ignorance. When he says things like that, it's ignorant but coming from a place of love.
