There has been a lot of discussion about camera youtube review ethics with regards to brand sponsored videos about cameras or any other type of camera gear such as gimbals. However, not many, if any youtubers at all have discussed the idea of brand bias when it comes to camera reviews and discussions. In this video, I discuss the issue with Brand loyalty in camera gear reviews ( and any other type of product review, really) and what consumers should do to figure out the difference between actual facts and biased opinions.

Whenever a reviewer is too excited about a new camera, I’m skeptical. When someone like you says a camera works well for wedding films, I believe it. Then I ask myself if it will work for cat vlogs.

You caught me with ‘anamorphic lens’ 😂. Stayed for the whole vid. I’m currently looking to upgrade my kit as the level of work I want pursue and produce are a level above my current kit. I’ll search for info about camera gear here on KZfaq and initially get sucked into the influencer vlogs. But after that wears off I meticulously search for people like you who give real use case scenarios based on what they actually use the gear for.

I’m a barber/barbershop owner 30 plus years and now a barber instructor/educator at the local high school. I started this photo/video content KZfaq creation thing due to Covid. It’s fun and challenging. The learning curve is huge but I’m enjoying it. I love your style of your videos. Real talk no bullsh!! I have zero brand loyalty, because brands have zero loyalty for their customers. It's just monetary relationship, nothing more. So it goes the same way for phones, computer, clothing, cars, cameras, etc for me. Of course it's harder to ditch camera system, than car brand for example - if you got 10 lenses for a camera system mount. Generally companies are usually on the strong side of the relationship with their customers, so they can dictate the conditions of it. Like they release artificially crippled camera and you have to either buy it, spend more on another model or wait for better model to be released. WIth cars they introduced subscription models (for heated seat, etc) which is ridiculous. This shows they are only here for money grab nothing else. So we as customers should have zero brand loyalty and choose what is the best for us.

Definitely another great video! It's like an Op Ed Vlog. I am a Sony fan too, but I pay attention for any brand with specs that matter to me and the content I create. I always thought I would get an a7S-iii, but didn't have the budget at the time... and then eventually the FX3 came out. That feels like ages ago now. And the brand wars kept tugging at me to jump ship. So, I waited until I had a budget to upgrade from a great 8-bit, FF, a99ii (this was previously an upgrade from a crop a65). I went mirrorless with the a7R-V this year. I am a hybrid shooter, and the resolution was important to me. Going from 42 MPs to 61 MPs in my stills feels great. I looked at the A1, but I couldn't justify that purchase with better video specs and lower stills res, especially since it seemed better to get new E-mount glass vs. using an adaptor for my discontinued A-mount glass. Creating video content with LOG is great, and yeah I sometimes use LUTs. The picture profiles in Sony's menu are nice too. But, it really depends on the mood that one is looking to create. So, I take opinions from KZfaqrs for what they are and compare it against what could work for me too. If nothing else, I am more informed one way or another.

I feel the same way as you about color science. I much prefer accurate colors out of the camera rather than having a stylized look baked in. I never understood why people on KZfaq complained about Sony's color science. When I switched from the Fuji X-T4 to the Sony A7IV, the color science was the first thing I liked about the Sony because the colors were more accurate. This makes it much easier for me to color grade in post because, like you said, it's basically like having a fresh white canvas to start with.

I did choose the S5II over the FX3: better IBIS, did not want to attach a monitor and S5II has Framemarkers, waveforms, shutter angle, and because many times I shoot both photo and video in the same event. I don’t need the extreme low-light nor 4k 120. The FX3 would be a dream IF I had doing dedicated higher production things, with all bells and whistles attached, but reality is that I’m not, and FACT is that the FX3 is twice the price of the S5II, so in my case it was an easy decision

Once you are invested in a system it is expensive to change out. Plus once you learn your camera you know how to get the best out of it. The only time a person really has to change there camera is when it doesn’t suit your needs. I bought my 1st MacBook in 2009 because I bought a HD camcorder and Windows computer weren’t doing HD video yet

Love my A7sIII. I get to work with R5's at my job. Own an S5iix since B&H sold it with 3 lenses + the body for less than 1 A7iv. If Sony's custom mode made it easier to capture custom white balance on the fly and could actually display HDMI info to the external monitor without making my 5" monitor into a 3" monitor, it would be much more fun to use. A7sIII, R5, S5iix all create the image I need, but I've personally found the Sony to be least "fun" to use. Maybe panasonic will realize one day that 4k60 uncropped is all people really want out of their full frame line. And an actual video centric body.

I use Portkeys LH7P monitor and you can touch the monitor to control Sony camera settings and see the settings. Sony FX3 is a lot more fun to use than the a7SIII as a video shooter

*I switched from Panasonic too Sony because of Panasonics poor auto focus. This was when I the G7 & G85 & they had poor auto focus so I did some lookin too see what had descent Auto Focus and Sony was that product and so I bought a HX-80 and from there the ZV-1 & The a6400 & then wanted more video then photo so when I saw the FX30 and watched a few videos I traded my ZV-1 & a6400 for the FX30 and I LOVE IT. Bought my First G Lens the 15mm and then a Sony ZV-E10 and Now I've got all I need and I did a review on my Camera's and nothing more. I watch your videos because you have info that helps me and if I have a question about something I'll ask ya*

Hey Vu, I agree with you. Been so annoying to hear so much bias and bs out there on color science. Color science involves both factual and subjectivity. Color science as a discipline is factual, with measurable principles using physics, biology, and mathematical models. However, the interpretations, preferences, and emotional impacts of color are highly subjective, blending both opinions and facts. Understanding both aspects and being clear on what is fact-based vs. opinions. The latter getting mostly misinterpreted and then calling it fact-based color science when it’s just opinions and/or mixed Personally and professionally, I use both Canon R5 and lots of Sony cameras. I will definitely never say one brand has better color science over the other. It’s more about what colors are pleasing/required for my personal and/or my business work.

Great vid. One thought, If you shoot corporate nowadays without open gate, thats not a good look. Clients need it more than 120fps. Usually need photos as well. That's where the S5iix comes in handy.

Shooting 'seshual' transition content for TikTok while injecting puberty blockers is wild 😂 Talk about nicheing down. Another huge reason I sprung for the FX3 2 years ago was the 4 channel audio. I make a lot of music content and having a separate stereo track for music baked into the video file was a game changer. It completely eliminated the need for external recorders for me. Aside from fairly low megapixel photos, its pretty much the camera we all dreamed about when the hybrid shooter/DSLR revolution started. Honestly if it shot 24mp like the FX30 I probably wouldnt upgrade for another 4-6 years.

I bought S5IIX being knee deep into e-mount. And you were right. It was a mistake to a degree. I have to sold it, cause photo and video is just my hobby and it was not possible to live in 2 mount systems. I would be much better buying FX6 for e-mount, cause whole S5IIX adventure (with 2 lenses and shit) was worth the same as FX6. Although using another system is good and valuable experience ... although quite expensive 😅

I’m always skeptical about any type of review on KZfaq. Now days I think you’re right the color science is not even an issue anymore. I recently got into shooting video so I haven’t been shooting long enough to where the Sony color science was inferior to canon. But I think that was like 15 years ago. I recently switched to Sony from canon and I actually prefer the color science on the zve1 than the canon r6 mark ii. I also like the fact the Sony gives you the best log profile they have unlike canon. If you want c log 2 you have to pay for the cinema series which is more expensive. Anyway happy I made the switch to Sony.

I really agree with you about KZfaqrs Most believe you need a full frame camera to shoot video but most Hollywood block busters are shot on super 35. The Sony FX3 is double the price of the S5iix. So if the same price is I would buy the FX3 because it is a great price.

I was always Canon since the mid 90s, starting with two EOS5 35mm for weddings. I also had 2x 30D, 2x 5D2, 1x 5D3, 2x M50 and selections of L-series lenses. I dumped Canon after getting two R6mk1 that both died first use of Error 70. Canon were shovelling rubbish into the cameras following the Chinese microchip factory fire. I went Sony with 2x A7IV and 3x A7C, Sigma MC-11 Cano-Sony lens adapter and a whole new set of Sony and Sigma ART lenses. Sony are WAY BETTER in all respects for photo and video. Bye bye Canon. Note: I was never a brand douchebag. I went with Canon back in the day because the UK industry standard for wedding photography was "a pair of EOS-5" and then having bought lenses and flasguns for Canon I stuck with it.

People generally think money. Cheaper is better. Can't see value in nuanced or even obvious enhancements from the more expensive product vs cheaper. Videographers are funny.. they can't see nuanced value in gear but expect clients to see nuanced skill in their work then cry when client goes for the cheaper Videographer

If I could get FX3 or A7S3 and GM 35, 50, 85mm for under 5k it'd be clear winner. But I got S5iiX, 35, 50 and 85mm f/1.8 for just over 2500 with tax... value is more important for most starting out. Fx3 is a very specified tool

GM 35, 50, and 85 are a lot better lenses than the Lumix lenses. You can easily get third party f/1.8 primes for FX3 and be under $5,000. FX3 is not a "specific tool". It is a tool that you can use for any type of video production without compromises. You can film family stuff all the way to Hollywood films with the camera. That is pretty broad.

I think if someone would go for s5II is simply that it is less money. The initial price is $500 less than a7iv and then it is always $200 off after half year of releasing. Sometimes even more off and at b&h I even see a few times they throw a panasonic 50mm or 85mm f1.8 as free.

I think we need more what they call bias really. Most of us won't switch every few weeks from brands so the whole you should get the canon instead of sony is mostly useless. I would rather see more youtubers leaning into a brand and go deeper instead of rather shallow compares of gear they mostly don't own. Yes that means when someone talks about a issue and maybe a workaround for that issue he/she is not 'making up excuses for the brand' but providing useful feedback for people who are already in that eco-system.

You forgot one additional aspect: Brand Boycott. ( Under no circumstances you would buy or use products from a certain brand ) For me that Brand is Sony. For example, if you’d send me a FX3 for free, i would not use it, instead i would sell it and buy a Lumix S5 II X .

At the time you have something it could be the best thing out, then time passes and something newer and updated comes out. So yeah you are right as at the time you made the video that product was great. Then 2 months later someone brings out something cheaper and updated, just as it goes bro. I used to use the Lumix G85 then a G9. At that time I loved using them, then I loved the Sony af system. So I moved over to Sony. I filmed this KZfaq video on Sony zve1. It's 30 minutes long but the actual recording was 45 mins. ZVE1 was on sale $1900 full frame 4k60 120 no rolling shutter 💀

16:40 it’s funny you bring that up. I worked at B&H at the time and got the FX3 on an employee discount for the same price as a Lumix s5iix. This evened the issue of price for me. After using both, the fact is I enjoyed filming with the Lumix more for many reasons. That’s a fact for me, in my case. Used in music videos and short films and never missed anything from FX3 other than the color scheme of silver and black. All of these cameras are good but let’s keep it real, the fact is the fx3 is NOT the Christ of cameras. Which was the point of my video. Mind you we know S-Log3 very well but we just liked the lumix more bro. Going on the defense is wild

Just curious... What is the BHphoto employee discount. Seems like BH gets a massive profit margin on fx3.When I worked at Best buy 2 decades ago, employee discount was was 5% over their cost.

I don’t think you have to worry about Sony not being the best camera for most things minus LCD and maybe build quality. I love my Fuji but maybe I shouldn’t have gotten their most expensive lens and just gotten a X100 series and a Sony for wildlife and whatnot…. I can get good results even with their ultra budget kit lens in simple talking head situations. I do prefer their colors to my ZV-1

Great vid, but I do think your reasoning broke down around the S5 iix and the fx3 and arri. There some situations when a s5iix is better than an FX3 fact, and visa versa. Syncroscan alone on s5iiX alone has made my a7s3 useless in some scenarios.

@@rw3452 it's because you provided an argument and said "some scenarios".. and in my head I'm thinking of "what scenarios"? The only thing I can think of is a shitty wedding venue and/or DJ using shitty led lighting. In those cases I just film 24fps and shutter at 1/50 and that generally solves the problem. Far from "unusable". The only scenario I can think of is filming talking head and you want to do vertical and horizontal so you do open gate. But at the same time you can easily just crop in horizontal footage from 16:9 and get plenty resolution for vertical social media and with that... Vertical specific resolution is highly overrated. Maybe a situation where you are walking and want to not have gimbal... But if you are shooting 4k60 you are cropped on s5iiX. You can shoot 4k60 with FX3 and if you need additional stabe you can go to catalyst browse and you will still have closer to full frame coverage than cropped in Panasonic. Resolution also isn't as critical for moving shots due to motion blur so resolution is pixel peeping at that point. There is no situation, for me, where I'm like... "Gosh, I really wish I had an S5IIX right now... " There are clear cut logical reasons why I would pick FX3 over an Alexa if both worth the same $. There are no clear cut logical reasons for me to pick s5iiX over the FX3 for VIDEO in any situation.

@@nVuFilms I’ll give you 2 scenarios within the last couple of months. 1 shoot at pinewood studios with VP set up literally for Sony and the other massive flight simulators for pilots used to train flights the world over. In both of these to situations the phasing and strobe was useless on FX3 without the syncro scan. Even my GH5 would have been better. The FX6 even slightly struggled. I think you assume pretty low res situations. Obviously your situations also could be true for some, but I can’t just rip out a flight simulator that cost millions etc. I hope that helps to explain what I mean. Also I still love Sony and there are loads of situations I’d be leaving a S5iiX or at least would defo prefer the FX3 or A7siii over it really depends on use case.

Color science is the biggest bullshit I've ever heard ... sure it's different, and as you said subjective. But you can actually change every camera log footage to look like the other one :D. Although sometimes it's quite hard.

Sony shooter here. Nikon has got my attention with the z6iii. It does raw 12 bit 6K24 internally at readout speeds of 9ms. That blows everything sony has out of the water. Oh and its $2500. Thoughts?

Also you do realize that sony's dynamic range advantage comes from the fact it applies noise reduction baked into the files right? Also they sure know how to alienate customers. Their software sucks ass and is always broken, buggy, and unfinished. The sony a7siii will be my last ever sony camera.

Nuthugger or not... how stupid would I be switching to Nikon for some specs... and a couple months later Sony releases 6k120 or someshit with better dynamic range. Whether you are sony, panasonic, or canon... nothing Nikon is doing is worth switching to unless for some reason you are desperate to shoot raw internally.
