We are in Newark Penn Station, where we see the brand new LCD departure board, which has taken the place of the old Solari split-flap display that had been there for years. This board was just installed; about two weeks before Thanksgiving. It's quite bright, and even comes with a computerized sound to simulate a Solari Board flipping over. I'm not a fan of it, personally, but that's progress for you. If you have any questions about the video, feel free to message me. Comments are welcome. The video was taken on November 29th, 2015.

Textbook bad/good skeumorphism. The video is harder to read than either a real Solari board or a video display that didn't try to look like one, but the audio works well as a signal that the display is changing.

Nothing better than an old analog technology emulated by new digital system. The Solari board’s advantage was that the clacking sound alerted passengers of every update. Quiet monitors don’t do that. I would make them all black like the actual solar board and emulated every single movement of the flap just like good old times.

I think it's cool. Yeah, the original Solari boards and the "click click" were awesome, but there has to be progress and I like the way the evolution was handled.

I couldn’t have put it better myself! Modernization is important but when it comes to passenger trains in North America, there is such a thing as too modern. What we need is a mix of both old AND new!

I really hope the new board at 30th Street Station looks nothing like this. It's digital! You don't need simulated lines through the words and numbers that serve absolutely no purpose.

are you serious? It's not a very good depiction of the original really- it has these really contrasty gradients to represent the flaps. All the other pictures of these solari boards, you can barely tell it's not a solid piece before it starts flapping. They should tone down the stripes and maybe speed up the flippy animation. How about making the character change to the new character instantly, and just keep playing the flip animation behind the letter/number. That way you get the classic flipping thing and you can have the noise, but you also don't have to wait for the animation to play to read the new value. The flipping animation isn't just for looks, anyway, it also catches your eye that a value was updated. If it didn't have the flipping, they'd need to blink or change color like other classic display boars do- like off track betting boards or stock "tickers".

Amtrak is trying to seem more modern. I think it's ridiculous, but unfortunately, they're taking over at an alarming rate. The only stations I know that still use Solari boards are Secaucus Junction (as far as I know, one of the last ones installed, as the station opened in 2003) and Atlantic City (which has hardly been touched since it opened in 1989, being that it's a very lightly used station).

Because Amtrak needs them to be ADA friendly and be able to broadcast public alerts. Refurbishing a Solari board costs upwards of $100,000 but these screens and the computer infrastructure behind it cost about $11 mil.

I'd prefer a display with good typography, that's easy to read - that's why a sign exists after all. This design is bad because it is low contrast and the fixed spacing of the letters makes it hard to read. It has all the limitations of a solari board (and then some) and none of the charm
@amtrak1214

@@Butlinsgvn6 think of it as a more modern solari board. A lot of us like to feel pride in our american traditions, so either get used to it or move to Europe or Japan! But shut up and let some people enjoy what they have!

Especially when there are more than one flip board solutions out there that can even do motion video if you scale it up enough, this is an insult to design. They should tear down this garbage tomorrow and replace it with a REAL flip board because this is complete trash. I bet a woman made this decision.
