Lyrics:
All of these lines across my face
Tell you the story of who I am
So many stories of where I've been
And how I got to where I am
But these stories don't mean anything
When you've got no one to tell them to
It's true... I was made for you
I climbed across the mountain tops
Swam all across the ocean blue
I crossed all the lines and I broke all the rules
But baby I broke them all for you
Because even when I was flat broke
You made me feel like a million bucks
You do and I was made for you

My beautiful daughter died by suicide in 2014, she was 33. She LOVED you and went to any concert she could to see you. This song was played at her service and it’s so beautiful. Finally we are taking Katie’s ashes to Ireland in September, we will stand on the Cliffs of Moher and let her go. We will play ‘The Story’, and cry. You made her so happy. 💜

@@songbird1307 Yes! And the way she sustains notes…just so, so good. What a gift! Not familiar with Shelby Lynn’s work but it seems I should be, based on your comment. Any recommendations on which song/s to start with?

@@mikamamma I haven't heard Shelby Lynn's music in awhile. She is not a current artist. I had a couple of her CD's in the late 90's. I am not sure if she still records music. She started out as country on the 1st CD that I bought and then went more bluesy on the 2nd CD. She played Johnny Cash's mom in the movie Walk the Line. Literally the only song I remember loving back then of hers is called something like "What About the Love We Made". I loved the soul in her voice. Just talking about this makes me want to explore her music again. 🙂

I hate to feel this way (cuz I love Brandi) but I sometimes feel that her vocal breaks are contrived...not natural.
@mikamamma
@mikamamma 2 жыл бұрын
@@457Deb I get ya…I can feel the same way about certain singers, myself. I don’t feel that way about Brandi, though. It may be because I don’t listen to enough of her songs. To me, the way she so skillfully emotes justifies the aching breaks in her voice and I just love it. But I definitely get how it could affect you (and maybe others) differently.

"All of these lines across my face, tell you the story of who I am, so many stories of where I've been and how I got to where I am". These words saved me during many rounds of chemo and radiation. I was diagnosed with breast cancer when I had a kindergartener and a 4th grader. My boys were so young, I told my oncology team, bring it on, I can take it...I just have live long enough to get them through high school. The chemo took it's toll and aged me so much faster than my friends, it was hard to deal with. Now I know the lines across my face tell the story of where I've been. 15 years out and one boy has graduated from college and one who is a Junior...both are thriving and I celebrate life every day. Thank you, Brandi for putting into words, what I could not.

my best friend passed away a few weeks ago.. we met in the bar I had started working at when I moved to NorCal over 7 years ago - it was karaoke night and after she heard me sing, she bee-lined over to me and asked if I knew any Brandi Carlile to sing with her - I immediately said, “The Story” and we tore the roof down that night ..the rest is history 😏 we ended up going to see your show in Oakland later that year and it was one of the best times of my entire life - we sang so many of your songs together throughout the years, you have always been our fav **if you remember the girl at Kate Wolf Festival with the “I FREAKIN’ ❤️ YOU!” sign several years ago, that was me 😆 I was standing with another one of my girlfriends who passed away named Bri, who also absolutely loved you Brandi, you’ve been my crutch the past few weeks and I want to say thank you, so very much for your words and beautiful voice; if you ever have a show in Iowa.. I will soooo be there! rest in peace, Em 😌

I heard it covered by 5er Blech first. That is quite the rendition. I like this original too. It would be awesome to see the full credits with this video. From website of Jeffery Pepper Rogers : “Her [Brandi’s] bandmate Phil Hanseroth wrote “The Story” before they even started playing together. Since her debut, all of the music appearing under the name Brandi Carlile has been the product of an extraordinarily close partnership of Carlile and the twin brothers Tim and Phil Hanseroth. All three write songs and share the writing credits equally for every song regardless of who contributes what (à la Lennon and McCartney).”

This is truly one of the most beautiful songs ever written, and I cannot imagine any other voice delivering it besides that of Brandi Carlile. It reminds us that we all have a "story," and our stories are typically a mixed bag of joy and pain, but despite our struggles, our stories are what make us who we are. This is song elicits so much emotion and should be celebrated as one of the greatest songs of all time.

I cant believe I heard this song for the first time today while driving along the Hudson in the Adirondacks. It broke me and I needed it. So many losses and too many deaths contrasted with meaning barely unfolding and so little joy, it all just builds up to a moment when only something so powerful as these words sung from this voice releases the inexpressible, crushing inner vexation of the soul, and I can breathe again. Even for 5 minutes. It'll have to be enough. Thank you, God.

But Brandi didn’t write the song, here is the story behind The Story: From website of Jeffery Pepper Rogers : “Her [Brandi’s] bandmate Phil Hanseroth wrote “The Story” before they even started playing together.

This reads like the soundtrack of my 20's. Nothing but pain, violence, poverty, solitude, struggle . . . and one tiny bright spot: my baby daughter. This song makes me think that when it comes to relationships in general (friends, family, lovers etc.), I believe that every single thing we've every been through has, yes made us who we are today, yet they are NOT FOR US TO KEEP FOR OURSELVES. Our stories are meant to be told! Our hurts, our joys, our sorrows. Even our embarrassment and shame are meant to be told! They are meant for others! You never know if your story is going to help someone is some way! Please don't keep things to yourselves! Be an open book! There is so much joy in telling your story!

My mom has loved Brandi for ever since I can remember, she’s been to at least seven of her concerts and I’ve been to three. Two months ago I attempted to take my own life. When I was in the recovery mental facility for several weeks the nurses would let us each pick a song to listen to during hygiene time, and I always picked this one, every time, and every time I would cry, but for some reason I knew everything would turn out ok. When I needed her most, I reverted to what comforted me as a child-this song. She will never see this, but Brandi gave me a piece of my mother when I was far from her and hurting, and it saved me. Thank you so much for this Brandi.

Oh Lily, I also find this song strangely comforting, perhaps because every word captures the greatest losses and loves of my life: the death of my 28-year-old son in 2002, the divorce from my soul mate five years later. I have learned to live with both, but my life is forever diminished. I have another son (his brother) and my love and our shared loss keep me going. Bless you and hold tight to your relationship with your mother, which sounds like a Godsend.

Brandi has done other amazing work as well, & is also now part of a female group called Highwomen (a takeoff on the name of the male country supergroup called Highwaymen) ... most recently she has done a new album with Tanya Tucker, both singing with her & co-producing it along with Shooter Jennings ...

Well I never knew this song existed until I saw "The Sun" peform it. But Obviously 37 million views speaks for itself. I don't believe beautiful music is diminished by having a Super Star (or even a Sun) make it "more beautiful" I think "The Sun" nailed it when she said (performing as "The Sun) gave people the chance to experience the essence of her without any preconceived notions of who, or what, she was. BINGO. I had years ago decided I did not like this person's voice ( I perceived it at too juvenile, and shrill) When I saw the Sun sing "The Story" I was amazed and I thought it to be one of the most beautiful vocal performances I had ever experienced. I never would have known "The Story" Brandi Carlisle or "The Sun" had I not happened to turn on the TV to watch some Netflix and stumbled across "The Masked Singer" instead.

This song has been my song for my husband and I for the last 16 years. We struggled a lot together and I can't imagine sharing that with anyone else. The words of this song describe it perfectly.

She is one of my favorite singers. She has such a powerful voice. I could cry listening to her sing. Saw her live and was so blown away. She is as awesome live as she is on her albums.

I'm typing this comment on my Grandma's account right now, she passed away a few months ago. She was so unconditionally loving no matter who you were, She had no hate in her heart and just wanted to spread love around the world. She moved in after my Grandpa died and we all thought she had Many years left. There was no explanation for her death however its safe to say she passed from a broken heart from being away from my Grandpa Jim. This was one of the last things she ever listened too. Though it pains me to think she suffered without the touch of my grandfather I find beauty in her endless love for him and to me it is almost poetic, not even death could move you away from the love she had to give nor could it separate my grandparents. As I go through her pictures and video history I see that this song was one of the last things she ever heard, and it reminds me that she longed to be together with her husband, even though she could smile through the suffering she was in great pain. That pain is over now and my beautiful GrandMother Marijean Thomas is at peace spreading her love for eternity.

We’ve all got our Story - you are amazing and I’ve had a really hard time this past year. End of a long relationship, loss of my job, a move, and anxiety and depression. Your music has been a lifeline- your love of family and your songs have given me hope and I’m seeing you in Boston in October. I’m coming alone but that’s alright- this is a gift to myself. Thank you Brandi Carlile ❤ joanie
