If, like us, you grew up listening to Incubus (‪@incubusTV‬), you might be stoked to find out that lead singer Brandon Boyd (‪@brandonboydofficial‬) is a psychedelic advocate 🍄 Recently, Shylah Ray (‪@shylahray‬) sat down with him to discuss his journey to discovering mushrooms, his first ayahuasca experience, his creative process, his spiritual path, and much more. It was an incredibly inspiring conversation.
This is the inaugural interview in our new and improved Medicine Music series, in partnership with PORTAL, a psychedelic advocacy project started by Propeller (propeller.la). In this series, we explore the relationship between plant medicines, creativity, personal growth, and mysticism with our favorite artists. ‪@6LACKOfficial‬, ‪@thequincat‬, and ‪@melissaetheridge‬, are just a few of the conversations we have lined up in the coming months. Stay tuned!

This interview is GOLD. Brandon Boyd never ceases to awe & amaze me. I can sit & listen to him for HOURS. He's such an idyllic human that I relate to on so many levels, especially soulfully. It's one thing to have a person's talent & art move you, but it's something else entirely to have their very existence validate your life trajectory. Although I've never personally met or shared an intimate physical space with him (besides the Incubus concerts I've been to), I feel incredibly connected to his energy & presence. It's indescribable. His level of social awareness, emotional intelligence & overall approach to "being" is something that I not only actively experience myself, but continually aspire to maintain & strengthen in my own spiritual practices. It just goes to show how intricately tied together we all are & the sooner we realize this, the better off we'll be. thank you, universe, for always having my back. this video enriched my soul when I needed it the most 🖤

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. Jesus Christ loves you so much that He died for your sins and rose from the dead. If you repent from evil ways, believe that Jesus has paid the fine for your sins on the cross and confess Him as your Lord, you will be saved. You see, we all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, that's why Jesus Christ, fullness of Godhead bodily, lived a perfect life, fulfilled the prophecies and law, shed His Blood at the cross just so you could be forgiven, reconciled back to the Father, receive God's love, be made a new creation, whole, sanctified. It's not about religion and what good works you can do to earn salvation, it's only by grace through faith in the finished works of Jesus Christ. Read God's Word, preferably start with Gospel of John, pray for the Holy Spirit to fill you, give you wisdom and revelation that way you're born again and see your life changed by the Spirit of the Most High. Much love and God bless you!

That is absolutely amazing. There was only one point in this interview i had incubus playing in my head and it was this EXACT line. I wonder if that is a shared experience with a lot of folks watching this. Probably helps it’s one of my all time favorite lyrics, not to mention the current news… but it’s still feels special to scroll down and see the one single solitary exact lyric I thought of while watching. After it was over, i also had “further down the river” but not while. Only after.

@@livefreeanddonttread that’s a great thought that i never considered. I love both bands too, and you’re right about them espousing similar ideas, albeit in very different musical forms/styles. Both bands are all about daring to nonconform. Standing up to the drabness and sameness of everyday society and “sticking it the man,” so to speak, even if it means putting your bland but comfortable lifestyle at risk. In other words, anything , even death, is preferable to being just another boring NPC. Lol

The reason ‘making it” is held in such high regard, is because it is literally the “self actualisation” part of life. Making it is not a destination, it is the path of purpose.

@@matthewbailey8588 Don't be a dumbass. Maybe you don't understand it from the perspective we do- and that's ok! "How it sounds" is not what we're referring to. It's hearing the message of the lyrics from a new point of view; from a place in our lives which simply didn't exist 20 years ago. At a time when I've truly had enough of the world and it's people's mindless games. Sometimes bursting (politely) into flames seems like a sweet release from the emotional toll of existence. But also, at that moment in the show, I felt as light as a feather, like I was at the exact right olace and time - in the night air, under the stars, with someone I love, getting exactly what I needed from the performance, just as intended by the artist.

When brandon was talking about having the drink poured into a cup and it was overflowing, it reminded me of what I read in this book the path to longevity - During the Japanese meiji era ( 1868 - 1912) there was a famous Zen master, called Nan-in. One day he received a university professor who came to inquire about Zen philosophy. Nan-in started pouring tea into the professor's cup until full, and then kept on pouring. The professor watched the tea overflowing out of the cup until full, and then kept on pouring. The professor watched the tea overflowing out of the cup for moment, until he no longer could restrain himself. It is overfill. No more will go in! He exclaimed. Gently, Nan-in replied 'Like this cup, you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you what is Zen, unless you first empty your cup?'😊

completely random, but when I was 14 or 15, I was sent to rehab by the juvenile court system and I was in there with another girl who was 20 (yes you can still be on juvenile probation and sent to juvenile facilities when you're 20) - her name was Ashley - and she was in there for attempting to order LSD on the dark web and apparently failing and getting caught by her probation officer (yes, the juvenile court just sends people to rehab for trying to buy acid lol, especially with girls because there aren't as many facilities for us to serve actual time or get "therapy"). Anyway, her favorite band in the world was Incubus, and she flipped out at this other girl and eventually started CRYING because someone said "Oh! I love Incubus" but ended up only knowing the song Drive. She went on a long, emotional rant about how their other music was so much more intriguing and psychedelic. Went home after 60 days and thought I'd try listening to Incubus's less mainstream music and I have been a huge fan of Brandon and Incubus ever since. So, silver linings, thanks Ashley lol.

Im an incubus super fan since year 2002, and im 37 now, and to be honest , REALTALK, their music is my energy, i feel their connections, its like marrying a person til death, like cheating to other music but still loyal to them, its like going back and forth , i dont know but everytime i heard their music i feel alive, and realtalk even theres a lot of very popular music out there like at first its nice to hear but while it lasts it gets boring, but still going back listening to incubus, New music are just passin by when i hear many times. BUT INCUBUS music is different, even how many times I play or hear their music Im still loving it. Doesnt grow old. There is something special on the lyrics of their song its unique from the other. The lyrics of their song is not old fashioned and not common.

I was just blessed enough to see Incubus at Aftershock. I went mostly just to see them cause out of the tons of concerts I have been to, i had never had the absolute pleasure of seeing Incubus perform live. I had not listened to them in years but listened to them on repeat back in the early 2000s. Seeing Brandon on stage and picking up on his energy (and how damn well he has aged and performs) led me into looking up about him and to this vid. I love his energy! What a lovely human! Thank you for being, Brandon, and for what you do...and thank you for staying away from those hardcore nasty drugs! Btw, I too had an amazing psychadelic experience my first time with cannabis. I was heavy into it in my 20s...but then I went into nursing and can no longer enjoy. ETOH became my crutch and I just want to be SOBER and more healthy at this point in my life and am on that journey. I have never tried the psychadelics and can neither condone nor speak against them. Instead, I don't need drugs...I can get high off his energy and the music. I love Brandon and Incubus on a deep spiritual level. I too love all sorts of music and have listened to/been into most of the bands and artists they both mentioned. I believe that people who are open to all types of music are more open in general and are on another level. I have grown into and out of all sorts of bands and artists but Incubus and Brandon will forever be a fave i love his wisdom and his words about God ❤

As a kid my friends and I loved incubus but man I really understand their music alot more. Alot of us had experience with media brainwashing leading to war which led to coming home kinda broken. Then through the magic of the universe psychedelics came our way and a healing journey of mind, soul and body has ensued for many years. Now I understand their songs SO much better and they are so complex, healing and poignant.

The level of consciousness when experiencing the effects of shrooms, weed and music, combined with visual hallucinations is quite an amazing four or five hour event that everyone should witness. Pink Floyd dark side of the moon and the Mandelbrot set. Unreal.

He's speaking of the witness -popular in native archetypes. There's that popular saying of humans being the universe experiencing itself. Perhaps, in certain mental states (not necessarily facilitated by substance use, btw) we can tap into that which is everything and nothing. It's just a level of awareness of the oneness or the singularity or the lack of separation - whatever you want to call it. But it's probably one of the fundamental truths (in my humble opinion) that every religion teaches but often goes unacknowledged. I suspect our existence is super intended in the fabric of the universe and the macro and the micro are two sides of one coin. I've loved the band since I was a young girl and I genuinely think it's that sort of esoteric understanding projected into the music that makes it resonate with those of us who are .. a little more sensitive to the energy of the universe.. whatever that means. It's so fun to go back and listen to those songs I used to listen to constantly because I loved them in youth and didn't understand why but now, it actually makes sense.

On my first acid trip Incubus were playing all the time...in my head. Especially the "Nowhere Fast" guitar sounds at the beginning of the verse. They bring me back to that night easily 😂 But all the lyrics and positivity were floating around in my head when I hung out at the sea that night. It's pretty cool that the following album Morning View described some views that I really experienced. Though I was a bit disappointed musically.

Little story: (for background my mom’s favorite band was, and probably still is, incubus so I was exposed to them since I was a baby) one day we were listening to S.C.I.E.N.C.E. And “A Certain Shade of Green” came on. After the song finished she paused the album and asked me what I thought the song meant. I was probably 7/8 years old, so I had no clue😂 she explained that the metaphor “certain shade of green” is referring to people not taking action when opportunities present themselves. The green light is there yet so many people won’t go for it, as if it wasn’t the correct shade of green. She also did this after we listening to “The Cave” by Mumphord and Sons. It was times like these where she would urge me to look for the deeper meaning of things that shaped how my brain operates today. Not only do I look for the deeper metaphors and themes in songs because of her, but also with everything in life. Something as simple as rain has given me deep insights that, without her guidance, I probably never would’ve thought of. I have my mother and Incubus to thank for my deep longing to dive into the spiritual/metaphorical nature of everyday life and I’m eternally grateful for it. I still listen to incubus to this day and they were even my Spotify #1 artist in my most recent wrapped😂 I’ve gone on a huge tangent but reading this comment section feels like home. Such beautiful stories and words are being shared here and it’s not something I see on the internet much. From the deepest part of my heart, I’m sending love to everyone here🙏❤ thank you
