I discovered this video a couple of years ago. I was going through a very fucking dark time, the worst year in my life. I remember it was like 6AM and I stumbled into my room with half a bottle of Jack and just put on an indie rock playlist, and was gonna smoke ciggies and drink myself to sleep. But then this song came on, and for the first time in a long time I smiled. So cheers Brandan for helping me out of a bad time

I took my 15-year-old daughter to see The Killers last December. We've been through a lot together, and it's rare for her to be in a good place where she just feels good. It was her first 'real' concert, in the mosh pit, surrounded by fans, hand in hand with her Mum as we sang along with the crowd - the line 'cause I don't shine if you don't shine' hits so deep for us both, and has become our personal mantra. I love this band so much ♥

On the corner of main street Just tryin' to keep it in line You say you wanna move on, and You say I'm falling behind Can you read my mind? Can you read my mind? I never really gave up on Breakin' out of this two-star town I got the green light I got a little fight I'm gonna turn this thing around Can you read my mind? Can you read my mind? The good old days, the honest man The restless heart, the Promised Land A subtle kiss that no one sees A broken wrist and a big trapeze Oh well, I don't mind, you don't mind Cause I don't shine if you don't shine Before you go, can you read my mind? It's funny how you just break down Waiting on some sign I pull up to the front of your driveway With magic soaking my spine Can you read my mind? Can you read my mind? The teenage queen, the loaded gun The drop dead dream, the Chosen One A southern drawl, the world unseen A city wall and a trampoline Oh well, I don't mind, you don't mind 'Cause I don't shine if you don't shine Before you jump Tell me what you find When you read my mind Slipping in my faith until I fall He never returned that call Woman, open the door, don't let it sting I wanna breathe that fire again She said, I don't mind, you don't mind Cause I don't shine if you don't shine Put your back on me Put your back on me Put your back on me The stars are blazing like rebel diamonds cut out of the sun When you read my mind

I'm in my 40s and I am back in school. I listen to this song before closing my computer most nights. It is unbelievably comforting during this uncertain time. I am scared to start over, but this song makes me feel like it is okay to take a chance. Luckily, I have a very understanding and patient husband. "Put your back on me" makes me cry. 3:43 I hope everyone has someone who has their back.

You don't know love until you feel that calm glow of them and then your heart gets squeezed just enough to hurt. Yet it's still pleasant. And you're excited, and scared. And really, really scared about leaving; more scared of it than dying because you have to live without them, and you don't even want to fathom you minus them. How can you pick up the pieces if they took them with them? That's what this song is about. Nothing would separate them from you because of your love. We must believe that to be true to be with someone. It's not always true. Some people are meant to leave because of some reason. Maybe they never loved you, but more likely was it was hard enough on them, or they weren't no good and they should have gone. And maybe you should have known they were no good for you. Some people are scarred from people leaving or abusing them and making them leave. I think that heals, but it takes time, and more than not leaving. My boyfriend was in a hard spot recently, he told me to leave, because 'everybody does'. Nobody else wants to make the sacrifices necessary to help him, to really be there. Because it's really hard, and there's little for you specifically to gain; it's not about you. Lots of risk to yourself personal and risk of failure. Maybe I'm wrong and I can't help. I considered it as he asked me to. Weighed it like the Egyptians. I guess maybe what you won't do gets pretty extreme because of love, because I was running scenarios where terrible things befell me and thinking, yeah, I could do that for him. I refused. I want to try. I knew he thought giving up hope would be easier because it meant he could give up, he wouldn't have to try for my sake. Throwing that away throws everything away, bad and good. I have been trying since this, even more than when I thought I was doing everything I could and it was tearing me apart, tearing us apart. My job now is not to make it better, as I should have known was his, but to be there. I got what he said. I had thought I did but I really did get it. Carry the weight when it's too heavy, holding his hand and listening, no pushing, not leaning too much. And now that he's taking getting better seriously consistently, and stopped trying to hide when it wasn't, it seems to be working. I knew I couldn't watch whatever happened knowing I could be there for him when nobody was, knowing he could leave ME and leave a lot of effort 'wasted', knew full well just how easy it wouldn't be, and goddamn terrified of having what I wanted, everything being good, and feeling secure and having it ripped away from me. Or being forced to choose between him and where I wanted to be and wanted to do... but completely willing to bet on being happy whatever happens with him. I knew I loved him when I thought of how often that hard heart squeeze would happen with no glow if I chose the 'easy' way and bad things happened. It wouldn't be my fault, since he asked me to go, though it was my choice to prove him right, but I know it would feel like my fault and I would be miserable. Watching from afar, helpless. And I would be watching because I do love him. God, physically holding his hand has been so, so important to me. When he told me to leave I was so scared he wouldn't take it. I'm glad I didn't assume he would make me go whether I wanted to or not, or that he wouldn't take my hand when I told him it would be okay (again). He's so special. Oh, I can't even describe it. I've never met anyone so incapable of ever looking down on me, as people seem to tend to do... the way he pulls me closer half asleep if I have a nightmare. I understand him more than anyone and he understands me and that is something to be treasured. So many things that you know you don't want to let go, even with everyone you know telling you that you should try; somebody else may be good, ' ' better ' ', but everything inside you screams at the thought. Some things that language was not made to describe. Like his smile or the tinkle in his laugh, it's like a breath of life. It's so nice to love and be loved that it crushes, you realize hard things can be beautiful, and you're willing to fly close to the sun. You can take a little risk if you put your back on them. Of course, if they choose them over you, they take along fewer pieces and it isn't quite so hard to put yourself back together (though it doesn't seem to make you forget about the good times), which is good for Brandon. Imagine if some girl tried to take most of the good bits. Hmpf.

I know the killers are a huge band but I feel like in a lot of ways they don’t get enough credit. This song is up there with Dylan and Springsteen stuff, plus he’s an actual good singer. I’ve always loved the killers lyrics they’re far from the filler refrigerator poetry of their era of indie rock, I feel like they’re very evocative and paint vivid emotional pictures, and like I said they wrote amazing ear worm melodies both instrumentally and vocally. I think Brandon is just a great vocalist. This was amazing.
