The Situations

3 жыл бұрын

In this first episode of The Hope Dealer, Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino sits down to interview fellow MTV alumni Brandon Novak - formerly of Viva La Bam, Jackass, and ex-professional skateboarder.
Both men have another thing in common too: they overcame their personal obstacles of addiction to lead a better life.
Mike talks to Brandon about sobriety, resentment, growing up in Baltimore, and more.
"Tough Times Don't Last, But Tough People Do"
TIMECODES OF WHAT WAS DISCUSSED:
0:50 - Brandon's story, and celebrating five years clean and sober
3:44 - Brandon: "I'm not in control of anything. The moment I put expectations on you, all I've done is put unrealistic expectations on you... I'm sure to be let down... The #1 offender is resentment."
5:40 - Getting sober is just the beginning
7:00 - The dangers of having a job that consisted of "knowing everything"
8:31 - How Mike helped Brandon get out of his own way
11:00 - What it means to say "I'm an alcoholic"
12:05 - Do you still have an obsessive or addictive personality?
15:35 - "My defects have become my assets"
16:57: - What was meant to destroy you has given you an entirely new life
18:45 - Brandon on being a certified interventionist
20:39 - Brandon's new book "The Streets of Baltimore"
22:54 - Brandon's people were finished with him
24:40 - Brandon didn't have a laptop before quarantine
26:35 - Brandon is a keynote speaker for the DEA
29:39 - What advice could you give someone who has to make a change?
31:24 - Any specific stories that standout you want to share?
35:54 - What should people know about the steps of recovery?
37:41 - Finding 1,000 ways to fail
38:05 - Closing thoughts: "find what you love"
40:58 - "Tough times don't last, but tough people do"

Huge Novak fan and a fan of Mike. I just celebrated 5 years sober in May. I battled a 15 year opiate addiction. My life has completely changed. Mine and Brandon’s sober dates are like a day or two apart. I have a video on my channel the thumbnail is a map that says “Why Ohio?!”

The Situations thank you, do you have an email? I can send you my video. I would love o talk addiction and sobriety with you. That’s ones reason I started my page, I wanted a bigger platform t tell my stories. People used to ask why I would ever move from Florida to Ohio and when I would tell them, my now wife would always ask me why I told everyone, I always say “you never know who you are talking to” meaning, you never know what they are going through.

I've been in rehab with 10 other addicts and we watched Brandon Novak's addiction story on KZfaq. I ALSO use to love Jersey shore and have been watching all of Mike and Lauren's food reviews. Not in a million years would I see a collab from both of these men. I'm 3 weeks sober and I dont plan on going back. Whenever I think about using I TELL somebody.

I grew up watching Novak getting wasted while I was getting wasted. I'm so blessed to have celebrated 13 years sober this past July. I should be dead with the things I did to myself. I'm so unbelievably proud of these two role models. If anyone is struggling with the disease and honestly wants to get help, reach out to someone. You don't have to do it alone; actually you can't. God Bless Everyone!

It was one of the hardest things I had to do but the payoff was a lot better than using. Thanks for putting this out! You didn't talk over Brandon your sincerity in genuinely LISTENING to him could really be seen. I pick up on things like that and haven't seen such a natural discussion. I'm trying once again at 39 yrs old to get sober . I woke up and had some green tea and decided to watch something positive instead of opening social media etc... I'm so glad I did. I listen to you and Lauren's podcast which I LOVE and heard u both talk about this new project. ... I'm so glad I chose to start my day on this positive note. Thanks for sharing Mike and Brandon..

That being said I was addicted to opiates for 12 years Started with oxycontin and moved to heroin when they became scarce and expensive Started selling heroin to support my habit I got sick of the chase, got sick of being sick got sick of being watched and constantly harassed by cops, got sick of the whole scene The day came where I had enough and looked up detoxing from opiates That when I discovered methadone I went to many clinics is was in and out of them still dabbling with using blah blah and one day it clicked I don't want to Live that life anymore, I dont want to die like this or spend 20 years in jail for dealing I got back on methadone worked the program and it saved my life and it gave me my life back and I was able to be a functioning member of society. Alot of people look down on methadone or suboxone because yes, it can be abused and used as a crutch for when you just don't have your drugs and you don't have to be sick but can still use (not suboxone so much because it blocks the opiate receptors, if you take it like you're supposed to) I've been clean for 9 years and still to this day I still have moments where I want to use but I know where that road leads and it solves nothing, I recommend it to anyone looking to stop using as long as that's what they truly want and if they are willing to be uncomfortable for a period of time, because even that way there is a still a time of withdrawal when coming off methadone, some say it's a bit worse and longer because of is half life, especially these days street drugs have become more tainted than ever One of the best decisions I've ever made

I watched this because of Novak, I follow his story and progress because while his story isn't any different than any addict, I follow his story because we hail from the same town, were active on the street at the same time and on more occasions than I can count we have stood in the dope lines in Highland town and various other sections of east Baltimore. I knew who he was but never approached him cuz #1 in that scenario, I didn't care nor did I think he cared to be recognized. I always thought if I approached him in that place in time then he would've tried to get in on my drugs thinking I was into his celebrity. That's how goofy your mind works. And #2 I'm just not that type of person. But none the less, we've been in the same shit hole back alley holes, 30 people deep waiting for the pitcher to come around the corner and hit the line off. For that simple reason I follow his recovery. I always remember being shocked that he was copping on the street, thinking he had the money to have connects where you didn't need to do that....but that's how hard he fell. It shocked me that were copping the same dope and coke in the pits of Baltimore city. Any way, I came here for Brandon but was pleasantly surprised by Mike. I couldn't stand him on that damn show. Now I wonder if he was merely playing a character on a "reality" show or if he's really grown that much. I couldn't believe how humble he was...it was totally unexpected.

Mike you haven't posted on your channel in a year! Hope everything is great with your lovely family, especially that little mini Romeo. He is absolutely adorable and is your twin. Best of luck you four. 💗
