Brandon is a breath of fresh air. I had those terrible teachers who told us we had to write their way and it ruined me and my enthusiasm for writing for many years. I'm writing again and doing it my way and so excited to hear someone like Brandon say it's ok. I've been using a lot of these tools and didn't even know it and all the things he has taught, that I didn't know, are already helping so much! Thank you for these videos :) So informative and helpful!

Chirpy Writing ive only ever had it the other way where teachers would tell me to write it whatever way I wanted, but then didnt give me tools or processes, Im glad that Brandon does both and gives us many different directions and tools as well as telling us to do whatever. It helps guide us in writing and encourages freedom

Yo thats honestly the worst. Writing, like most artforms is a way to express yourself, your innermost thoughts and feelings and there is nobody who could tell me or your or anyone how we SHOULD express ourselves. Thats the whole point after all, that we should be able to do that exactly as we please. Thats what I really like about this class - the emphasis on "I know how I like to do it, so Im gonna tell you about it and I hope it helps you when you do it your way".

When I was in college I had a short story professor who called my writing too literary. He marked me down at every chance and even failed me in the class. He made me believe it was a bad thing, and even had my opinion of my writing so low that I stopped writing for years. It wasn’t until recently that I understood what it meant to be literary. Brandon’s description of it makes it even clearer. I’m so glad I discovered this course and the videos.

Can I just go out of my way to say how much I am enjoying these videos? This is the third time I'm taking Brandon's course virtually lol, but while a lot of the stuff repeats (which makes absolute sense) it is still worth it watching the next year round. Thanks for recording these. While I am not even a writer (though I did write a book for fun when I was a teenager) it is fascinating to listen to. Same thing with writing excuses. You don't really need to be a writer to enjoy it. Kinda like listening to audio commentary or special features of movies.... Thanks again.

I am surprised that they (including a student mentioning it) didnt touch games or dungeons and dragons at least a little. I know the topic is a little bit different, but story telling in these fields can be valuable since the box there is different. When he was talking about 2nd person I was constantly thinking about games. Most of the games are using "what do you do?" or directly "you did this" as story telling. As for D&D it a nice example for focus. As a DM you explain the scene without character focus while the players decide what to take from the explanation and use it for the decisions of their characters. Its strange and maybe a little off topic, but it can be interesting to look at different angles and as "chefs" think about how do these things work, why and how can we use it to improve our writing. The thing is that when I started thinking about 2nd person I ended up amazed how it can work. Even though it can sound edgy its engaging on a different level. The problem is that in a book you cannot make decisions (unless its one of these books that goes "You choose to talk go to page 92" "You choose to attack go to page 102"). However a part of a book where you go first person, but someone explains to you "Dont you remember? You walked into the inn with this blissful expression on your face and before anyone knew you cut the throat of the mercenary with the eyepatch for the name of... hell if I remember the name." or something. Not that this is not done constantly, but I thought that in this line of thinking something interesting may come up as a tool.

Funny you would mention this. I stumbled across these videos by youtube suggestion, after combing through a LOT of videos on dungeon mastering, world building, and story telling. I'm hoping that both the practice of d&d, and these theoretical lessons, will finally help me get to a place where I can write an interesting story.

@@MegatronTarantulas I believe he mentioned early on that "women" was essentially the group he was gonna use as a substitute for any minority. About DnD, is it hard to pick up? I never got to play it as a kid. (Lack of friends (that played the game)) I would perhaps be interested in it.

A really good example of the passive voice being used well and often is in the Bartimaeus Trilogy, where the main character is a shape shifter and would describe whatever his current form was in a passive voice, but then the internal dialogue of his thoughts were in first person. One excerpt is: "The cat slunk back into a corner, pressing itself as small as it would go. Any moment now, that eye would see me. . ." pg 188.

I would say that The Matrix is more "Rags to Riches" than "Heroes Journey". Neo's life is definitely not boring. He's a professional hacker and, during his spare time, searches for proof that his world isn't what it seems. That puts him closer to "person out of place" than "youngster in a boring life". Phases 2 and 3 apply to both story arcs, but phase 4 definitely leans more toward "Rags to Riches" again. He never goes "back home"; he goes to a completely new home. He literally rules over Agent Smith by "hacking" into him and destroying him. The other agents then run away. It's the same in the following movies. The hunted became the hunter.
@sebastianwagner7334
@sebastianwagner7334 4 жыл бұрын
It has been quite some time since you wrote this, but I reply anyway. I disagree. I think the immense differences between the Matrix and the real world, so the known and unknown world, lends itself far better to the heroes journey. Whatever was in the Matrix is irrelevant for the events, except the agents, who are themself not really part of the matrix but from the real world, so rising above his live as it is in the matrix is never really a theme. The stations of the Hero's Journey in contrast basically fit perfectly onto the the events that happen in "the Matrix".

I like writing in third person because I know my viewpoint character better than they know themselves. I can focus even more on character because I can get deeper, with feelings and intuitions as well as thoughts (showing this instead of telling is the fun part!). --Christie Valentine Powell, author of 'The Spectra Unearthed'

Can the limited third person also describe whats happening in the scene that the main character itself does not sees? Brandon mentioned in earlier lectures that limited third person can only tell what the main character sees and I was confused, I thought limited third person could also describe what is happening in the scene that is not visible for him or her.

-- 12:19 "cleaning up after superheroes" was done by Marvel in the late 80s/early 90s. it was called "Damage Control" (DC...?) and it was a company supplied and funded by Stark. I hear it's going to appear in a movie soon too. (it may already have) -- William Faulkner's "As I Lay Dying" is written in first-person with several narrators, each in their own self-named chapter (and it's a real downer but well-written) -- EL Doctorow's "Welcome To Hard Times" is *epistolary* and very bleak, and they made a movie of it bitd. worth a read for technique if nothing else (and/or if you like depressing books about harsh pioneer life).(plus it's short) -- what he calls "found footage" should be referred to in writing as "MS Found" ("M-S" not "miz," short for manuscript, from the Poe story "MS Found in a Bottle") but i'm being picky

I like using first person past tense, but all my endings aren't the endings you expect. They live, but they live a VERY different life now. My favorite example is one where the main character actually is a lone traveling hero instead of staying with the people he cares about and the world he just saved because other people need help too. He's doing good and is fairly happy, but throughout the book the goal is always to save his home and his friends, but now he's doing something completely different.

I think second person could work if you had a character journeying around a dystopian future or something and the second person was in the form of a book or something inworld that tells the character what was in these places before the apocalypse or whatever but it’s actually an unreliable narrator and you get to explore the character seeing how much the world has changed, and it would emphasise that people at the time the book was written didn’t expect things to change in this way

First person has a great strength in that the author can hide their identity from the reader, withholding a lot of very basic information if done well behind the all-concealing word: I. "I did this." "I was that." Is the POV character a woman or a man? A child or an adult? A human or an alien? A bird or a potato? The character can be anything, and the reader won't necessarily know until you tell them, which can be used for lots of interesting reveals in the narrative.

I had an idea for a story a while back where it’s a sci-fi setting and nobody on the planet can hear anything. But every now and then somebody’s born who can hear. So they try to talk or sing, or make music, but they end up looking like crazy people. They end up getting thrown into the asylum because they have no idea why they’re doing things like moving their mouth and banging sticks against things (drumming). Seems a little Twilight zone. No clue how that would be categorized.

Why doesn't he mention 3rd person objective?
@GreeneyedApe
@GreeneyedApe 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for mentioning this. It's possible he sees it as a hybrid - 3rd person + cinematic, for example. He also mentions in this video that "the narrative" is the descriptive (objective) part of the story. Nonetheless I would expect him to mention narrative-alone as a specific kind of voice.

TBH I think he should use reference the Eragon series more as the generic fantasy series. I mean its writer literally wanted an archetypal fantasy series (I'm not trying to be mean to the books, I really enjoyed them).

Can I limit omniscient if it'd give something away in the plot that I don't want the reader to know yet or would that just make it limited?
@tovekauppi1616
@tovekauppi1616 4 жыл бұрын
From my understanding, limited is specifically from one viewpoint at a time. Conceptually it is certainly possible to get the thoughts of several but not all people in a scene, but it would probably be a bit weird. Maybe having a clear narrator would help?
@vivianeb90

@@tovekauppi1616 I think I still don't understand what omniscient actually is like. Can't tell if I have ever read a book with omniscient writing. Because omniscient still feels like it is limited. If what you say makes writing limited, well, then having several viewpoints would make it omniscient? But I thought several limited viewpoints still just make it limited. Like if you write from two people's perspectives, that can't be omniscient because both their knowledge is subjective and still limited. Omniscient means all knowing... but what does that actually look like?
@tovekauppi1616
@tovekauppi1616 4 жыл бұрын
Viv Wallace limited can still have several perspectives, they will just be clearly labelled in different sections, often in different chapters. So you write one chapter from person A’s perspective and then you write a chapter from person B’s perspective and so on. In each chapter, you only get information from one character, including their thoughts, feelings, sensations, what they are doing and so on. In omniscient, you can describe things that none of your characters know for example “little did they know that things were about to change.” Or “while they were talking, a pickpocket snuck up on them.” You want to avoid things like that if you write limited, but they are fair game in omniscient. You can also let the readers hear thoughts from several characters one after another. It can be a way of conveying how different people will interpret an event without having to go back to the event multiple times. It is also a way to give readers more information than the characters have.

Hmm, the book I'm writing doesn't fit with any of those 3 archetypal stories. It's sort of a "hero's journey", but the "hero" enjoys life at the beginning, until "forced" out on a quest as the hero sets out to help a child in need -- not a quest from a mentor. The protagonist also never returns home, because of [lots and lots of spoilers]. :P There are two "mentors", sort of, in the story, but they do not serve the function of most other stories. One is a wise confidant and moral support but is barely in the story, and the second is in the story a lot but doesn't serve as a classic "mentor", because they are on unknown territory, so to speak. That is, he knows everything except what they need to know, you could say. :P Still, it's a great story in my mind, anyway.

Would it ever be ok to split a limited narrators perspective, but only towards the end of the book? My protagonist more or less stays with their party for most of the book, but at the climax during the final battle type scene she needs to go off on her own to fulfill a promise and tie up her character arc with a moment of self sacrifice. While this is happening the two main companions are in the heat of the battle, both in really intense and interesting situations that tie up their character arcs, which are quite vital to the story in their own right. I think it would be unsatisfying for these sub plots to end “offscreen”, but it would be very contrived to somehow manufacture a way for my protagonist to be present in these moments. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I think it would be fine to switch to third person to express their scenes, maybe even third person with some elements of limited first, the only question is- would it ruin the tone or pacing? If not, go for it.

36:45 I get his point, but in the Name of The Wind, Kvothe is actually telling you honest, to goodness, what happened. Kvothe makes a point about being honest before telling the story, and he says/shows he's honest for the most part. It would have been better maybe if he made stuff up but then MC is a bit of a prat for it.

Peter Koin It really sounds like you’re saying “the narrator isn’t unreliable, he told me he was honest!” Kvothe *is* an unreliable narrator, we know that for sure. Bast calls him out on it saying something to the effect of “I haven’t said anything so far because I didn’t know any of this, but on this point you’re wrong”. What we don’t know is how much he is embellishing.

how do you differentiate between "3rd person omniscient" and "head hopping"? or are they the same and the criticism of "head hopping" ive heard are just useless
@piccolomaniac
@piccolomaniac 7 жыл бұрын
I think what's contraindicated is hopping between characters' heads too fast. Like if you're in a conversation between Alice and Bob, and every time Alice speaks, her thoughts and feelings are narrated, and every time Bob speaks, his are, and they switch back and forth. That would get confusing. I think what he's talking about with omniscient is something like this. Let's say we have a scene on a baseball field. Alice is playing first base, and we're inside her head as she makes one play. Then we kind of zoom out and describe the action more objectively, without saying anything about what any individual character is thinking. Maybe we describe it in a way that no actual person on the field would see it, but rather give a sort of bird's eye view of the game. After a while, we go over to Bob, the pitcher, and describe something from his perspective.

I feel like head hopping has distinctive switches in character view, like through chapter breaks, and only deals with the present. 3rd person omniscient would hop between thoughts constantly, and the narrator would now the future and the pasts of everyone. It's like in the Hobbit after they spend time with the eagles the narrator is like, "Oh, yeah, that eagle will be King of the Eagles someday and Gandalf won't meet him again until that happens." Head hopping, they wouldn't know that.
@MegatronTarantulas
@MegatronTarantulas 6 жыл бұрын
omniscient narrators know everything all the time. an example of this is hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy. head-hopping is when the story is in limited third and follows one character for the bulk of it (like harry potter, for example) if we had a scene where harry is arguing with snape and then the narration told us what snape was thinking (and harry wasn't using some kind of mind reading spell) then that would be head hopping. head hopping is accidentally going from limited third with one character to another because you weren't paying attention.
