I gave my son a 6/4 Miraphone tuba when he was 5. Even though the pt50 mouthpiece was half the size of his face.

I bought this based on your review, and love it. It makes a perfect practice horn, especially at night when I don’t want to disturb my condo neighbors. It allows me an extra practice a day without the sound a baritone can make. I’ve practiced at midnight without waking my family up.

Very helpful. As I"m teaching my daughter to play baritone, and I'm a trumpet player, I currently don't have sufficient funds for TWO baritones. This might be a viable option for me to use while she uses the real brass instrument. The price is right. I might order one next week.

Genuinely expected a joke and then it sounded ok.

I've owned a Nuvo jSax for about a year and a half, mostly for giggles (I've been a saxophonist for many years). It's definitely not a horn I would play serious music on, but the build is quality and the sound is more than bearable. The jSax in its normal state is curved and sized for a child, but a straightening kit can be bought separately to make the instrument comfortably usable for an adult, at the expense of making it look more like a clarinet. Nuvo is doing great things!

It reminds me of an Altohorn. I'm a generalist as far as music goes. I started with Cornet when I was in 3rd grade (American school system), added valve bugle for drum & bugle corps a year later, then switched to trumpet in Jr. High and got into marching band. I added french horn and baritone in high school, then tuba. I never learned trombone, though. I have played all sorts of interesting brass instruments, the aforementioned altohorn, euphonium, post horn, medieval krumhorn, and various different bugles including a valve baritone bugle. These days, due to a neck injury, I tend to play lighter weight instruments. I have a Tromba trumpet that I like a lot. The sound is perfectly adequate for my casual play. At 500 grams, I can hold it long enough to matter, where a brass instrument would be too heavy. I also noodle around with guitar, blues harmonica, tinwhistle, Japanese shakuhachi, Chinese xiao, a little violin (badly, it's too heavy), and most recently, after an experiment with a Xaphoon-like instrument called the Saxmonica, I ordered the JSax. It should be here tomorrow. I play a lot of instruments, but brass is my overall favorite. I'm liking the sound I can make on the saxmonica, so I'm looking forward to the JSax. If I can find a light enough full size sax, perhaps a plastic one, maybe I'll try it. Transverse flute is a bit difficult with my neck problems, but the shakuhachi is a good replacement. I've got access to keyboards, but I never learned. My sister got the piano lessons instead. UPDATE: I have both the JHorn and the JSax, and they are wonderful instruments, whether you're a kid just learning, or an adult who wants something low-maintenance and fun to play. Or if you're an adult learning a new instrument inexpensively. The JSax is serving that need for me, since I never played the saxophone before.

Thank you for further publicizing this! Ever since I met these wonderful people at the Midwest Clinic Ive been telling anyone that would listen about these instruments and this company. Another quick note that they told me while I was there, lots of teachers in elementary schools will keep these instruments and between classes clean them in a tub of bleach and water to disinfect and reuse them between different classes. Just a thought.

I'm very glad to see new footage from you, Trent! I hope your recovery goes well with a minimum of discomfort. The J Horn looks like it's well thought out for the purpose of introducing children to brass instruments. Could it serve for senior citizens who'd like to relearn to play a horn they haven't touched since high school?

I’m more of a sax player. But that thing looks PERFECT for a kid. I’m a teacher and it’s awe inspiring how kids can manage to destroy almost anything. Seems like a good starter.

I have one. I've just been waiting for a horn like this to come out! When I saw it and heard some sample playing, I was mystified and had to have one. It's fun and sounds good IF the player uses a small shank trombone/baritone mouthpiece. Else, for me anyway, each of the three mouthpieces included cover a very limited range. A cheap metal mouthpiece corrects that situation, though some tuning may be needed if playing ensemble because even the small shank barely fits. But otherwise, I am very happy with it as an old man trying to recapture school-days playing for a very low price ($129 on Ebay). I'm glad Trent doles out the praise for it - he is a musical snob, but we like him.

Could you do a longer demonstration ? The quality of sound and intonation of the instrument (considering its amazing price) is what I'm most interested in, because I want to use it as a travel instrument.

Ok so I now have a Jhorn, my first brass instrument. Ok its designed for kids and I'm....not a kid but you gotta start somewhere and decent brass instruments are eye wateringly expensive. 100 quid for what is effectively 3 instruments in one seems pretty good to me. Oh yea and people say its quiet. Well actually its louder than my clarinet. When played in the upstairs room its audible down here. But it is possible to get a cornet practice mute for the smallish bell.

I grew up playing the trumpet from 4th grade on. The idea of switching instruments was never even presented until I was in High school when we needed a French horn player for a song we were playing. I muddled my way through it because the music was in bass clef, and I both didn't know how to read it and didn't know the fingerings for the French horn. I wish I had been given a chance to apply my skills to other instruments earlier...

Hi Trent thanks a lot for the wonderful content that you share with us on your channel, i have a question to you, i have noticed that some old trumpets from the 40's or 50's doesn't have devices such as rings or triggers to operarate the 3th valve's tuning slide nor 1st valve's tuning slide, the trumpets i have seen with those characteristics range from begginer models to professional level models. Do you know whats the reason why they used to design trumpets like that. Thanks and sorry for muy english

I saw this prototype at tmea last year and thought it was very interesting. They had a functioning demo at namm. I think these are awesome instruments to start kids on at around the recorder age. I just hope that these don’t find their way up the food chain and 6th graders playing these.

How loud would 90 of these be in a horn arc?

Have you heard about the Finnish brass septet (seitsikko) from the 1870s? 1Eb cornet, 2Bb cornets, 1althorn, 1 tenor, 1baryton and a tuba.

Same with woodwind tbh, unless standard clarinet or flute. Trust me, I'd love to see a 5 year old play my contrabass clarinet

I played french horn for 8 years. This sounds like a good trainer to see if a kid has the pumps to actually learn how to play a French horn! Whole bunch of trumpet players by capacity quit band cuz they couldn't fill a French horn up. This would be ideal for that. If they can get a clean sound outta this device,it might be worth handin them a Horn! At under 140 bucks, yeah it might be a stretch for an individual to buy for a child,but a school could buy a buttload before handing a kid a 3 to 6 thousand dollar French horn!

Now a year has passed, I'm wondering if you still feel this way about these products and/or if you have seen much take-up of this range. Just as when you first uploaded this, I still strongly share your view of the benefits that an early exposure to instruments can bring, so anything that occupies the space to jiggle a child's musical interest can only be for the good. If they decide it's not for them then at least you've tried and, who knows, maybe they will return to our musical world later in life.

This is 10× better than the pbone mini which has the same target but: leaky bracing loud slide no resources (not to mention the little to no other resources online for alto bone in general) difficult in general and still, really big. Its also 20 less dollars. The jhorn is a passion project while the pbone mini is a markering strategy

If my parents had started me on the Jhorn I would have been teased and I’d have never played beyond a few very short lessons. I would have been too embarrassed to continue.

As someone who owns this thing, I suggest getting a conventional mouthpiece to use because the plastic and rubber combo is a bit odd and takes time getting used to. Plus the conventional mouthpieces sound much better
