This is the first time I've made a cast with brass. The result is not bad but melting brass is a pain so I probably won't use it too often. I definitely don't see being able to use it for ant colonies since it takes so long to melt even a small amount. Also, the higher temperature causes it to react far more violently when it hits water than aluminum.
I believe this is a bolete mushroom. A few of these were in the yard and this was the best one. I don't know the exact type of mushroom this is. I don't see these very often and haven't since. If you know, tell me in the comments section.
See the cast page for more info and pictures: www.anthillart.com/castings/095
If you haven't seen my other mushroom cast videos that are annotated, here's a few answers to frequently asked questions:
-The white liquid is plaster
-The mushroom inside the plaster is removed before the brass is poured in
That's all that I can think of right now. I'll add more if I think of anything else.

Nice videos, but mostly looking forward to ant hills lol. Have you considered doing a cast piece with high luster? Even that casting, with simple features seems rough. Sandpaper, time, patience... And a buffing wheel.

Thanks. I generally want to preserve the natural texture of it while removing crud and polishing so I don't want to grind on these. That's conveniently the easiest way to do it too. It would be cool to put a high polish on one and I may try it sometime.I do tap these mushroom casts to mount them. I was just thinking it might be cool to show that step too.

I find your works really astonishing and I would like to suggest something that you could probably try in the future. Whenever you're going to do an ant colony casting I would like for you try pouring in epoxy resin with a little mix of color in them. It would look really cool especially if you put LED lights in the middle and light up the whole tunnels of the colony! :)

Do your techniques allow for the casting of bigger mushrooms; is there a size limit? And are you able to cast mushrooms that grow on the side of trees?
@AnthillArt
@AnthillArt 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply. I haven't seen a mushroom in my area that's too big to cast but people have sent me pictures of giant mushrooms asking for advice on casting. Probably any size could be done this way but I'd say the larger they are the more of a chance it won't work out. Off the top of my head, you'd need a larger oven to dry the plaster and it would probably take a long time to do so with a really large mold. Long dry time might weaken the plaster. Not drying it enough could cause steam to bubble through the aluminum and mess it up (also, there's a danger of steam blowing aluminum on you). But really though, if you've seen my mushroom casting videos, you may have noticed that I haven't got this down to a perfect science yet and often get lots of steam and cracking but still come out with pretty good casts.
