It was quite a surprise to see a diminutive 57xx pannier tank hard at work recently on a regular Dartmouth Steam Railway roster. Drafted in from the Tyseley Collection as emergency cover this eager little engine immediately won the hearts of crews and passengers alike to such an extent that it earned a place on regular workings. Here is a short set of clips showing the climb from the River Dart to Churston, much of it at 1 in 60, including an astonishingly sure-footed start out of Greenway Halt considering the 280 ton load, the slippery conditions and the twisty nature of the track. Note how the loco rocks with the effort (approximately 60% of maximum tractive effort) applied by the two inside cylinders, no wonder she has been so popular.

That was some serious grunt from Greenway halt, never seen an inside cylinder loco rocking so much. The Pannier is surely a locomotive which delivers more than it says on the tin!

Excellent video, a lot of work for a little pannier to move seven coaches from a standstill. Photographically the length of the zoom lens on the camera during the second sequence is amazing.

Ah... reminiscing here about what I DID miss when younger, and DO miss now that I'm older. Many thanks from a Paignton boy now living on an island off the west coast of Canada. Sure, I've snow-covered mountains in front of me, and fir forests all around, but, boy, do I ever miss those soft rolling hills and coombes of South Devon! I recall the SD rail service just starting up (the kids off to Churston Grammar by train). I miss the sight of steam locos over Brunel's viaducts or beside the Dart estuary. Your video of the 'Brave tank' touched me - especially as it arrives in Churston. And yet sadly I have only been on that train once, and I doubt if I ever shall do so again. Your videos give me joy and inspiration... because I am making, in N-scale, an 'active diorama' of Churston in the era when one could change for Brixham, . Just constructing what was The White House (it's now White Horse, I think), and the old stone road bridge takes my mind back many years, although I don't actually recall the trains running to Brixham. Daunted by not being able to find a 14xx and autocoach set, I had to settle for a BR 5764 model. OK, so you purists are going to tell me she didn't run from Churston to Brixham (or even south of Exeter), but i doubt anyone here will know that. So the video reassures me that I can run a pannier from Dartmouth after all to add some variety to my rather limiting station scene. Thanks, friend, for preserving the action on the rail lines for kids and grand-kids who might never otherwise see a steam loco in action...

Hello and thank you for your very kind comments and wonderful memories. I have been unable to respond to any comments for the last 4 weeks, so apologies for my apparent silence. I too am a "Pudd'n Eater" and we must be fairly contemporary therefore we have much in common as well as our love of steam and railways. As a child I sometimes travelled on the footplate of the "Brixham Whippet" because the crew were family friends. No. 1420 (allocated to Exeter in 1959) now lives at Buckfastleigh on the SDR. My grandfather was the plate-layer that looked after the track between Goodrington and Churston and he was allowed to walk the line until well after retirement. I am so glad that my video is an inspiration for your current project and I wish you joy and success as you progress. Very best regards, Alan

Would that be a Merchant Navy class? I'm not up on UK rail terminology. I shall be doing a presentation next month with my diorama for the local (Canadian) model RR club, and have sussed out things like 'toad' ' bloater', etc., so am having fun trying to learn new terms to tell them. No, I am not expecting a discourse... just answers to those two Q's would be appreciated, thankyou. Keep up the great work...

Great shots... loved that power out of Greenway Halt up such a steep grade!!!! That pronounced waddling reminds me of riding on the YP metre gauge engines in India (I lived there for quite a while) starting a big heavy rake of carriages on expresses in Rajasthan!!!!!! Each stroke of the piston and it felt like you were heading off 45 degrees in that direction!!! Well, something a bit like that anyway :-)

Am I the only one who recalls these gutsy engines pulling long rakes of ecs into Paddington? 12 or 13 coaches and having to surmount the flyover near Old Oak too.

Hello William. Sorry for the late resonse, I have been off-line for 4 weeks. The pannier is probably one of the most underestimated locos in preservation other than by the crews who actually drive them and for a pre-Churchward design to have survived up to the end of steam and beyond is remarkable. Apparently you can order a "new" one as all parts have patterns that have been re-manufactured in the preservation era! Kind regards, Alan

I wouldn't call that a stroll. It was giving very nearly its all and was pretty impressive. The gradient here is 1 in 75, BTW, but 1 in 66 up to the tunnel. Notice how there is a little hiccup at 2:00 as the driver shifts the gear from full to (guess) 45 - 50% and has to close the regulator to do so. The advantage of a pannier is that it is light (47 tons) whereas a Castle, say, and its tender weigh 80 tons more, the equivalent of nearly 3 coaches. Thus a pannier could get this load up Hemerdon. It would need pressure well up and 55-60% cut-off and it wouldn't be quick - 8 mph is a reasonable figure and would need good driving and firing but there's no doubt it could do it These engines are monsters!

(JG) I wouldn't disagree with that. :-) The man clearly knows how to drive a pannier. In my (lost) Ian Allan ABC of about 1953 there are 25 consecutive locos of this class underlined in scarlet biro, rather a novelty in those days. The locos were nos. 8750 to 8774, all at 81A and used to shift empty stock in and out of Paddington. They were the first batch of 523 identical locos with the improved cab. I rather like them despite their essential crudity. They are basically very sound. Please excuse a bit of nostalgia.

To think this loco was a regular sight and sound on the sub surface lines of the underground in the sixties , ghostly going’s on during the night as she barked her way through the tunnels of the met and district lines via Lillie bridge and Neasden and on to barking . Panniers were like a black five . Go anywhere with one .

At 1:58 notice that the regulator is shut to allow the driver to shift the reverser. With the regulator open and friction from the slide valves the lever is liable to flap all over the place and injure the driver unless fixed. Excellent video BTW.

She's a gallant little Pannier Tank Engine. No wonder she's loved by all who admire her. You should create a story to go with the video. It would win the hearts of millions far and wide. Hello Alan - My grandfather told me that, early on during the war, a German plane dropped a bomb at the train as it emerged from the tunnel... it missed, but formed a crater. The farmer charged half-a-crown per carload to see it. Had you heard of this?

Hi Peter, I have not heard of this particular episode but with the Philip & Son boatyard nearby it would not surprise me as there where numerous raids, most devastating of which was on 18 Sept. 1942, resulting in the deaths of many boatyard workers and a great deal of destruction. Apparently a train carrying Eisenhower, who came to inspect American troops preparing for D-Day in the South Hams, was parked in the tunnel for security! Alan

Are the second and third coaches taken from a 4VEP set?

Hello Ron: sorry for the delay in answering your question. It is quite possible that the origin of the second and third coaches are from multiple units. The Dartmouth Steam Railway, as they are currently named, tend to think of practicality rather than authenticity and therefore reliable used stock is sourced from pretty well anywhere, painted chocolate & cream and even named (Pullman style)! You obviously remember the original version of that story, namely "Duck and the Diesel Engine", as published in 1958; I prefer it to the book published in conjunction with the TV series. The front cover illustration of the original book is priceless; the snooty expression on Diesel's face! And the original also features "City of Truro" !

You are quite right Eren. A number of these ex GWR 57xx pannier tanks were sold to London Transport, re-numbered Lxx and re-painted in LT livery when BR Western Region abandoned steam in favour of diesel traction in 1963. Regards, Alan
