Braveheart being historically inaccurate doesn’t devalue it as a cinematic triumph. The movie’s a historical fantasy and not meant to depict facts; Mel Gibson and Randall Wallace have made that perfectly clear. Just sit back and enjoy the story, characters, soundtrack and cinematography. 😉

So nice to see Alan Ladd Jr. get a well deserved Oscar to highlight his amazing career in film producing/leading studios. After seeing Braveheart when it was released in Glasgow, Scotland, it inspired me to seek out books from the local library (pre-internet) and read up on my Scottish history. I learned so much. We were never really taught our Scottish history in school, save for a spider and an obscure Scottish king (Bruce) and scant few other morsels from our past. Why weren't we taught any Scottish history in school? for fear of what's taking place today in Scotland today - an awakening. London were afraid of the consequences of Scots learning about their history, their culture, their land, their heroes. Supressing and distorting information - what they do - meant they could cow us, rule us, disrespect us and rob us. The burgeoning of information from the internet has caused a stirring in Scotland, a desire to want what every nation on the planet desires; simply to govern itself. Let's start by Googling 'The Scottish Enlightenment' and quoting Voltaire: "It is to Scotland that we must look for our idea of civilisation." What happened to that Scotland? Nothing happened to it, except it was hidden, intentionally, expertly by the avaristic and bellligerent Westminster crew. No more. We have no quarrel with our English neighbours, a popular myth put-about by those threatened by the inevitability of Scottish independence, instead, we welcome everyone, every nationality, every race and every religion. Is it so wrong to want self-determination? Of course not, it's the most natural thing in the world. Welcome, everyone, to our wonderful country.

And I 100% agree with Mr. Ebert - Rest in peace. No doubt it was the movie that should've gotten Ron Howard his Oscar, and not "A Beautiful Mind" even though that movie was pretty good as well. At 2:11, when "Babe" is mentioned as one of the nominees, you can see George Miller (the film's producer) in the audience, and director Chris Noonan seated in front of him. How telling that they were not seated side-by-side. They had a bitter falling-out during the production, and Noonan accused Miller of trying to take all credit for the movie's success. That's why Miller directed the sequel himself instead of Noonan.

That movie was a great film in a great year; totally deserved it. I wished the Academy had that expanded Best Picture system back than, I would’ve loved to see The Usual Suspects, Dead Man Walking, Leaving Las Vegas, and Toy Story nominated.

LMAO! I thought Sidney Poitier was doing the moonwalk at 0:29. I had to play it a few times to make sure. :D

That was a great film. It deserved to clean up the Oscars in everything. Cinematography, musical score, best actor, best set and costume design, EVERYTHING! .......HOLLYWOOD SOMETIMES BLOWS MY MIND IN HOW MUCH THEY OVERLOOK. And while I am at it I'll say this ..Mel Gibson has been one of the most underrated actors and directors Hollywood has ever had. The guy is a bloody genius, so so talented. Maybe Mel would have got the recognition he deserved if had been buddies with Martin Scorsese. I won't say any more than that.

One of my favorite Best Picture winners, alongside Forrest Gump, The Artist, The Sound of Music, Titanic, Ben-Hur, The Godfather and Casablanca. If I have to list which is my most favorite or #1, I would say Braveheart!
