Sony may have designed it in-house but a contract panel manufacturer is producing it which means partners are required and fees must be negotiated - I don’t believe Sony is willing to pay for the entire cost of tooling for such a small production run. It’s like when LG cross licensed acoustic surface glass with Sony for exclusivity initially

@@stopthefomo No you are wrong and this should be reported as false information. The backlight system is completely separate from AUO and TCL etc. Sony has literally made circuit boards for decades, they have a semi-conductor in house development. They make Photography sensors, IC chips and all kinds of things. But you think they cant make one large backlight circuit board with Mini-LEDs and IC Drivers on it. The circuit boards with the XR processor etc is built by Sony. They put together and build the Sony Playstation for crying out loud. They designed the whole internal system by Sony engineers. Even if there is some plant mass producing it. It's completely beside the point. The way you speak is as though another company is involved in designing and making it.

TCL is making Panasonic's miniLCDs. So kind of win win. You get panasonic /sony processing with maybe some extra heavy duty support in TV . TCL uses their production knowledge to do their own. Sony and Panasonic small players in the market. miniLCD , OLEDs, QDOLEDS only make up say 5% of total market. LCD still reign supreme. Japonese companies need to offload capital investment, given volatile markets going forward. Think BOE also make screens for other big players.

We need a non-organic, self-emissive TV in normal sizes. Micro-LED was one of the pathways. Since it's all but dead, perhaps QNED or something else will come. OLED will always be organic and Mini-LED will never be self-emissive.

I saw the Bravia 9 at BB. It is the best looking LED to be released. Above it was a Bravia 8. I preferred the image and viewing angles of the Bravia 8. I'll have to take another look but I still prefer OLED/QD OLED but it is definitely compelling for those that may not like OLED/scared of image retention or burn in. Im sensitive to ANY blooming and dont like the image washing out at an angle so the B9 wouldnt be for me. I have 3 WOLEDs/1 QD OLED and they are never at max brightness because I find them to be super bright, i cant imagine the B9 at home!

I have never had a 7 year old tv look this good. No burn in, has some slight image retention, but that series was known to have imagine retention. the newer models are much better. @@user-oq6sc1qm4j good point. I think this is more for the higher end models. where you don't want to drop $6k on a tv today, calculate in opportunity cost, and a lease is a smart move. Many years ago in the 70's (Yes i am that old !) most TV's were rented. When the first colour sets arrived they were way too expensive for most people to buy, so they rented, this ensured that when not if the tv failed it would be repaired or replaced with a newer model free of charge. With the crazy prices of todays must have very large expensive models then leasing one makes a lot of sense. Plus as predicted the panel tech will be way better in a few years time making paying thousands for one now a waste of money.

They can outsource building/assembling their backlight panel to ANY factory out there that does custom jobs. All they need are the specifications. You know shockingly little about things you talk about. It's a circuit board and it has miniLEDs on it and IC drivers. That's about it. They would have 65/75/85 specification of size and it's designed in house and they start with making prototypes and they developed the IC driver in-house via their Sony Semiconductor solutions group. Just another thing you clearly didn't know. But they said it loud and proud over and over again. I guess you didn't listen. You see something from TCL, I saw that 6 months ago BTW so good job being WAY late to the party. These TCL demos existed a long time. Just because they are similar doesn't mean TCL makes Sony backlight panels. That would be asinine to think. This is literally THE standout difference for Sony and you think they would hand it to TCL? Or that TCL invented and made it. Shame.... Who do you think makes the MILLIONS of Playstation 1,2,3,4 and 5 consoles? TCL? Sony designs them and whether they have their own assembly factories or outsource them doesn't matter. They design and built the prototype templates with all the custom parts that go with it. AMD supplies the SoC but even that one is custom built and changed according to what Sony wants. Sony makes Camera sensors and tons of IC chips. They made computer laptops. They have expertise in circuit boards going back decades. They even have their own plants. Don't make videos and frame them as some discovery and pass it off as some truth when you clearly haven't even researched anything about it. You see some OLD video that TCL has demonstrated tons of times before about THEIR backlight version and because it looks similar You go and make an insane claim that TCL makes these for Sony. What the hell. Fomo DO BETTER... This backlight is Sony In-house developed including the IC drivers which is THE LITERAL reason they said they NOW can make these backlight panels and increase the Zone counts. Were you sleeping when they presented this news.

OLED will never be as robust and bright at very high full-field brghtness for day-time viewing and LED will never have that "star field impact", 3D-depth and gaming responsetimes which we love (except the EU looks away for the dual-cell energy consumption). I hoped, maybe in a year I replace my 65" C7 with the B9 in 85" for 4k€, and my next TV in another 6-9 years could be an 130" uLED for ~5-6k€ (which then should last 10 year or so)... so it looks like, that's not gonna happen ;(...

Why would Sony allow TCL to have access to the LITERAL thing that makes Sony TV standout from TCL? Please just STOP.... It's painful. TCL DOES NOT GIVE SONY AN EXCLUSIVE RIGHT. It is SONY's OWN development and design and patent FOR CRYING OUT LOUD.... STOP it!!!!!! Sony developed the IC driver , IC stands for "Integrated Circuit" since you don't seem to know what it is or who made it. Sony made it and it's very tiny. It's all just on a large plastic circuit board designed IN HOUSE with MiniLEDs in the thousands and many of these IC drivers. Any factory can make it for Sony. They get handed custom specs and say can you make this for us. Sony likely does that in house as well. Did you forget Sony makes Playstation. That they make Cameras? They literally develop sensors and IC chips. But it would be too hard and expensive for Sony to assemble a plastic circuit board with their own IC drivers? What's next are you saying TCL is also literally making the Bravia 9 TV? The cabinet, the plastic, the housing and ALL of it. Of course not. So who does that FOMO? Who builds these TVs? It's Sony and their factories or 3rd party factories that assemble it. THAT is how they have their own backlight. The LCD panels is a TOTALLY separate panel that gets sandwiched in front of the backlight. There are other layers as well as quantum dot film and polarizers. 22bit backlight adjustment is just marketing bs.. even 8bit (256 levels) in backlight is enough as top of that there is 10bit lcd levels (for each r,g,b) Zone level backlight control are not a new thing, they have never been on/off type... sure some are bit laggy (soc level thing..) but still.. sure Sony did good job but it is not a new idea. It is just incredible that reviewers fall into simple marketing bs... next year, 100bit backlight control!!!??
@Swecan76
@Swecan76 Ай бұрын
Wrong. 8-bit is not enough. It's 10 bit LCD panel and 12-bit PWM. It's processing for speed and various light level gradients with thousands of miniLEDs in thousands of zones. There is a reason TCL with their 6-bit PWM and 10-Bit LCD doesn't have the same gradient levels of light. They use more zones instead. Sony uses the "LIGHT" so to speak. They dim it in lets for example say 100 stages. The TCL does it in 10 stages. It's different solutions. LCD panels have crystals that let light through or block it. It works in tandem with the backlight. Technically the light could be 100% on at all times. Which is how it used to work and the LCD crystals do the rest. But that is Native contrast and hence not very good, light leakage happens a lot. Zones helps with that by turning OFF the light in large areas. Now with MiniLED they not only turn on and off areas. They also do different light levels. Smaller zones, numerous levels of light from off to very little to full blast. This creates this sort of image in the backlight itself hence with the tandem of the LCD crystals create a much better contrast, and black level. 8 bit only allows for a certain amount of operations. Higher bit allows for more. This is why TCL has less gradient light levels and focus more on "brute force" of MORE zones. But they lose the fine tuning.
