i think people who don't play instruments don't understand how athletic this actually is. usually with wind instruments you put all your breath into playing, they're dancing while still playing, and also without sheet music, they had to memorise everything. this is really, really impressive.

I've been in a school corps/band, our school has not attempted dancing while marching, so by the sight of this I'm just really impressed. I'm just woahh that must have taken a lot of practising. as a former clarinet player I can for sure say that they're way better.

114th class section leader Comare is a powerhouse. Because there were no percussionists in 113th class, Comare has the unique distinction of being in charge of drums in both her second and third years. (For a short time at the start of school year, before 115th percussionists were trained up, it was only Comare and Chippi.) As section leader, she guided woodwind, brass, and percussion. Although her easy confidence and solid performances don't show it, she has stated in interviews that she felt a large gap between her own skills and that of her 112th class senpai. And she felt the weight of responsibility upon her. Chippi may be more well known for her exuberance, but Comare deserves a lot of respect for maintaining the quality of the percussion section.

What you see here is due to Japanese family and school culture. Learning a musical instrumental has been a popular early childhood activity that Japanese parents provide their children. Chippi, the xylophone player, for example, has played piano singe age 3. As for school, all Japanese children participate in an after-school club activity of their choosing from elementary school through high school. Popular club activities are baseball, volleyball, calligraphy, and marching band. Although KT SHS has garnered a lot of international fame, most Japanese junior and senior high schools field very respectable bands. Matsue CHS, Seika GHS, Mito GHS, Toho, Waseda Setsuryo, and Izumo BHS are just a few that you can find on YT.

@@bellesogne It's the same with sports like football (soccer) in Europe and Latin America ^^ It's very common for kids to play football on the street from the moment they can walk and join a football club when they're age 5-8 something, and as a result most world class players are from these cultures

I'm sure they all had prior experience. I was in high school marching band (small town USA), and all of us started playing in the concert band in 5th grade (~10 years old) and started marching in 7th grade. That was an hour-long route that they had not prepared for because the parade route changed at the last minute. So they had to perform their normal 22-25 minute set roughly three times in succession. While 2018 Rose was longer in duration, the Marching Composition Staff had arranged their set to account for the duration, interspersing low intensity musical pieces in between their signature numbers.

For me, the limit for KZfaq video length is 8 to 9 minutes. I tend to skip videos that are longer than that. When KZfaq recommended this video to me, it was 27 minutes long, so I watched it thinking that I would probably end up skipping along again, but the result was completely different. Surprisingly, I didn't miss a single second of the entire 27 minutes and watched it in no time. I've watched it over and over again since then. There are many other videos of this band on KZfaq, some of which are over an hour long. I end up watching all of those videos on a daily basis without getting tired of them. An incredible band with great charm.

i think it's the educational values in Japan, honestly. education is *everything* there, and because of that, discipline and adaptability are skills that are required to succeed. you also have to be driven, and they instill these values into their students at a very young age. in America, there's a frighteningly large amount of students who put in minimal effort, and some students just stop altogether, or even worse they just drop out. there's also a lack of respect and discipline in American education. I'm sure American children could have very promising results as well but they're lacking all of those things and lacking good instructors as well

I hear that the students in charge of the club carry out the selection of songs to be played, the composition of the songs, and the choreography of the dances. The music adviser teacher will help them with the arrangement of the songs they play. It's surprising that students can do so much in regular high school after-school club activities.

It's important to understand this a high school that specializes in music and the reason kids go to that school is to join the marching band. There really isn't any equivalent in the United States. Major cities in the US will have music and art-focused high schools, but those schools focus on concert music and rarely, if at all, do any marching band work. Marching bands in the US are much more local and only practice during fall for football season. To show my point I'll explain what the US would have to do to match this high school. You would take a similar population area such as Minneapolis-St Paul and form a marching band out of all the best players in the metropolitan area. Those players would then spend multiple hours each day practicing for marching band all year long. That is what it would take to match this band. The US doesn't see this kind of filtering and dedication to practice until a person gets to College or if they perform in Drum Corps International (DCI). Even then, Colleges and DCI only practice marching band on a seasonal basis, so a Japanese High School would practice more than the top marching bands in the US.

If they break the required school hours just for them to practice the band, an Education Association will surely sent them something special.
@BulletRain100
@BulletRain100 Ай бұрын
@@Akiyeok I'm not missing anything. I've already factored everything you've said. An American high schooler will only practice marching band 3 months a year, while Japanese high schoolers in schools that focus on it will practice around 9 months a year. They will also more likely practice more per day than what you'll find in the US. Japan has a culture of significant dedication towards clubs in schools and the specialization in one thing. You can see this at it's most extreme in baseball where students spend an insane amount of time practicing all year, especially at schools who focus on baseball. This high school does something similar for marching band and there is nothing comparable in the US. Major metropolitan areas like New York City will have a music high school, but they will focus almost exclusively on concert music. It's telling you need to get to the collegiate or professional level to match the dedication for marching band found in specific high schools in Japan.

As a trombonist, I just have to say what an amazing group of young musicians! The trombone secton is just flabbergasting. Just think of the physics of the instrument - to be played successfully you're continuously moving your right arm at least 1 - 2 feet. This all affects the way the horn sits on the mouth (embouchure) which makes playing consistently in tune, balance, and blending of the sound, etc - Think of trying to drink a glass of water while walking/dancing in a structured way, without spilling anything. And musically, I'll just say that if I heard them playing without seeing them dancing, I never in a million years would imagine that they were moving like that while sounding like that!

Even some of our elite high school marching bands such as Carmel, Avon, and Broken Arrow just to name a few are very impressive as well. But then I discovered the Kyoto Tachibana Senior High School Marching Band a few years ago and they just totally blew my mind away. They are the absolute complete total package. I am just so happy I found them and it seems like they are finally getting the recognition that they deserve.

chfunnyone1, All drum corps are marching bands but not all marching bands are drum corps...and that’s not my definition. It’s DCI’s definition itself. But that’s besides the point. Instead of insulting my intelligence, why don’t you show me or direct me to something that wows me like Tachibana, something that I’ve never seen before. I think KZfaq is a great platform for that. I’ve been to many marching band shows in my life, including those big ones in Indianapolis and I’ve spent a lot of time in KZfaq searching for great marching bands and none even comes close to wowing me than Tachibana.

You know Downey one of the band directors of the Blue Devils was one of the ones who directed this band and taught them to play their instruments while dancing. He made every show my band played when I was in high school and told us about this band and how they had to stop going to competitions because they were so good non of the other hand would get anything or win anything

I play the drums in an Austrian 🇦🇹 brass band. If only the drums play when the band is marching we call it a „Fußmarsch“ it’s pretty basic with the bass drum playing almost only on each even beat. I have never heard anything like this part at 1:48 it’s just so insanely awesome, the complexity of the rhythm, the bass drum playing 16th notes, the triads.. I just can’t stop listening to this part. Also the girl on the xylophone is God tier. Much love to Japan ❤ 🇯🇵

@@TheYoungik I've been a part of a marching band as well when i was in HS and I've lived my youth to the fullest as i can. My experienced is nothing compared to this level cuz students in our school thinks that joining a marching band was just a chore and our school is low on budget at that times. so- rip.. My point is, its all about *where* you can be freely to do as much as anything you want... without having any hassles and interuptions but ppl in different countries act so differently in these kinds of events. Thats why people like us are having a hard time to commit on it and cooperate because of any other circumstances around us making it so difficult to achieve something this greater. I saw their video playing disney songs somewhere in California(i think its in one a disney park) is one of the greatest thing i've ever seen. Their smiles shows the outcome of their hardwork, it made me shed a tear for a lil bit (goddamn onion cutting ninjas). Reminds me of that time seeing all the people came out of from their houses just to see us playing our band playa instrument parading outside the streets of the philippines, under the heat and bathing sweat. For me, just by seeing their joy, relieves my thirst and exhaustion. It makes me pound my snare drum louder and clearer. anyways.. maybe try saying and apply it to yourself first, instead of you just sitting here, commenting stupid shit" lmao

@@Vannilla I wouldn't say that Japanese highschool kids are any more or less committed to things on average than American students. The thing with Japan (and Asia in general as far as I can tell) is that the have no problem separating their students, with the most talented students attending top schools dedicated to that particular subject. Doing a little bit of googling, Tachibana is a private school that is tied in with Tachibana university, so my guess is these are all the top musicians skimmed off all the local high schools.

I don't know them at all, but when I watch marching band videos to Japanese elementary and junior high school students, they probably play with toy instruments in kindergarten and join the marching band in elementary school. The only thing they learn in this school is dancing. Then they match the choreography to the marching in practice.

At that time, KT SHS practiced 5-6 hours every Mon-Sat (1 hour before classes, 1 "optional" hour at lunch, 4 hours after class), and 8 hours Sunday. They had 3 days off in August for Obon. Otherwise, they were either practicing, performing, or traveling to a performance. Japan has now placed some restrictions on the amount of time students spend on a club activity (this is a club activity, not a class). However, even with the restrictions, today's KT SHS still devotes a lot of time to training.

And you damn well better yell "Hai!!!" with exuberance and energy after every direction from the DM, club president, VP, or section leaders.
