Brazed Gear repair

Thought I'd give this little project a shot since I was stuck between a rock and a hard place. This little Pinion gear broke on my track torch, so I decided to try and see if brazing it would be a good solution to the problem. Didnt have much to lose since it was already broken. Follow along to see how it got fixed. I used some carbon rods to hold the things in place and I even threaded a piece of carbon to mimic the thread pattern so as to make it easier to help save some of the original threads on the set screw.

Nothing warms my heart than seeing a fellow brown brother like me succeeding in life all the while listening to that familiar accent I used to hear on the rez. God bless you brother and the work of your hands.

I went to this welding shop back in the 1980's and the owner was not there but his father was there, told him I has some brass twist chain and a couple of worn eyes and links. He said it had been sometime, he gave it a try a brazed the worn links to normal and the eyes to normal. He started out welding with oxy/acetylene before there were electrodes for arc welding. He was about 77 at the time, charged 15 bucks for the work. I was totally humbled by that old man and me just barely 20 yrs old.

"It's already broke, right? Can't get any worse." You clearly have not seen my repair jobs. By the time I had that gear working again I'd need help from a carpenter, a plumber, and a priest to fix all of the collateral damage.

Well, I've used copper tubes to keep holes around welded steel, but I've never thought to use carbon to keep holes around brazing. I always learn something new, watching your videos - thanks for taking the time to make them. I'm relatively new to your channel, but yours have become one of my favorite places to go to on KZfaq.

I love watching a master at his trade. I have not welded anything in my life but have always been fascinated by the process. Now at 81 years old it is a little late to learn, ha. I am a retired fire chief and there just wasn't time to get into welding which would have just been a hobby as I had other interests. Still I find it amazing to watch you as you not only do the repairs but figure out how to set the job up. Thanks for making the videos.

Great idea with the rods! The braze won't stick and won't soak up the heat either. I do commercial HVAC and braze all the time. Dissimilar metals too. The only thing I would have done different is a smaller tip. That's definitely some precision brazing there. Also, it's hard sometimes when you're really concentrating to not stop the torch when you're trying to add rod! Lol Great job as always and keep up the humor, makes the day go by!

I think you and I would get alone very well. I bought my first pickup 51 years ago when I was 12 and it didn't make the 10 mile trip home. I been fixing things ever since. I once welded a wheel flange back on the axel of a Franklin skidder. I don't know how long it lasted but the man never did tell me it broke again. I remember driving off watching that big tire wobble though the woods thinking that'll never last.

I love little jobs like these... so satisfying to repair your own stuff and get the job done... order a new gear of course... but run the old one until it quits! You might have been able to drill the other side and tap from there, just braze over the old hole.

Chamfering one of the edges of the 2 pieces would have made full mechanical bond more likely. If there was outside clearance I would have built up brass double thick and left it for strength on the outside of the shaft. Adding a steel nut brazed on top of the old setscrew hole , brazing full, drilling oversize and retapping would have been another option. Beautiful torch work. Great control. The carbon rods used as cores was brilliant. Having a sharp file of the correct profile in your toolbox is a matter of luck on a job like that.

First, let me say that I'm a big fan of your channel! But, for future reference when brazing, the brass will flow to the flux. When you sprinkled the flux on the gear teeth I knew you might have an issue in post-production removing the braze. I mean, obviously no biggy, you were able to remove it with that wedge file. Oh, and I hate to see someone using a file like a saw... Push it into the work, then relax the pressure or even lift the file on the backstroke. Your file will last longer and you won't have to clean it as often. Just a thought.

Well if you did it wrong then it makes two of us that have had that luck. It is such a fine line between all melts or welds and its a feeling more than sight of been there and seen how it is such a thin line between too hot and not quite. Kinda if your eye sees it move then take the heat off. and don't think about it. Nice work
