And the president is part of the problem.
This is Part 3 of Vox Atlas: The Amazon, a three-part series about the world's largest rainforest, why it's in jeopardy, and the people trying to save it. Watch all three parts right here on KZfaq.
Part 1: • The destruction of the...
Part 2: • The war for the Amazon...
Brazil has over 900,000 indigenous people, most of whom live in the Amazon. After centuries of persecution, they were given extensive rights under a new Constitution in the 1980s, including the right to claim and win back their traditional lands. Since then, hundreds of indigenous lands have been demarcated and protected by the Brazilian government.
But in the last few years, those lands have come under attack by landowners, ranchers, loggers, and farmers who want access to the resources inside these indigenous lands. And since Jair Bolsonaro became president, the number of invasions into indigenous lands has skyrocketed.

The Constitution of 1988 recognizes the Indigenous peoples as the first and natural owners of the land and guarantees them their right to land. Across Brazil, illegal logging, mining, poaching, and land grabbing in Indigenous lands increased by 137 percent in 2020, compared with 2018, the year before President Bolsonaro took office, according to the latest data by the Indigenist Missionary Council, a nonprofit organization. 0:45 [Human Rights Watch; IWGIA]

@@ghhhhhhhhhh I'd recommend you watch CGP Grey's videos on domestication. The Americas were underdeveloped not because of an intellectual barricade but simply because of their region. As you can tell, the most domesticated animal in the continent were the llamas, which didn't really serve a big purpose. They were blocked by the simple fact that they couldn't find any good animal to domesticate as the Europeans did. To act like they're intellectually inferior because of something out of their control is laughable.

Yup. It will lead to farmers starting to just shoot unarmed indigenous people. So the next tribe will decide to arm themselves and fight back. And once a handful of tribes take that tactic, Bolsonaro will declare them a threat and move the army in to finish the job, assuming he's still in power by that point. I of course can't predict how his successor will act if he's removed, so all bets are off in that case. But from his words, he doesn't sound like he's doing this just for the profit. He sounds very much like he would prefer a genocide to "accidentally" occur. Horrible excuse for a human being.

The Brazilian constitution recognizes the rights of indigenous people to live in their traditional territories according to their lifestyle. It also states that the government is responsible for the demarcation of indigenous land and is in charge of providing bilingual education and health care adapted to indigenous needs and beliefs. There are about 305 tribes living in Brazil today, totaling around 900,000 people, or 0.4% of Brazil’s population. The largest tribe today is the Guarani, numbering 51,000, but they have very little land left. During the past 100 years almost all their land has been stolen from them and turned into vast, dry networks of cattle ranches, soya fields and sugar cane plantations. Survival International Kayapó call themselves Mebengokre, which means "people of the wellspring". 1:30 [Atlas Org; Survival International; WWF]

@@Boristien405 This is a result of unregulated capitalism. Capitalism is the system under which these people operate. If they werent so greed-fueled and driven by profit, as per a capitalistic economic system, they wouldn't go to illegal lengths to secure more land. You're right though, it's so useless to just blame it on capitalism. It IS the result of government corruption, but again, a liberal society would argue against government interference in these matters. It's ironic how authoritarian Bolsonaro is in so many areas of government, but when it comes to the indigenous people or the rainforest, he's suddenly against government intervention

I'm Brazilian. I can confirm that the fact our economy is highly based on agricultural land is cultural, since the times when we were a colony, as well as the rejection and genocide of indigenous peoples. By the apex of our culture and economy, during the reign of D. Pedro II, he tried to change that, by slowly decreasing slavery until it was abolished (Brazil was the last country in the world to do so, making evident the origin of many of our current social problems), also by modernizing and industrializing the country. That was mostly lost after our "Proclamation" of the Republic, which was favorable to slavery and militarily leaded. Sad but true :/ Btw we don't speak spanish.
