Given your fascination with presidents’ personalities and personal lives and how they shape their presidencies, I think you would love to get into Getúlio Vargas’ life and political trajectory. @@AndreDutraTV my two favorites are “Getúlio Vargas, Meu Pai,” by Alzira Vargas, and “Getúlio, Uma História Oral” by Valentina da Rocha Lima. The first one was written by his daughter Alzira. It gives insight into some of the main events during Getúlio’s presidencies, I really like it because it is written by someone who was not only Getúlio’s daughter but his chief of staff. She goes into detail about his rationale behind why he did what he did. The second book is more of a timeline through Brazilian history starting at the beginning of the First Republic (1889) through the Vargas Era (1930-1954). It talks about Getúlio’s early life and how it fit into the larger context of Brazilian life and society at the time. It also has a bunch of interesting primary documents from when he was president. P.S. I would also recommend a video by Brasil Paralelo here on KZfaq, called “Vargas Era: Twilight of an Idol.” It will give you a good jumpstart into Brazilian history right before Vargas rose into power and his long lasting legacy.

Good video. I would add that a series of articles published by The Intercept revealed the political persecution against Lula and the PT in the Lava Jato case- -- including leaked messages (between Moro and prosecutors) that show that Moro (a judge) assited prosecutors in building their case and advised them on which charges to bring against Lula, with the explicit goal of preventing Lula's comeback in 2018. This is a massive violation of due process and it partly led to Lula's corruption convictions being overturned by the Supreme Court in 2021.

Nice vid My son is brasileiro and my wife is brasiliera ...and im now a permanent resident of brazil......so ive taken a recent interest into Brazillian politics too I reas a book called : "Beef, Bible and Bullets. Brazil in the Age of Bolsonaro" Written in english by a gringo journalist who is married to an brazillian. And it talks about what rose bolsonaro to prominence: Namely as the title said the agriculture sector, the growning evangelical movement in brazil (second largest eelgious sect outside the catholic) and the gun lobby And it made an interesting point about Bolsonaro....he was a very long time congressman as you stated....but he didnt really ever matter in coalitions prior. He was kinda a lone wolf who grabbed tv time when he can spouting the intense social conservatism talking points. He kind of was a joke to the other politicans and not a big player. Which would help him dramatically in a post Lava jato Brazilian landscape. Hia lack of being a insiders insider made his message sing to those upset with the scandals

Genuinely insane history. Brazil honestly has the potential to be as powerful as the USA it has so much going for it. I think it needs to avoid wannabe dictators like bolsonaro, and root out corruption and crime and poverty. It needs a strong economy but an economy that works for all not just the rich. It’s a hard battle. There’s a lot that needs to be done. Also it should be stated that the US loves to interfere in South America. Like the military dictatorship likely only happened because of a CIA backed coup in 1960s due to them fearing the country becoming socialist.
