“Brazil is a country that has rapes every minute of women and young girls, and we think it doesn't make sense for us to be condemned for the rest of our lives and re-victimized for having been victims of violence. STORYLINE:
Women rights defenders protested in São Paulo to pressure the National Congress to archive of the bill that would make the punishment for any abortion after 22 weeks of pregnancy equivalent to homicide.
With the slogan "Children are not mothers," demonstrators gathered in Sao Paulo’s famous avenue "Avenida Paulista” wearing black and holding candles.
Some of the counterprotesters who showed up to the march were men.
If passed, the bill could punish women undergoing abortions with up to 20 years in prison.
Convicted rapists could receive shorter sentences than their victims, which is why the bill's author is including an increase in the rape penalty to up to 30 years.
Critics argue that women seeking abortions late in their pregnancies are often victims of child rape, as their pregnancies are typically detected later.
The South American nation allows abortions in cases of rape, an evident risk to the mother’s life or if the fetus has no functioning brain.
Beyond these exceptions, Brazil’s Penal Code imposes between one- and three-years’ jail time for women who terminate a pregnancy.
The bill was proposed by Sóstenes Cavalcante from the Liberal Party, which is also former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro's political group.
Due to the backlash and the many protests nationwide, this bill is not expected to be voted on until next year.
