São Paulo has the some of the worst traffic problems and highest public transit fees in Brazil. We followed a protest for the Free Pass Movement that started with a peaceful march and ended in the violent clubbing of enraged protestors.
--
In October 2012, just before the São Paulo mayoral elections, we followed the Free Pass Movement of Sao Paulo in their celebrations of the National Day of the Free Pass. They have celebrated the date since 2005 to mark the victory of the Florianópolis MPL chapter, when the population surrounded the City Hall until a bill guaranteeing a Free Pass on public transport for students was approved.
Today the fight for a free pass on public transport is not only for students, but for everyone. Yet despite large protests occurring all over Brazil, they remain largely invisible to mainstream media - but not to the batons from the local police.

I spent 3 months in Brazil a few years ago and it's crazy expensive there. In many ways more so than the US, and your jaw will drop when you find out how little people earn in many professions (including police officers).

Can you imagine that even if the state of sao paulo would drastically improve public transport by offering more lines and more buses there still is a huge traffic problem. Getting from a to b in that city is a nightmare, you can basically get stuck in a street for an hour or even more. I myself am from the The Netherlands and I can tell you exactly what time I will arrive Amsterdam by train/bus/metro/tram if I leave from the other side of the country. The difference amazes me.

This is a reflection of what every other urban centre must face: ease of transport and ready /safe/affordable public transportation is essential to the structure of a city. I have no doubt this will rise as an issue in situations with global attention - FIFA and Olympics. If this really is a city of such affluence, more should be done to maintain and expand infrastructure. Bike lanes, light rail, and shared/carpool lanes - easy additions to city streets.

To compare relative costs it's better to use the ratio of the fare to the median wage. Then you can also compare the ratios to the disparities in quality. If you want to get into more detail you can also look at the external, shared costs of different modes of transportation such as pollution, which have financial impacts, such as increased cases of asthma and other ailments.

korea is usually has cheap bus transportation and they use the public transportation EVERYDAY. yet it's easy to get around. but it's some things here that are expensive, for instance imported clothes is pretty much robbery. and also electricity is expensive as well. but they should really look into public transportation and try to keep the price to a minimum.

Interesting reportage, i'm from mexico and the situacion is tehe same here, avobe all in the bigs citys like D.F. Puebla, Guadalajara Monterrey and especially in small citys like xalapa veracruz where the vehicular road have been poorly planned, and the public trans port is a bullshit. which is the name of the song in the end of video?

I agree. Over here in Finland the price of public transportation is also ridiculously high. The irony is that the government wants the use of public transportation to increase in order to combat pollution (that is to say; less people using their own cars and whatnot, and using more trams, trains etc), but the prices are so high that many people travel as bums.

Hmm, 3 reals? Thats about $1.50 Canadian. We pay $3 for the TTC in Toronto, $3.25 for Mississauga, Oakville and Brampton transit, and 3.75 for the VIVA bus. The only good system is the TTC. I think it's time for a protest here.

São Paulo has a large metropolitan train system, with over 12 lines, wich complements the 6 metro ones. It's not perfect, but it should have been mentioned, as the trains are very important to the lower class population, as they reach the outskirts of the town. The fight for a lower fare have this lines as a priority, as the metro lines are usually on the richest parts of the city, where the people prefer cars to dislocate. As for the World Cup, the stadium has a metro station beside.
