My mother made this dish late 50s-60s. She called stewed tomatoes. She added margarine instead of oil. She always served with liver and onions and mashed potatoes. I have since learned that in order to absorb iron in liver you need to serve with a high vit C veg or fruit. She was smart. It was delicious.

Me too! Macaroni and tomatoes is my comfort food. I grew up in the south but have raised my children in the northern midwest, so they have learned a variety of foods over the years. But if I make a pot of macaroni and tomatoes, they come running! I've never had breaded tomatoes but I've heard of them and I fully intend to make this recipe.

My mom and grandmother made tomatoes this way using leftover biscuits or dumpling dough. Never used store-bought canned tomatoes -- fresh out of the garden or home-canned. Tomato dumplings has been a favorite dish of mine for over 70 years (I rarely have leftover biscuits). Never dreamed such a dish would be sold in a restaurant.

I want to make this, but I think I'd like it with macaroni better. I have an aversion to wet bread. To make it with macaroni, do you cook the macaroni first, or put it into the tomatoes to cook? It looks delicious, so I will try it with the toast.

y mom used to make Breaded Tomatoes using tomatoes out of the garden and she never put flour in hers or sugar while she was cooking the tomatoes and she never put onions in hers, the sugar was put on at the table by each individual and the bread was put in without being toasted. I agree every dish tastes better with onion in it and you can never have too much onion. I make it now occasionally using canned tomatoes and I put the sugar in while cooking.

This has to be what I had in school in the southern Sandhills of North Carolina in the 50s and 60s. Nobody else in school liked it, so I would trade everything on my plate so I could have lots of it. Definitely trying this. I can't thank you enough. God bless you both.

I made this recipe for Thanksgiving. I used gold & white, hand-painted antique sauce dishes for each person, and the red tomatoes looked so nice. Everyone loved it. Thank you.

Stewed Tomatoes over boiled Red Potatoes was my childhood favorite and the best time to enjoy that meal was in the winter time. We lived out of our cellar pantry till the garden started growing each year. We were rich because we ate well and didn't know we were actually poor folks. To this day I would pass up a steak for a pot of stewed tomatoes and boiled taters with the jackets on them. Thanks for sharing with us. Fred.

I am so glad to have this recipe! My sweet Mom passed forty years ago and I never found her recipe, however I do remember she would broil the bread in the oven with butter and sugar on it, plus add fresh sweet corn cut off the cob. No oil but butter instead, and a little sugar on the fresh chopped tomatoes. Thank you!!

I’ve eaten a version of this all my life. And I’m 77 years old. My favorite version is to cook 1 # of Conecuh Sausage, (made in Alabama) leaving rendered oil, bits & seasoning from the sausage in the pan. Make a roux with those, in same pan, to peanut butter color. Add a can of diced tomatoes, juice & alll. Stir it in, add water or milk to make consistency you like. Season with salt & pepper if you wish, but, the sausage will have seasoned it some. So, taste check first. And , serve it over buttered toast or grits/mashed potatoes, etc. We have always called it tomato gravy here in the Deep South! Enjoy! NOTE: check your grocers for Conecuh Sausage.

I've been wanting a good recipe for breaded tomatoes all my life. In grade school our cook Mrs. Zimmerman made the most delicious breaded tomatoes that I have ever had. If this is as good as her's, you will win the Gold Star from me. We used to stop in Corbin, Ky. every vacation back home to Tennessee and we always stopped at the original KFC. So good. Good video.

My mom used to make breaded tomatoes and I hated them but I know she didn’t toast her bread and I only ever remembered her using the whole canned tomatoes. And definitely no oil that I recall. Anyway, your story was very interesting. That’s great that “Taste of Home” made a point of letting you know the recipe would be published. Most magazines would just post it without letting you know. And neat that they have the article displayed in the restaurant.

My husband was a district manager for Kentucky Fried Chicken for 17 years. We were at a convention in Hawaii with him & have a photo with him. I remember when Taste of Home did the restaurant recipe request but I didn't see this recipe in it. It's probably better than my grandma's. I'm going to have my husband watch this video while I make these breaded tomatoes.

Colonel Sanders is quite the legend! My father met him when he was working in a grocery store in Corbin, Kentucky, home of the original KFC. Mr. Sanders shopped there for his meat. It's neat that you got to meet him and have your picture made with him. I wish my dad had a picture with him. I really hope you enjoy the breaded tomatoes. We think they are marvelous! I worked with a lady,Toby as she was called.. years ago when I was in my early twenties,; she was sixty plus...She mentioned this recipe many times as she and her spouse were foster parents from the late 1950s to late 1970/s..and she mentioned there were many along with her biological children in the home;...this recipe was a staple...and it was also accompanied by homemade biscuits....just hearing her talk of different dishes that she made that would feed the children with this one being almost her ' badge of honor"...Toby is long gone now...but I will always remember her talks about the children, her delicious dishes of food to stretch the budget and this recipe.Nostalgia runs through my veins...Thank you for this!

I was so excited to see this because I have actually never had it but because it will be a reminder of my late paternal grandma, I want to make it😋 As a side dish, my grandma would slice in half some day old biscuits, put them on a pan, top with some of her own canned diced tomatoes, a sprinkle of sugar over that and pats of butter. Popped it in her toaster oven until the butter was all melted and then served. All these years later, that was one of the best tomato dishes I have ever had. So I am anxious to try this. I can not eat raw tomatoes but cooked ones, I love ( yeah, go figure). Thanks for sharing this and your fun story 😊
