Jim Carrey Grinch: Chaotic Neutral Mike Myers Cat: Chaotic -evil-
@mac_sour
@mac_sour 5 жыл бұрын
I'd describe Mike Myers as the Cat in the Hat as more lawful evil. Or even though it's not really an alignment, maybe a lawful chaotic sounds more in character. He breaks the rules for his own gain but he has a contract, and a set of rules to abide by. Pretty sure at the end of the movie he even abandons his own contract to help the kids fix the house if my memory is still intact. Pretty evil, pretty lawful, pretty chaotic. Not even sure why I'm sitting here at 1 in the morning arguing what alignment the 2003 adaptation of the Cat in the Hat is supposed to be. I'm really tired.

Grinch on the other hand might actually be chaotic good if I'm right about my own personal theory that he's actually the embodiment of the holiday spirit (which would explain his grumpiness while the whos in whoville have lost the meaning of christmas to greed, and also that he's the only grinch in the whole story)

I, for one, just can't banish from my mind the 1970s cartoon adaptation. It's probably the version of "The Cat in the Hat" most children born before about 1995 saw first, even before they read the book itself. Allan Sherman as the Cat is, to put it boldly, one of the best casting decisions ever. Thing One and Thing Two are a hilarious thrill. And I even think it's great that the otherwise anonymous goldfish is named "Krinkelbeim," and that by his behavior and his very voice he goes out of his way to make us hate him. Add to that the colorful animation with its "Main Street psychedelic" aesthetic so common in cartoons of the early '70s and that unforgettable jazz/light rock score, and what we've got is a true classic.

This is more of a minor thing than something that concerns the entire movie as a whole, but I really like how the Mom character is implied to be sort of a combination of both Sally and Conrad's traits. In the scene where the Things are trying to slow her down by pretending to be police officers, near the beginning of the scene you can hear her groaning "oh no", like she's been in a similar situation. Which therefore implies that, even though she appears to be more like a Sally/"Control Freak", maybe in the past she was more of a renegade. There was also the deleted scene where she's seen playing Conrad's video game system, which kind of implies the same thing but in a more obvious way. Which, to be honest, is probably why it was cut.

Okay, maybe BREADSWORD is right that Beau Klein's The Cat in the Hat does have a few redeeming qualities. I actually think the Grinch shares the same surrealism and craziness that this movie does. Like Jim Carey's Grinch is absolutely insane, and everything in Whoville seems like a brand-new thing that would never exist in our world. I think the difference between the two is that the Grinch's story is a lot more structured than the Cat in the Hat. Which I think makes The Grinch better because it embraces Seuss's style, while having a story that actually makes sense and is satisfying.

Eh I mean I personally find it like a fever dream, but in the bad sense. The environments are always desaturated and dimly lit, there's a heavy use of the Dutch angle, there's often ominous background music, it all gives me an intense sense of discomfort for the entire movie. Dr. Seuss liked to be surreal but not in a way that's alienating or disorienting. I think Cat in the Hat hits closer to that sweet spot where people can be comfortable within the insanity. A lot of people don't share my sense of discomfort while watching the Grinch, so I dunno maybe it's just me.

I think the grinch is bogged a bit down by the strange and unnecessary romance plot between the mayor's wife and the grinch. The cat in the hat has way more room to be surreal since it's plainly about having hog wild fun.

I'd maybe had them read to me before I was old enough to actually remember, but Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham were the only two that stuck in my memory. Nostalgia critic comparing Myers as the Cat to Jim Carry as the Grinch:”Carrey had a clear character: an eccentric grump. And his face was expressive enough to work its way through all that make-up. Myers seems to have two expressions: "pedo smile" and "happy-I-sh*t-my-pants". On top of that, Carrey had enough energy to become one with the costume. He could work with it to show how fully animated his body could be. With Myers, it always looks like he's restrained by it, like he's fighting against it. Every time he's done with a take, it looks like he's gonna pass out on Dakota Fanning. Even the costume just looks like a cheap cut out you stick your face into! Except it's being worn by one of the Wayans brothers from White Chicks. I don't necessarily blame Myers for this. It's just, it wasn't the right casting.” Any comments?

I will never understand why people hate anything that has a meaningful story (other than it goes over their head because they really, really want to hate it) The Grinch was a character who's storyline was about redemption, cat in the hat was more so a character that was more of a teacher about not taking everything so seriously, about having fun but not to the point where the fun can get you into some pretty tight situations where the consequences are detrimental. Cat in the hat was literally everything a Dr Seuss adaption should be and playing it safe really wasn't the best way to go for most of the movies. Thank you so, so much for making this. I've needed an explanation for why this movie is good (aside from the obvious dirty jokes and surrealist themes). You went beyond the meme and didn't give too much credit to this movie, while also avoiding the trap of disregarding it and scoffing at it because it's so quirky. Your videos are some of the most well thought-out and well-orchestrated on this platform; I can safely put this video, along with the Treasure Planet analysis up on some of my all-time favorite videos. (don't get me wrong, your other videos are great as well. I just personally love these two)

Wow...this is...deep...philosophical even. As a kid, I considered this movie a guilty pleasure. And for the most part, I still do. But you ingeniously changed the perspective that the film can be viewed in. What was considered a filthy movie that went far below expectations can now be appreciated as a work of art for subverting them. I'd love to see more videos in a similar format. This was interesting to say the least. Excellent video.

I still love this movie, and I’m an adult. I now caught all the dirty jokes and I loved them. The Cat really is entertaining for any age and gives the viewers to be entertained without having to be faithful to the boom, rather it’s faithful to the feel of the book, and the protagonists to work out the problem on their own and come together as family and siblings. I have a younger brother and I’ve thought about how am I related to him when he and I are polar opposites while being the same at the same time. We have chaos in our lives and we should embrace the crazy things in life and take risks to better ours and others future. Nowadays, movies are playing it too safe and not taking risks or taking too much risks and not playing it safe enough. The cat in the hat is that middle ground, crazy, yet stable for adults and kids to enjoy. They don’t hide any of the jokes and they use wordplay to emphasize a dirty joke.

@michaelvessel4604

They aren't really critically panned (as the first one has a 66% while the second one has a 81% on Rotten Tomatoes), it's just that those movies often get overlooked and are just tossed aside as just "kids movies" most of the time even though those are perfect examples of great family movies imo. Plus, the first one kick started the career of M. Night Shyamalan (who wrote it), which is a plus for me.

I will admit, there are multiple scenes in this movie that are quite funny, but the majority of the film is boring and monotonous. I didn't care about any of the characters while watching the film and Mike Myers really dropped the ball on a lot of the jokes. from my perspective it sounds like many of your arguments come from a place of nostalgia. there's nothing wrong with that. what you like is what you like, I just disagree. I think that a lot of the fans you've already accumulated over the past 4 videos and few months are probably a little jealous of you (myself included), not because you're so smart and handsome but because you have an opinion , something to say about it and the courage and will to put in the effort to go out and say it. Ironically, that describes the majority of Nostalgia Critic's videos. NC reviews are meant to be taken with a grain of salt, but it's pretty easy to tell when he's just playing the character and when he's making genuine points. His formula is a few minutes at the start for comedy relief or a skit, 20 minutes talking seriously (with a couple of moments of him overreacting sprinkled throughout), and then a few minutes at the end for comedy relief or finishing the skit.

Hey dude, a couple of things. First off, I want to appreciate all the videos you made. Your Treasure Island video was the start of my interest into movies as a form of art in media and expression. I never really watch that many movies but ever since your Treasure Island video, it just spiraled out of control into other Disney Movies and so on. The fact that I managed to watch your Treasure Island video at least 3 times honestly shows how great and captivating your videos are. You make amazing videos and just thank you for peaking my interest in movies. From the how you go over the history, making and impact of each movie, your videos have so much charm (almost as much as your voice) to them. Second, I knew you had something coming up but I never expected this. I always adored this movie as a kid. However, despite growing up, I am still entertained by this movie but I always found something special about it that wasn't represented by its crude type of comedy. This video just kinda pieced it all together to me on why I love this movie so much. I know it isn't an accurate adaptation but it doesn't meant that it should be held to such as an indication of its worth. Anyways, keep doing what you are doing. I love your videos and thank you for just kinda sparking a passion in me I guess. Your videos led me to have a strong appreciation for Treasure Island and disdained for others like Hercules.

The surrealism is exactly right - and one of the reasons critics hated CitH. As we stumble into an oppressive, fascism (ie corporate owned and operated government) we need the blatant absurdity tossed in our faces. And you seem to get it. Also, in the end you certainly appreciate the middling strength of the film. Good video. Great presentation. Hope you get a chance to do more releases more quickly. Then again, you probably have a real job, real life, and real struggles. Thanks again.

Fascist governments aren’t owned and operated by corporations. Their actually typically command economies like the Soviet Union. I think the word you’re looking for is “anarcho-capitalist”, like Rapture from Bioshock.

6:33 Samurai Jack fans: Do you remember the episode, where Jack ends up in a rave party? He's wearing the Cats hat. So who came up first with the idea to rave in the Cats hat? Wonder if there is any connection between this movie and the Samurai Jack series :D

as someone who works in art department, i drool over this film and the visual assets and properties of it. it really is everything you said from wardrobe to set to props. it's and incredibly world that truly does function to an extent. but the sterility of it is what really sucks the life out of the film for me. in addition, neither protagonist or supporting characters (mom and fish) show any level of character arch from the start to end of the film. they're completely reactionary without any sense of agency. there is no learning curve for them to make it through because they do not learn or grow throughout the film. The film is interesting but far from what you spend 15 minutes trying to sell us on. in the end though I think it is insulting to the film itself as well as the source material to repeatedly call this an adaption. This plays more like a re-imagining more than anything else and that's not a bad thing. just that word alone helps understand that this is not the story or the characters we are expecting from the title but a whole new take on them which the film is. in its own way it does this brilliantly though execution was heavily lacking from the entire cast. over all, i'd stick by you on giving it a 5.5 for that very reason alone. as a re-imagining, it creates new rules and convention for the story to happen in except that there really isnt a story that is trying to be told here. disagreements aside, I love your work and am glad i watched the whole video. thank you for the hard work and care you put into it and your other content.
