It’s not always easy to tell others that your child has challenges managing their thoughts or feelings. And it might not be easy for your child to express that either. Even though it's normal for people of any age to experience these challenges, our culture has told us we need to fear them. In this video, we ask why it is this way and what we can all do to give each other the support we need to get help.

It's really hard to manage your own thoughts. But they are just your own thoughts. They cannot do any more harm than you let them. You are your best #MentalHealth advocate and I hope peace can reach you soon if you are struggling.

My Mission is to eliminate the stigma associated with depression and suicide by promoting and encouraging not only the diagnosis and treatment of depression among young adults, but also the education of young people, their families, and friends about the disease of depression. A depressed person will observe happy people around him and feel as though it is impossible for him to ever feel that way. A depressed person may feel like they are a burden to others, especially family members or friends. For this reason, they may be reluctant to share their emotional experiences, further isolating themselves. There may be cyclical shifts in mood throughout the day; this can lead people to believe that they are not truly depressed because they feel a bit better at certain times of the day.

Quality video! I agree mental health is extremely important! There should be mental health education in schools to help kids better understand things like tough emotions, common disabilities, abuse. This would help to lessen the amount of ableism in general society as well as help kids experiencing abuse to report it to a trusted adult, and even lessen the amount of depression within the teenage population once teenagers report what they're going through more often.

The problem with society is that they treat a person with mental health issues as if they are "sick". The truth is we all deal with something others just deal with it a lot harder than others. Please encourage and build up others who deal with mental health issues rather than treating patients with mental health as "the help".

This issue 'Stigma', is ingrained in our society. It runs deeper than mental health. Sexuality, race, religion all carry heavy stigmas. It's because we are living in the past, our society is much less advanced than we think it is. The truth is only what you believe it to be.

The thing is, I'm disabled, and I don't mind joking about my disabilities; I just want it to be accurate. Non-accuracy creates real stigma. People start to think you are that way, which leads to social fear of those disabled people. I made a joke about myself begin autistic, "well, you know my thought process, object, object, object," it's funny because I'm not very sociable (at least off the internet) because objects are more concrete to me than people who change and make mistakes that I don't always understand (ie, my doll collection does what I want; it logically stays in place, but for some reason a human thinks it's smart to run a red light without looking; why? This is not a social way of thinking, but it's the way I think). This is accurate to high functioning autistic actions and thoughts, so I find it funny. However, if someone doesn't understand a social situation or they don't want a hug at the moment, someone asks, "what are you? Autistic?" Giving the impression that autistics are stupid and they don't like affection. I love hugs and I understand what people mean, I just don't always get why they act contradictory to what they say and for stupid situations, "Don't smoke," he says as he lights up a cigarette. Knowing facts about disabilities and eliminating the untrue stereotypes will eliminate stigma. Joking about disabilities, when it's accurate, is just like a person laughing at their own embarrassing moment, it can be funny; just don't cause false fear in people.

Facebook asked me, "what's on your mind?" Well, a friend posted something that got me thinking.... It was a post about a girl that says she has anxiety disorder.... I take issue with the term "disorder" and I feel that that word itself creates stigma that makes people feel like outcasts and causes more anxiety. When we classify something, such as ADHD, anxiety, bipolar, obsessive compulsive or autism spectrum as a "disorder", we first need to define "order". Who gets to make that call? The majority? Well, whenever we define or classify something based on the majority, we create a minority and a dichotomy of "oppressor" vs "oppressed" classes. This is why our society is so divided. "Order" is usually established by the social elites, the establishment, that dictate that society needs to function a certain way so people can be "productive members of society", which generally means being a good little consumer and taxpayer; cattle. Some of us don't want that and are forced to conform or be left out on the streets, literally. I know. I've been there... I've met many social outcasts living on the streets that are there because they are not looked at as people. They become their disorders. It becomes their identity. It wasn't too long ago that being transgender and/or homosexual were also deemed disorders, but we've learned to evolve past that and have worked towards ending the stigma that kept these people "in the closet." So, I think we should do this with all "disorders". Let's now redefine them as personality types. Obsessive compulsive personality type. Autistm spectrum personality type. Bipolar personality type. Attention deficit hyperactive personality type. Etc etc... Let's help these people, myself included, feel like they are welcome in society and end the stigma that causes anxiety and xenophobia. Let's not shove these people in the closet and label them as outcasts. Let's stop calling them disorders. Matthew C. Radford #EndTheStigma #WordsArePower

Matt: thanks Matt. We don’t use nouns to describe other health conditions, like that person is Hypertension or Diabetes. Why is it okay to say that person is bipolar or borderline. People are not their health type, they might have a condition but that’s not all their to their identity.

I agree with this but "what if" does nothing. People do things. There is no reason to say "what if this" or "what if that". The only way that these things will get better are with prayer, faith, and getting up to help those that are hurting.

That's never going to happen. The world is a cruel place where people try to kill one another and do things to each other. I'm sorry for being negative but it's true people are never going to help others unless it benefits them or just nothing. The world's is never going to truly change.

Having a plant-based diet with all colors of vegetables (especially legumes, broccoli, onion and carrot), grains (e.g. oatmeal and barley) and fruits (e.g. banana and avocado) is really helpful with anti-inflammation and providing various high concentrations of nutrients for kids’ growth. Melatonin in various fruits (e.g. banana and cherries) can help with a good sleep and a good mood. Oyster and Shiitake mushrooms also help with a good mood and kids' immunity. Avoid sweets and cookies. Ensure kids stay hydrated. Ensure enough exercise time every day to release kids’ extra energy. Culinary herbs (e.g. curcumin and tumeric) can also naturally boost kids' mood. Don't let kids take any mental health medications. Avoid buying too many toys or material things for kids as this can avoid emotional dependency on materials. Avoid letting kids watch too much TV but only selected great-quality cartoons such as Peppa Pig and Bob the Builder, and teach them to love reading - an active learning activity. Recommended books are selected high-quality children’s books with lots of animal and plant pictures, a good English-learning book and second or third language learning books - a second or third language can help develop a separate language system area in the brain that can provide extra thinking ability in the future. Learning to play an instrument also helps with building a life-long hobby, confidence and resourcefulness. Don’t forget that kids’ main job is to play and learn. Help them build a solid foundation in everything they learn, and don’t set a goal that exceeds their age ability is really the point. And teach them to always hold a positive attitude no matter what difficulties they encounter. Wish all kids can have a happy childhood!

It's easy to blame "the past", but the reality is that people in most modern countries are increasingly disconnected from one another. Prevalence of narcissism is expanding- including children. The family structure is seen as an inconvenience, and moral codes of behavior are quaint and silly. Maybe start with the present.
