Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental disorder that often involves intrusive thoughts, anxiety, and ritualization. While millions suffer from OCD, the disease is often misunderstood by the general public and misrepresented in the media and pop culture. 14-year-old Allison is an OCD sufferer who shares her personal struggles in hopes of destigmatizing the illness and creating a support community for others affected by OCD.

@@guppydotcom8134 anxiety is sort of a feeling. Anxious and nervous are synonyms, just like feeling depressed. Just because you say you are feeling anxious doesn't mean you're saying you have anxiety, same with people who may be having a bad day may say they feel depressed. One is a feeling and one is an illness

Yep, I have anxiety. I searched for help after my first girlfriend told me that punching my forearms and thighs before sleep was not normal, and waking up in the middle of the night, dripping sweat, feeling like you gonna have a heart attack almost every time might be more than just nightmares. Now I'm diagnosed and, whenever those people say they suffer from anxiety because they get nervous or shy or just don't have the guts to deal with some situations sometimes in their life just...make them so punchable.

I help my boyfriend through the same struggles and it’s really heart breaking, but you just have to be patient and supportive. Never rush someone with ocd. Always show your love and compassion for them, it really helps. Especially when it’s bothering them more. They just want someone to love and understand them for who they are and what they go through. To never judge or discourage their struggles, because it could feel embarrassing and cause insecurities. Just bring peace, love, and positivity!

OCD is not a mood. It's not just wanting everything straight or your Skittles sorted by color. It can look like those things, but the difference is there's an intense anxiety behind it that can make just living so much harder for the sufferer than the average person. Fun fact: people with OCD need more sleep than the average person. It's like running a marathon all day long but in your mind. This girl is tough to be able to go through it like that and come out stronger on the other side.

My mom once said "I wish you were one of those clean freak OCD people." Personally, my OCD has a lot to do with touching things, and obsession. I will have to walk in a certain place multiple times, or touch something a certain amount of times until it feels "right", and I also have a problem with whenever other people do things, it feels wrong to me. Living every day of my life is like torture. With the obsession piece of my mental illness, I constantly have intrusive thoughts I spend hours on end thinking about. They include violence towards myself or others, questioning my interests and hobbies even when I'm positive I like what I like, and unwanted sexual thoughts. To anyone out there struggling, I love you and hope things get better 💖

@@girlofanimation wow mine developed from my parents giving me PTSD and extreme anxiety and depression and I had no coping mechanism my whole life and they wouldn't get me help so I developed ocd before I knew it :( The worst side of mine is my germaphobia which gets worse if I feel worse it's nearly incapacitating but I'm just so tired and want treatment already. As someone who has pretty bad OCD, it's extremely debilitating. As she said, it can take you a long time to actually do something because every time you do it you have to do it again because it doesn't feel 'right' and if it's not right then your brain is saying stuff like 'If you don't do it right your family members going to die' or this is gonna happen or that's gonna happen. It's truly exhausting. This is why it's so annoying when all these people are like "Oh I'm so OCD" like the mother said or whatever. They truly don't understand just how exhausting and annoying it is. Thank you for this video Vice, thank you for giving us a voice. Thank you for sharing our frustrations. Maybe you can kindly inform them that OCD is an actual condition next time you hear them say it then. It's gotten to the point where "I'm so OCD" has become a saying that literally just means "I have the compulsion to be tidy." Most people who use that phrase aren't self-diagnosing themselves and they probably aren't thinking they have OCD. It's a phrase that has morphed from a real condition to an idiom of sorts.

I’ve found that sometimes separating myself from my brain helps? Like referring to my “ocd brain” helps me differentiate between logical thoughts and intrusive ones, so it starts to become easier to ignore really stupid (because they are stupid) thoughts. Idk if that helps, but remember that ocd is so clever and the more you try to fight/analyse the thoughts, the bigger that thought gets x

My family are convinced I'm faking it and attention seeking... I would tell them I'm not but it made me think what if I am? It's been 6 years now and recently because of how bad and out of control it's gotten (Mine is cleaning - myself, dishes, wiping my bed and the items I use, not sitting on our couch or hugging/touching others, etc.) I'm 99% sure I do have it but fixing it is really hard, so is being taken seriously by doctors!

My daughter just turned 11 and is diagnosed with severe social anxiety and atypical anxiety disorder. I could never imagine not supporting her. I got her a neuropsychological evaluation as soon as I realized she isn’t just shy and isn’t outgrowing it. It was really effecting her schooling and interfering with her life. I feel awful that parents refuse to seek treatment or acknowledge when there is a real mental health issue. It’s doing a great disservice to your child. I wish you all luck and hope you get the support you need and deserve. 🦋❤️

It's fantastic to see Allison already so advanced in her recovery journey. My OCD only really became abundant in my twenties, although I now understand teenage events a lot better now. There's no "cure" for OCD. The recovery requires a lot of education, really facing your fears, exposing yourself to the world, and realising that true self-compassion is the ultimate goal.

The O in OCD means obsessive.... you can become obsessive over anything with OCD. It is NOT about cleaning and organizing. I dont have OCD nearly to the extent of this beautiful child but I do have one thing where I constantly think my doors are not locked/shut. I will close and reclose my front door 5 times before I believe it's closed and locked. Theres no rhyme or reason to it but my brain just doesn't shut off until I repeat this process. I hate it. Edit : thanks for sharing your stories! And I didn't say that you can't have OCD about cleaning. I mean that the typical personal believes OCD is only for cleaning and thats not true. Becoming obsessed with cleaning is definitely something that happens. In other words, not everyone who cleans a lot is OCD, and not everyone with OCD is obsessed with cleaning.

I have OCD and this is very true. There’s been nights where my husband will hold me as I’m crying because I rationally know the fan isn’t rotating, but my OCD brain is telling me to check it again. Or checking the baby monitor again and again because I’m terrified it is shut off. Or getting up to walk to the bathroom every couple minutes because my brain is telling me I will pee myself if I go to sleep (which has never happened lol). It’s a constant war with your brain and it’s so tiring.

I had severe anxiety all my life into my early adult years that wouldn't allow me to do almost anything the other people my age were doing socially. It was hard to go to school, work or just to the store. I would pretend I was sick. Hide in a bathroom and cry. Not be able to speak. Self harm. Hyperventilate. Sweat profusely and think everyone noticed everything that was going on with me. I am just recently learning about the exposure method and compulsions. I don't have OCD but I can definitely relate to this. I still have anxiety to an extent but keep working on it, it gets better!!

I am very thankful you shared your story. I canNOT imagine the amount of complete exhaustion this mental health illness causes you, Allison. As the significant other of a man who has been diagnosed with PTSD and has permanent Psychosis from illegal drug use, I have an understanding of the importance of family support- I applaud your mother and admire her strength. I do have a couple of thoughts. As I listened to your mom and she was saying that people say that they have OCD over something minor. You know, honestly I would "toss" that term around when I did something that I was trying to explain away to other people who thought I was putting more effort into a task that I didn't need to. Or if I spent more time fixing something, rearranging something and people would tell me it wasn't worth it. I'm not saying it is the right term to use, but folks say things when they feel inadequate or "silly" for doing things and others and they are afraid others will judge them for it. We all have strengths, we all have weaknesses. If you continue to educate others about OCD traits, it could change the way people reference it. Now that I understand more about PTSD and Psychotic tendencies, I never say things like, "Don't be so sad, you should be happy" or "Just think happy thoughts", or during a psychotic break I understand why I must keep a certain tone in my voice in order to help calm my boyfriend down or to just be in the room so that he knows he's not alone. I am saying all this to make the point that a person never knows what will happen in life at any given point. The biggest thing we can do to help one another is go through hardships with them. Learn as much as you can about the situation and put yourself through every emotion, every heartbreak, every nightmare with them. Also, realize that the cross you bear may be lighter than another's or heavier than another. But we all will go through trials in this lifetime. Be kind; don't be offended if someone uses a phrase in a hurtful way, more than likely they are uneducated about the proper usage. And if you hear them, and you can- tell them about it and why it's not the correct term to use. Not only does this show your person that they are supported but it makes the "good" days so much more beautiful for BOTH of you. The other thing that I was curious about was during the part of the video when you, Allison's mother, was saying that she would ask you so many times if you loved her, was this the fear in her mind from thinking she wasn't "normal" and she needed reassurance or do you think it was the Obsessive trait of OCD? Also, do you think it would have helped and could it help today, if you told allison you love her as soon as you see her? For example, every morning when you both wake up. First words- "Good morning, I hope you slept well; it makes me h as happy to see you, I love you so much." I am asking from a place of curiosity. Mental health has become such an amazing part of my journey and my boyfriend's journey. I strive to learn and share as much as I can. God bless you, each and every one.

It really gets in the way of my life and a lot of people ether think that I am daydreaming constantly or just not paying attention and the teachers don't seem to understand. What really make I so bad is that I can't seem to get away from it and it keeps threatening to do something with kne of my biggest insecurities (can't say what it is for private reasons). It gets in the way of my conversations, my gaming, my school work and even going to sleep, basically my general life, so please don't joke about it. (For me it is like an evil god watching over me and controlling my life). I did try to make "good god with the power of my own mind, but thats a story for a different time. There was this case of a dad that couldn’t have his kids come over because he couldn’t let them sleep on their beds, he would iron bed sheets over and over and he would sleep on the floor to not crease his sheets. Basically its something that gets in the way of your life like many other illnesses ... like depression, someone can be sad but if you then stop seeing people, stop taking care of yourself, stop doing the things you like, if your sadness is getting in the way of your regular daily life for long period of time its most likely depression you know. Ocd isnt just perfectionism etc. Its something that takes time out of your day for a multiyude of days that gets in the way of your daily life eg. I have to be at school by 9am but if i dont take the right amount of steps within a square of pavement i have to go back to the start of my walk, this may make someone late but itd very distressing to not start again

OCD doesn’t even imply a detail-oriented person. it’s characterized by anxiety-driven repetitive behaviors. washing your hands again and again, checking the oven just in case every five minutes, hell, even just mentally remembering every conversational error you made in a day and repeating them over and over in your head because it makes the anxiety easier. sometimes, your OCD is entirely mental. no one sees it. all your compulsions are mental behaviors which consume your consciousness.

Hey💙, my OCD as a teenager was like yours. Compulsions all day, everyday, rewriting, rereading, counting, and all sorts of rituals all day. My OCD took 8-12 hours of my day at its peak. At 17 I did CBT on myself, for many months, I got a dog, which was a great stress reliver, I started mediation daily while doing the CBT during the time as well. For months I failed, the first, second and third time, but eventually I began to get better. I was 90% OCD free by mid 18, I'm now 26 and OCD lingers maybe once every three months and I just take a deep breath, resist the urge and it goes away eventually again. Severe OCD as I once had it is now in the past. There's hope, keep strong, so one day you can look back at your OCD past how I am now. Xo

I’m near tears watching this. Thank you so so much for sharing. Hearing from you and reading the other comments I feel so seen and understood. For years I’ve struggled in silence because I don’t present like what people think of when they think OCD. My house is a mess, my clothes aren’t perfectly ironed but behind closed doors I wash and wash and wash my hands until they’re so ripped up they bleed then wash some more because there is now blood on my hands. And getting up hundreds of times through the day and night to check the door is locked, the the trash is put away from where my dog might get into it, that all the doors are fully closed, the list goes on. This video and comments have shown me I’m not the only one who’s been absolutely suffering in complete silence for so long. The bravery it took for this young lady to share this is immense and I appreciate it more than I can say. I hope everyone struggling with ocd has been ok during the pandemic, I know it has made my day to day much harder with the repeat actions surrounding cleanliness of hands, clothes, and heightened anxiety and intrusive thoughts and I myself have lost many hours to it. You are not alone 🖤 I hope we can all find relief.

Allison is so beyond her years. She is doing so well and I am so proud of her. I struggle with Generalized anxiety disorder and clinical Depression. As someone who struggles with mental illness as well, this was super inspiring to watch and I understand what it is to be invalidated and made fun of for your illness. I dream of advocating for mental health and becoming a therapist in counseling. Lots of love, Bethany :)

OCD is one of those all encompassing conditions that, without treatment, will slowly take over your entire life. I knew of an extremely severe case once where a young man had to quite lite live in the bathroom in his mother’s house. His anxiety, compulsive behaviors, and intrusive thoughts were so severe he couldn’t function outside of this tiny little room. The good news is, OCD is one of the few psychological conditions that actually has decently high success rates with treatment.

I'm in college and we were learning about ocd in my psych class. I was excited to learn more about it bc I have it pretty badly. But through the entire class, the guy behind me was laughing so hard at everything the teacher was saying. I had to play it off in class but I cried all the way home. I'm really thankful for this video. I've been thinking for a while I might have OCD and this really helped. That thing with the photos happened to me a few years ago and I never knew it could be OCD!!! I've been thinking about it because my rereading has got so bad I can't do normal things and it's so tiring. It's really empowering to see how you expose yourself and how your mom helps. I find it very scary to try but I will, I need it. Also the reassuring thing happens to me a lot too! I'm thinking about finding a new therapist and it's just so scary to go into all this but at the same time I really feel like I need to do it and it will help. Thank you so much Allison!! My compulsions are also usually mental so it helped a lot, in general, to hear from you and your experience. You seem very strong and I can't thank you enough! Lots of love, stay safe!!

When she showed in the beginning the hair thing, it brought me back. I’ve done that sooo many times. Once I was going to a wedding and didn’t like the hairdo so I re did it so many times I missed the church service and part of the wedding and when I got there I had a panic attack where I lost consciousness and was rushed home where I woke up with Oxygen because I couldn’t breathe. Another time I suffered a bad fall broke my arm and couldn’t use it for two weeks, I had my husband do my hair and when he didn’t do it well it brought me to tears I couldn’t handle it. Of course that’s not everyday but the fact that it got to those extremes and the many other things like erasing things and writing again until they’re perfect, moving things constantly because I feel everything is crooked, having to re check things a million times, it really makes my life miserable at times.

I have Bipolar II and OCD, and for me personally, OCD has been what has driven me to be suicidal for most of my adolescent and adult life. It’s debilitating. It’s excruciating. And I wish more people understood how minimizing it is and how much harder it makes it for people with OCD to talk about an already silent illness when everybody walks around making jokes and saying “I’m so ocd” like it makes you quirky. I owe my life to the professionals who have helped me get to a manageable place, having both OCD and Bipolar. I will end on a happy note and say that the affirming and earnestly sympathetic comments are truly heartening, and I am so immensely proud of this strong, smart, brave young lady and her considerate mother. Seeing her face her compulsions and her mother supporting her made my heart swell. Thank you, Vice, for this video and the one about living with Bipolar Disorder.

I was crying the whole time watching this, I wasn't aware of other things like erasing and not able to write words when they are dictated, spend my whole life thinking I'm so dumb that I can't write what other ppl dictates. I can feel her while watching, the stress, the anxiety and even the headaches when you're unable to satisfy yourself from doing something like her ponytailing her hair. I'm glad to see that her mother doing her best to make her daughter well. Somehow it's less stressful when someone understands and helps you.
