So many of of you loved "Godzilla Minus One" and asked us to review it that we knew we had to check it out -- and we're so glad we did. Christy and Alonso have a rave review of the film from writer-director-visual effects supervisor Takashi Yamazaki, which is a throwback to classic Toho monster movies with seamlessly realistic action sequences. See it in a theater if you can, especially in IMAX. Starring Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe and Munetaka Aoki. In theaters now.

The meaning of the title is actually in reference to the story: The war reduced Japan to “zero” …. then Godzilla shows up, plunging Japan below zero. This was somewhat explained in one of the trailers.

I enjoyed your comments! I have not been a Godzilla nor a movie person. But in the theater I had a very strange feeling as if I were a 7years old kid and had watched a great movie for the first time in my life. I have been forgetting to appreciate the depiction of the change of the human mentality without any exaggerations. I am thinking to come back to the theater on the last day. This was SO GOOD! I got this feeling after about ten minutes like this movie was going to be on a whole 'nother level, and I think that was born out though thr run time. The main character having survivor's guilt , along with a (un)healthy dose of PTSD was really moving and frustrating to watch. The way that totally random family formed, and then stayed together as years progressed was moving also. Aside from the fact that all the male characters had a habit of screaming histrionically at almost every conflict, I found the characters very grounded and three dimensional. I think the histrionics are a hallmark of Asian cinema, which tends to lean into melodrama more than wetsern movies do. Excellent movie!

Minus One actually refers to the fact that after WW2 Japan had lost practically everything, besides the terrible human toll, so it could be said it was back at zero point, where the had to start all over again. And then comes Godzilla and set them ever further in the past, so they are now below zero, at minus one. (This is THEIR explanation, not mine).

This is a unique time- a Godzilla movie that has drawn rave reviews from both critics and audiences alike m. Yamazaki’a film has managed to bring droves of people together with their shared experience watching his film. Isn’t this what movies should be about? Inspiring discussion and recollections? So glad he is getting his overdue accolades...Takashi Yamazaki: No longer Japan's best kept secret as one of its most extraordinary film makers. So underrated and under appreciated in North America. In "Godzilla: Minus One" he made a masterpiece of the Kaiju Eiga genre and a great piece of Japanese cinema, in general. You should check out his other movies sometime, notably, the "Always: Sunset On Third Street" trilogy, his live action adaptation of "Space Battleship Yamato" (the anime known here as "Star Blazers"), "The Eternal Zero", "Returner" and "The Great War Of Archimedes".

If Everything Everywhere All At Once can win Best Picture, THIS movie is easily worthy of one of the ten slots for best film this year. Won't win, but should be nominated. My favorite movie this year. Re: cheering for Godzilla, the movie was so much fun (in spite of the trauma) you couldn't help but root for Godzilla to do all the fun Godzilla things. In this light, my favorite moment was when in the climactic fight when the traditional Godzilla theme kicked in, and it was as thrilling as when the traditional Rocky theme finally kicked in during the final fight in Creed. Chills then, chills here in Godzilla.

Yeah, I'm not comparing the depth or quality of the two movies, just that if a non-traditional film like EEAAO can break through, then an equally non-traditional Godzilla film shouldn't be excluded just because it's Godzilla. That said.... I didn't like EEAAO.. In fact, I left the theater with an hour left. I totally respect the film, and was rooting for it to win, but it was unwatchable for me. It reached a point where it felt like the movie had to be wrapping up, I glanced at my watch and saw there was a whole hour left and just couldn't do it. Some movies aren't for some people.

I love that the current slate of Godzilla movies feels like the perfect reflection of both sides of the character. The recent Toho movies (this + Shin Godzilla) are modern versions in line with the original, where Godzilla is unquestionably the villain and a metaphor for atomic bombs/war/government mistakes. Meanwhile we also get modern, megabudget versions of the heroic monster fighter Godzilla that he became in the 60s with the American Monsterverse movies (KOTM is by far the best, idk why so many people think GvK is better). Just a great time to be a Godzilla fan! Also there's even more on the small screen with the Monarch TV show on Apple that is definitely worth checking out! Its set in the Monsterverse but its very cool to see at the same time as Minus One, since it also does a great job developing its human characters and how they are affected by narrowly surviving Godzilla.

The nostalgic 50s ost used in the city attack sequence was used to great affect. The train sequence felt 50s pecially with Godzillas slow walk with the train hanging out his mouth. You stick black and white on it and put it next to an old zilla movie you wouldn't be to tell a great difference.

Thank you both for reviewing "Godzilla: Minus One". This film demonstrates that you can produce a stellar film, rife with action, and that action does not come at the expense of telling an engrossing human story. Highly kinetic and stunning action sequences can coexist with a plot line that is deeply sympathetic to our humanity, and it can be done with a modest budget. This seems to be something lost on Hollywood lately, where the choice seems to be binary. Either you have a glossy 200 million dollar film, replete with explosions and glossy CGI, with forgettable characters, or you have an indie film with a shoe string budget that ruminates deeply on our shared humanity, but is bereft of action and moves at a glacial pace that only artsy critics will love. The truth is you can great action sequences, amazing visuals, and still balance a relatable human story. "Godzilla: Minus One" proves just that.

I totally agree. It's like all the purists who dump on "Godzilla: King Of The Monsters" from 1956 calling it an abomination when compared to the 1954 Japanese version. Both are great in there own way & both were made for two different audiences. I can say without any shame that it's pretty amazing how the U.S. footage was edited into the original film. But yes there's no reason why TOHO & the Monsterverse can't co-exist peacefully side by side.

The movie met my expectations, so I figured you'd like it a lot.

Thank you both for your review. Another important point about the movie is how it showed the physical and social effects of the fire bombing of Tokyo by the U.S.

The name being minus one does not mean its a prequel, it means after the war japan was at its lowest point, it was at zero then godzilla comes and puts then even further down to minus one. This movie is a reboot

The issue with most monster movies is that we just don't give a darn about the humans. They just get in the way. This movie hits the sweet spot where we are emotionally invested in the the characters and the scenes with the humans are almost as engaging as the scenes with the monster. This is simply so very much better than the boring big budget garbage Kaiju movies put out by the American studios. I would watch this 10 times before I would tolerate King Kong v. Godzilla. The monster is truly amazing as are the effects. This is well worth your time and please see it on the big screen to get the full effect.

Finally got around to seeing this last night & so glad I did. An unseen note & unheard convo were a little clumsy/completely transparent but I didn’t care. Everything else was handled so well it just didn’t matter and was happy to just watch it all play out. Kind of like my experience watching EEA@O, I was completely caught off guard as to my emotional engagement w/ it. Even found myself feeling bad for Gojira at times. Glad to see there are theories about the black mark & will happily show up to find out where that goes if it’s ever explored.

Going to see it here (in the UK) today and going into it pumped but also going to be emotional as I've watched multiple reviews on this film so I can't really say my opinion right now but tonight I will be able to say things about it

@@BreakfastAllDay I enjoyed it I also think it's movie of the year still can't believe it's budget was £15m but I agrree it was a lot more impressive as it was lower than that aa the director wishes it was that high. I was the only one that clapped at the end not sure if I could see a sequel (no spoilers don't worry)

Godzilla finally has even footing with his colleague Kong whose 1933 film(35 cent ticket, took time with no TV & Internet) put him INSIDE our soul. Minus one is the Godzilla more than a monster movie soul saving turn we need today as King Kong was needed back then ❤. Think about what happen after WWII, we rebuilt it instead of enslave it as the United States could have. Minus one is to prevent WWIII esp. internationally(quicker with TV and Internet) because with Nukes there will be nothing to rebuild 🎉 ? Plplplpljh

I agree that the US versions of Godzilla haven't been very good. In fact, Shin Godzilla is by far the best one in the past decade or so. Happy to hear it's scary too. Thanks for the review 🙏.

MASSIVE SPOILER WARNING : So there’s a theory going around that the black Mark on norikos neck are Gcells (long story short cells from Godzilla than can over take any hosts system it enters). As we see through out the movie Godzilla regenerates whenever he takes damage or even killed.if noriko attained the g cells when radiation and Godzilla “marking Tokyo his territory” than we can conclude that noriko died (as any person should taking that hit) but the g cells regenerated her and whatever parts of her that might have been destroyed. I can share a link that better explains this and shows even more examples. So the ending might not be even darker than on first view
@kaoo7563
@kaoo7563 6 ай бұрын
There are two theories: one is that this is the reason why Noriko miraculously survived, and the other is that it is a metaphor for the after-effects of radiation. In Hiroshima and Nagasaki, many people died of cancer or leukemia within a few years due to the aftereffects of radiation. Aftereffects do not appear in everyone, and some exposed people live long lives. However, no one knows whose fate will be.

So, the reason it looks so real and seamless... Alot of it is. They still used a rubber monster suit and a lot of practical effects, just layered with CGI to clean it up...

I have heard of reports here on KZfaq, that the film’s director was a big fan of the film, “Jaws”, so the scenes suggestive of that film were done in tribute to that film.

Characters in most Hollywood Godzilla films/tv series are annoying as hell. In Godzilla Minus One, the characters are likable, admirable and they provoke empathy while watching the movie. For the first time in a long time, I was not only hoping the characters would survive but did not despise them for taking screen time away from all the monster mayhem.

I was bummed I couldn’t go opening weekend. I’m soooo there this weekend even though all the IMAX and Dolby theaters are taken up by the “big” studio movies. Which IMAX theater is showing it here in LA?

I'm glad some theaters are swapping movies in the premium screens on the same day so that different movies are shown at different hours. Even though this might not earn top money, it deserves to be seen with best quality picture and sound. At least have this movie should early or late in the day.

It's really hard for a normal non-theatrical person like myself to understand the kind of work film auteurs do. It's easy to not respect that art. This is the kind of film that rocks someone like me. Spectacle after horrific spectacle coupled with the fine tortures of our humanity. Yamazaki puts it all on screen and in my head and I won't forget it ever. My most profound respect and thanks to him.
