Very true. All of Dave's material that I've heard was classic. Like when he bought weed from a baby in the projects, had to carry a gun while delivering pizza, or started talking to a cop in an old time gangsters voice. Faizon cannot light a candle to Dave when it comes to stand up. Dave leads you on a journey with his comedy, and connects it along the way. I'm thinking it may be a little too elevated for Faizon to comprehend.

He was on Def Comedy Jam BUT he wasn't a fan favorite back then like Martin, Eddie Griffin, Bernie Mac & Chris Tucker! Dave had a bigger white audience, especially when Half Baked came out! Black ppl didn't really embrace him until The Chappelle Show!
@TGF253 жыл бұрын
@Mister Happy 1. I saw his Def Jam set also...it was NOT that great compared to Chris Tucker & especially Bernie Mac's set AT THE TIME in 1992-93! It took us 10 years after that to get Dave Chappelle & genius that became The Chappelle Show! And that is Faizon's point! They passed on Dave Chappelle pilots & TV show pitches for TEN YEARS until Comedy Central bought in to The Chappelle Show, meanwhile EVERY OTHER BLACK COMEDIAN was getting their shows greenlit in that 1993-2003 time period before Dave.....even the late great Bernie Mac who jokingly begged execs to give him a chance after his Kings Of Comedy set! So, did Black people always buy into Dave? If we did, would he have had 20 FAILED PILOTS before The Chappelle Show in 2003?
@TGF253 жыл бұрын
@Mister Happy 1. His Def Jam set was NOT that memorable in comparison to Bernie, Chris Tucker & Eddie Griffin, who took off after their set, that's not my opinion, that's what happened! 2. After Half Baked(the weed movie you speak of) Neal Brennan, Dave's friend & co-writer of the movie, said in an interview that it got panned & trashed by critics so bad that they thought Dave's career was over at the time! 3. My point was, Bernie Mac getting his show greenlit before Dave, who had a bigger white audience than Bernie(in the era of Freinds/Will & Grace/Everyone Loves Raymond had 10s of millions of viewers weekly), is interesting considering Bernie jokingly begged for his show & Dave Chappelle, who had the bigger White audience was getting rejected until 2003! He was the last of his Def Comedy Jam alums to get a show greenlit.....but Dave was told FOR YEARS that he had the BIGGER WHITE AUDIENCE than his DEF JAM Peers outside of Martin Lawrence! So, that's why alot of comedians say Black People didn't know Dave until Chappelle Show! So like I asked you before, if Black People really Fucked With Dave & Followed Dave like you say, would he have had 20 Failed Pilots b4 Chappelle Show?

Yeah, when Faizon asks to quote Chapelle jokes, it's like...Dave doesn't have punchlines and stuff like that, he just talks. And it's very entertaining. I can't quote the Elian Gonzalez or Elizabeth Smart jokes from his early stand ups. They were thought-provoking and funny, not quotable. It's a different, more intelligent comedy. Faizon on the other hand goes for shock value.

He says Charlie Murphy's writing is what made Dave funny, but then goes on to talk about how The Waynan's family are beast, but everyone knows Robert Townsend was the behind the scenes person who made the Waynans. Then he trashes Robert for not working with Cosby like Robert Townsend was looking for a handout. Insult to injury is when Faison talks about turning down roles because they were "slavelike", but Robert Townsend basically made the playbook about black actors/actresses struggles in Hollywood with stereotyping. Hollywood Shuffle is a classic that paved ways for black actors. For Faison to trash Robert Townsend he has to be drunk during this interview.

There are intellectual comedians like Dave who are true to themselves, and then you have commercial-friendly comedians like Kevin Hart who perform dumbed down material in an attempt to sell more tickets by trying to be relatable to everyone. They each have their own achievements, but I am more impressive that Dave achieved success without losing his integrity or chasing commercial success. Like when he quit chapelle show because the network were trying to commercialise the show, the dude has integrity and is faithful to his life experiences.
