@@barbarusbloodshed6347 I think maybe it's because in BCS we're given permission to feel for all of the main characters and TRULY empathize with them, whereas in Breaking Bad we're kind of constantly reminding ourselves that Walt is a terrible person and no matter what he does he's basically irredeemable. At least, I think that's why I enjoyed BCS more.

The intro with Jane telling Jesse about how Georgia O'Keefe painted her door over and over because if you love something, you should experience it again because each time it's different but just as meaningful was symbolic of Jesse getting into a new relationship/falling in love again. The intro happened to be for the episode where Jesse meets Andrea, and it means that just because it's different, it doesn't mean that it's bad. It's just that. It's different, but it's just as worthwhile and meaningful to him. Andrea might not be Jane, but that's okay. It's a great way of showing that Jesse is ready to move on and try to love again, and that even if he does, it won't take away what Jane meant to him. And I think that's beautiful.

To answer George's question about law enforcement getting shot and who gets the medical bill: civil servants like cops and firefighters get medical insurance as part of their employment. And since DEA is a Federal agency like the FBI, their benefits cover even more. Hank may not have been "on the clock," but he still has his personal insurance. Not to mention his injuries where indisputably work related because he was targeted for assassination as result of his work as a DEA agent. So finance wise, this isn't going to screw him the same way Walt's cancer screwed him, although the extra stuff like physical rehabilitation is an ongoing expense that adds up quickly. Hope that helps.
@mathewwadsworth3015
@mathewwadsworth3015 Ай бұрын
All true, except cops still routinely go bankrupt after injuries like this, just like everyone else in the US who allegedly has health insurance. The procedures themselves get covered, but copays can be astronomical and there are always other costs that insurance doesn't/won't cover. Our healthcare system sucks for everyone.

The funniest thing about Mike's casting, is that he wasn't even supposed to be there... In his first scene (with Jesse&Jane) it was supposed to be Saul going in to take care of things, but the actor was busy and Jonathan Banks (Mike) was nearby so they asked him if he wanted to do it. He did, and they kept him on the show from that point! There's a few crazy 'coincidences' like this, that made this show even better than originally intended!

People call Fly filler a lot, but I love it. It's the only episode I think where Walt and Jessie truly have a completely honest conversation with one another, and I think George is right about the fly carrying a lot of symbolism with it. Hell, Walt having to keep Jessie steady as he almost falls from up high dealing with Walt's contamination seems like a great visual metaphor, the tenseness of the small act, seeing the ladder falter. I think it's just because it takes place in one room mostly and has a lot of humor peoole think it's uninportant, but how could you ever hate on Bryan Cranston's comedic acting? I think a lot of this show works because of it, especially when Walt is being so cold, inhuman and cruel it is almost comedic in itself.

I think it's called a filler episode simply from a technical standpoint. It was an episode that didn't require a lot of budget. That doesn't mean it wasn't important or wasn't good by any metric. I happened to really enjoy that episode precisely because of all of the insights into their psyche.

It was the other way around (akshully... sorry). The fly episode was filmed in 2010 and by that time the only movie Johnson directed was The Brothers Bloom which is not bad but didnt make him a stablished director. He directed the fly episode and then Fifty-One and then Ozymandias and those directorial works, alongside Looper which was produced in parallel, garnered the reputation he now has. If anything he was given the opportunity because it was a filler episode, but i dont think the fly is a filler episode anyway.

the fly episode is a fan favorite because it fill like a filler episode, but if you see it in the context of the narrative and the characters is a very important one. is what call "bottle episode" which usually has the objetive of force two o more character to open up or confront about problems and ideals the will later develop in the main narrative. i think every simbolyms that george theorise can be apply, but to me the most important bit is that Jesse for the first time in this season can talk hostly, at least as much as they ar confortable to share, and use this hunt for the fly to interact. an then the go out of the "bottle" and jesse is still making bad decision and walter is till obsessing about a fly, but at the very least the are a little bit closer than before

George's interpretation of the fly makes perfect sense, but I always took it as Walt's suspicion that Jesse was skimming product. He didn't notice the fly until he realized the numbers were off, so it was literally "bugging" him. And he is particular enough to be certain that his math would be exact, and smart enough to know the most probable cause. Walt has that line that if the contaminant isn't dealt with it puts the whole operation at risk. Even at the end when he tells Jesse "if you get caught, I won't be able to help you" just like he fell asleep while Jesse was wobbling at the top of the stack. He cares more about Jesse than to be angry with him, but is instead worried about his safety.

George’s question about Walt falling from the walkway having no cut. The cut is hidden as he’s laying on the floor. The stuntman does the fall and when he’s on the floor they lock the camera and bring Cranston in before they push in on his face.

@simonfrederiksen104 Ай бұрын
26:00 On the Insider Podcast for "Fly" at about 26:34 in, they discuss this shot, or rather, the two shots that they stitched together. Essentially, the fall is a stunt man, plain and simple. When Walt is on the ground, that's Bryan. Editor Kelley Dixon: "A stunt man fell, and then got up and moved away, and Bryan went and got in the position and then we move in close on Walt with the fly landing on his glasses."
@RyanWieber
@RyanWieber Ай бұрын
@26:00 If interested, Simone is right, the stunt of Walt falling to the ground was actually a visual effect, where a stunt performer did the fall, and then Cranston swapped into the same landing position on the floor (turned face from camera) and then they morphed between the two on the floor. This is why the camera only starts moving after the stunt performance is done and the morph handoff is finished.

To answer your question about who foots the medical bill in Hank's case. It would be his insurance provider that he has through his job at the DEA. Even though he was suspended, he was still employed by the DEA at the time, he was just suspended from active duty while the investigation was ongoing. Also, even if he was fired, usually there are provisions that there is a sort of cooldown grace period that you technically have insurance coverage for, even though you're no longer employed by that specific employer.

Also when you have medical insurance through an employer that is unrelated to whether ur on the job or not at the time. Thats your personal medical insurance. Usually the place of business has their own liability insurance, so it something happens on the job or during the course of your job it would go through their liability insurance primarily, and your personal medical insurance secondary.

As for Hank's medical bills: Hank is an employee of the DEA, a federal agency, and is eligible to enroll in insurance plans offered to federal employees. Almost all employees sign up for it. US gov't picks up half the insurance premiums, employee pays the rest. So yes, Hank likely has health insurance with catastrophic coverage.

Regarding the insurance question: I’m a firefighter in the United States. We get health insurance through the city government (we pay a monthly premium and the city pays a monthly premium). If I were to get injured on or off the job the insurance would cover a certain amount based on the amount I pay per month. As an example, I had an emergency surgery to have my gallbladder removed. The total cost was the equivalent of $41,000 CAD, but with insurance I only paid the equivalent of $375 CAD. One thing though, if I were to get injured on the job, let’s say shot while responding to an emergency call, if I could not return to full duty within one calendar year I would be medically separated from my job and placed on disability. I would only be receiving 66% of my salary when l was injured and would not be eligible to receive my pension/retirement. Many other fire and police departments work this way

You're half correct, they actually split the shot into a static frame and exchanged the stuntman taking a fixed position, then switched to a cgi template of Walt to Brian. It is subtle and well made, but when you concentrate on a point and know how it is done you can see it ( nothing wrong with that) After the fall the stunt person holds himself to one of those metal handles, that is his still position and then it switches, they made a few movement frames with the cgi dummy and then when it is being positioned to lie down, it switches to Brian Cranston

But do you, George, understand those who did root for Walter, even to the very end? It seems that rooting for a character (or even for someone in real life) has less to do with whether or not that person is morally 'worthy' of our support than with wether or not that person is, well, a person, human, with all kinds of sides (including funny ones), some of which we can relate to. Even though Walter does horrible things, and is -- let's not mince words -- morally evil, he is human, and as an old Latin writer said, all that is human is known / close to us. We're close enough to Walter to see his suffering; to even realize when his suffering is self-inflicted (he could have taken those loans; he could have been less self-centered). And that... makes us want him to be happy. To somehow become the person we know he could be. I guess because... if Walt can do this... then maybe we can, too. 🙂

Regarding Juan Bolsa being killed while on the phone with Gus - it was Mexican Federales that did it (the Mexican government's police force, like their FBI). This was because of the twins attempting to kill Hank, a federal agent, on US soil. That's a huge deal and could very easily escalate into an international incedent. In such a situation, the Mexican government must do something, which leads to them taking out a major cartel member because everyone knows the twins were cartel. So, Gus did not and could not order such an action directly, but manipulated a situation where it happened. This is the catalyst that leads to the cartel Civil War - the Mexican side vs Gus. The men who attacked Chow's place were Mexican cartel hitters. Chow works for Gus

Though the correct name is opossum, the Virginia opossum, found all across North America, is colloquially, and nearly universally, called a possum, as in the phrase "playing possum", derived from their defense method of playing dead. The way it slowly pushes in, the white noise slowly drowns out the sound of the dinner conversation, then quick cut to him with the door open, trying to think of an excuse for what he's doing, just says "I have to go". From Skylar's perspective Walt was sitting there staring off into space, suddenly jumped up, grabbed his keys, his phone, etc ran to the door, opened it, then snapped out of his trance, said "I have to go" and left.

I remember watching that final scene from Season 3 in it's original broadcast, and saying right away that it just won Aaron Paul the Best Supporting Actor Emmy. Brilliant performance!

The fact that someone could make the statement "how could you like a show where you don't root for the main character?" and having to clarify that you can enjoy a character without condoning their actions is, uh, concerning. Are some people really that clueless? (rhetorical question, unfortunately I know the answer is yes).

@@PRATIK1900 I mean, I can think of examples; Breaking Bad of course, House of Cards, Death Note, Invader Zim... You don't (shouldn't) want the main character to win in any of those shows, it doesn't mean they're not entertaining.

The Fly is an important episode! It's not an eventful episode but it's a processing episode for the characters! So much happened in the last few episodes, the show needed a moment to decompress!

Fun fact: In 2016 Bryan Cranston starred in "The Infiltrator" which was a movie based on the autobiography by Robert Mazur, a U.S. Customs special agent, who in the 1980s helped bust Pablo Escobar's money-laundering organization by going undercover as a corrupt businessman.

this show came out during a "transition period" in TV an entertainment as a whole, where stories would no longer have "a guy to root for" because there wasn't "a mission" for any "hero" to fulfill. stories were long and complex, and weren't exactly _stories,_ they were _chronicles_ the difference being, in a story you want the lead character to succeed, and you embellish the story to that end, to make it look good. in a chronicle, you just tell the event, without taking sides. that's why the cinema of the late 60's and 70's got IT's transition period with westerns: westerns were more chronicles than the epics of the time, based on European stories, taking a lot from Norse storytelling with their tales of heroism. we're still looking at this in TV and gaming, with lots of narrative adventures that you can play in any style you want.

George, I'm not entirely sure how medical benefits work with jobs like law enforcement, especially being high risk for injury. But regarding Hank's injuries I believe you're thinking of Worker's Compensation in a general sense, which is the employer's coverage that specifically covers injuries while on the job. In any case, an employee typically also has an individual/family plan for medical benefits which involves general coverage outside of injuries and care that happen while specifically working. The quality of care for either of those is usually dependent on a specific plan that was previously elected. Also, in the case of leaving employment, a program called COBRA usually carries your benefits for x amount of time after leaving a job if you don't have a new plan in place.

While Schrader was under suspension, he was still law enforcement so he would be covered. They still have issues with medical items that are not covered.

FYI, when Walt falls off the railing in "Fly" there's actually a VERY subtle special effect to hide the use of a stuntman for the fall itself - after the stuntman hits the ground, there's a really fast computer "morph" effect merging to a new shot of Bryan Cranston on the floor, right before the camera starts moving to zoom in on him. It took me a couple of rewatches to catch it! :)
