I think you are supposed to honk your horn while passing someone going the same direction on a 2 lane road. The driving without a steering wheel is probably a old law to cover super old driving contraptions that had alternate ways of steering the vehicle (but would now also apply to the tesla yoke).

Florida's loud music law takes a different perspective, I think. If someone can hear music 25' from a car (especially with the windows rolled up), then the Driver is certainly not going to be able to listen for important things, like car noises, other car horns, and probably most importantly, SIRENS from emergency vehicles. The steering wheel law is because tillers were a popular method of steering early cars, just like riding down a hill in a little red wagon. It wasn't as precise (and consequently not as safe) as a steering wheel, just like riding down a hill in a little red wagon.

Most laws against open shoes also exist because many people had accidents due the shoes getting snagged on the gas/brake pedals. You would be surprised how many people get rear ended because someone got their shoe tangled with the pedals on stop and go traffic.

I don't feel like this makes a ton of sense in a car, but I see all those idiots riding motorcycles in shorts and T-shirts. As for shoes, I'd think driving barefoot would be fine (I've done so many times) but certain types of shoes like heels, flip-flops, heavy boots, and so on, could slip off the pedals, get caught on them, hit the wrong pedal, or just be excessively cumbersome.

As a person who's been in a motor vehicle accident I can definitely say I am very happy I was wearing my work polo, jeans, and my shoes. My shoes were worn pretty good but the sole kept my right foot, that was shoving the brake pedal down, from getting anything worse than some terrible bruising on the bottom and a bummed up ankle. I got a cut to the knee which would've been worse if I was in shorts or no pants. The seat belt really worked together with the airbag and I had some bruising from the seatbelt on my shoulder and chest but I can't imagine how bad that belt would've sliced me if I wasn't wearing a shirt to pad it.

There are some exceptions to that law, the one I remember is that in a vehicle produced before a certain date, you don't have to wear them if the car didn't originally come with them, however if they're present, you still have to wear them I'm pretty sure. It mostly exists to "protect" old/classic cars, by not forcing you to have to modify them to have seatbelts.

I know the loud noise from a car ordinances seem pretty tedious, but the biggest problem is actually safety for the driver. If you have your radio up so loud that people can hear it a good ways off, then it will be harder for you to hear things like Sirens from an emergency vehicle or other cars honking at you to avoid a collision. That said, 25 ft is pretty short.

@teamxcelap2

@@g.b.8836 That definitely depends on the state and the circumstances. In most places, the intended purpose of the horn is to warn other motorists of a potential Collision. The anti sound law has little to do with actual safety, instead it's an Anti-Teen, Anti- Minority Law put on the books to give police an added tool for harassment. The old law had decibel ratings, which makes sense for keeping things quite but this is too arbitrary. I wonder if you van ticket a cop or ambulance since they emit sounds you can hear from greater than 25 feet. Or garbage trucks, delivery vans, ect.

I live in Florida(in a pretty big, densely populated city) and see that music law broken multiple times every day. I have also been in traffic with police and people blaring their music. I've never seen anyone stopped for it. I don't think it's a commonly enforced law. But keep in mind, it could be used for probable cause if they are looking for a reason to stop someone.

The "It's Illegal to Hunt from a moving Vehicle, unless it is a Whale" law is maritime law that was adopted for use. This is so that when this law was originally written (most likely in the 1800's) it did not impede the very important economic process of 'Whaling'. So not stupid per se, just very dated.
