When I lived in South Africa, the police actually advised that you don't stop at a deserted red light if it's the middle of the night and it's a dangerous area.

I wish I could hit the thumbs up on this comment a thousand times. I live in Toledo, where half the population thinks the passing lane is their own personal fucking lane. I used to do field service for all of the united states, so I have a lot of experience driving in most parts of the country. I've never seen it as bad as it is in Toledo. If I was a cop I would spend all fucking day pulling these assholes over. And I'd find every goddamn violation I could on their car and write them as many tickets as I could.

An innovation I’d like to see in areas with harsh winters (e.g. Minnesota) is a separate program for winter months that extends the yellow duration. Ideally, sensors on the light or connection to a weather service could extend those durations even further when its currently snowing, or has snowed in the last 12 hours (roughly how long it takes plows to get to smaller roads and intersections, after plowing the freeways and highways first). How wonderful it would be if we could have 1980s tech-viable and cost-effective solutions in the 2020s.
@joshm1668
@joshm1668 2 жыл бұрын
@@slippydouglas There is technology available called Dilemma Detection where the light will extend green and yellow time if it detects an incoming vehicle travelling at high speed in the assumption that it would not have sufficient time to stop. Whether or not this gets installed depends on your local DOT's budget and judgment. I'm just the engineer who recommends and times everything, but if it doesn't get approved, unfortunately there's not much I can do. A lot of DOT government employees are older and are not as eager to try out new technologies.

I live in Oregon. I want to be able to pump my own gas. When I'm out of state on a road trip, I can almost always just pull up to a pump, fill up and go. In Oregon, though, if it's busy, you end up 3 cars back in line waiting while 3 pumpmonkeys try to service 12 pumps at the same time, so you spend so much time waiting in line to wait at the pump once you get there, and then wait for them to come take the nozzle out when your done. For a few months during 2020, due to COVID, they allowed us to pump our own gas, and it was bliss. And fun watching people stand around confused while trying to figure out where they went wrong in life.

Not strictly true. Cheshire police are constantly posting on Facebook where their mobile speed cameras are. While it can come under “preventing the course of justice” for you to be convicted of that crime the CPS would have to prove that you posting the location prevented someone doing 40 mph in 30. Picture this: You’re a Pennsylvania driver in the middle of the night on a farm road when suddenly your car starts beeping at you. “Oh no maybe I have an engine warning” you think to yourself. When you check the dash board, the beeb is now a steady tone, the Heads Up Display shows a red square, a light on the dash board says “ACQ LOCK” and an unlabeled button suddenly lights with the words “WEAPON RELEASE” flashing. As you try and process what’s going on and before you decide what to do, the car makes a decision for you. Suddenly, your door panel flips out and launches an AIM-9 Sidewinder that flies about a mile in front of you. As you slowly drive past the area where the missile detonated, you see that the road is clear and there is nothing around you except for the odd smell of hamburgers.

As much as I want to agree. We pretty much have to have speed limits these days. Too many distracted drivers and, of course, our road conditions are utter garbage because no one in America wants to pay the little extra for "road tax" so that States can afford to maintain them. My state had a road tax on our ballot recently and 90% voted against it. Now that Winter is ending, our roads are literally falling apart with potholes everywhere. Sure you could argue that people don't vote for tax increases (interestingly enough, my stated voted for extra taxes on medicinal weed to fund cancer research, go figure, we really want our weed) primarily because the taxes rarely go where they're supposed to because politians just give themselves raises, taking from the new taxes instead of diverting them where they're supposed to go. Here's a fun fact. All tax funds currently provided (as of 2017 and 2018 numbers anyway) are more than enough to pay for the US government's spending. The problem is how much our government gives to other countries rather than leaving them alone and letting the different organizations get those fundings instead.

Someone else here mentioned that sometimes the gas station is really busy, and there are substantially fewer pump jockeys than gas pumps, so you have to sit around twiddling your thumbs and going bananas waiting for someone to come around and filler up. That would drive me coo-coo. Just pump it yourself, it's faster and more convenient. It's cheaper too, which is more relevant today than it's ever been!

My uncle, a Master Sergeant and a fucking looney of a nutcase did that in PA in his Interlude. Pulling up to the right, and firing a flare rocket, every god damn mile. Just to annoy the police. In one instance, he pulled right in front of a police cruiser, fired and drove off. The cruiser now followed him. He repeated his 3 times until the police halted him and ask why the fuck is he doing that. His answer: I'm a law abiding citizen and I love my country. So I follow even them silly laws. The officer actually looked it up and said: Sir, you don't have to do that anymore. Just proceed normally. My uncle then responded with: Why officer should I give you a reason to harass or shoot me?! I'm following them laws! The officer let him go until about 1,2 mile later he pulled to right and launched a rocket again. The police officer said then: Look sir, we can't arrest you, but if you want we can give you police escort with sirens until you leave the state. Just stop firing them damn rockets. My uncle took it and had a police escort in front of him with blaring sirens until he left the state. Nowadays you would just get shot. That was almost 25 years ago.

Also it prevents people from doing stupid s*** at gas stations such as using gasoline to rinse off their cars driving away with the pump still attached it dramatically decreases the number of spillages do two tanks being overflow two people not paying attention to them also make the gas station little bit safer because there's more than one person keep getting an eye on everything

In South Carolina, we have a similar archaic law to the Pennsylvania one. It's technically law that you have to fire a gun in the air at every rural 4 way crossing before proceeding. (I'd assume for the same reasons as the PA one.)

Australia has some weird road laws 1. it illegal to splash pedestrians at a bus stop 2. it illegal to leave your car door unlocked 3. it illegal to drive with a dog on your lap 4. it illegal to wave at someone from your vehicle 5. it illegal to transport more than 50 kg (110 lbs.) of potatoes in your car 6. Taxi cabs in Queensland are required to carry a bale of hay in the trunk 7. It is illegal to leave your car keys inside an unattended vehicle 8. If a urinal is not readily available, it is legal to urinate on the rear left tyre of your vehicle.

In Minnesota, there is an office called the "Office of the Revisor" that scans all the state laws and tells the legislature which ones are out of date. One year they said -- "There have been no streetcars in Minnesota for 20 years!" and the legislature repealed all laws referring to streetcars. Then in 1994, Minneapolis opened a light rail line, so the state had to pass a bunch of new laws regarding how you drive around light rail trains.

1:37 that is actually legal in California. You can run any red light if you find that it is staying red because it is defective, and it is safe to cross the intersection. This applies to bicycles too. If the traffic light fails to detect a bicycle waiting on the trigger, it is defective. The hard part is that if you get cited, you have to be able to prove the light is defective.
@devilsoffspring5519
@devilsoffspring5519 2 жыл бұрын
You can't run red lights, not even the police are allowed to do that. Nobody can. You have to stop first, check to see if it's safe to go through, and only then can you go through if the light is stuck on red (or if you're driving an emergency vehicle.) "Running" refers to not stopping at all--just barrelling on through as if it were green. Very, very illegal, and if done deliberately, will probably get you arrested for reckless endangerment. Running red traffic lights is EXTREMELY dangerous--don't do it!
