Kenneth Eugene Smith is scheduled to be the first person in the United States to be put to death with nitrogen gas after the Supreme Court refused to stop the procedure. Experts have repeatedly warned that nitrogen toxicity may cause the condemned person to suffer unnecessarily. Kim Bellware, a reporter with The Washington Post, joins CBS News with more.

I think there's some key details about this case that are missing here! Maybe you bleeding hearts can answer my questions here? Surely Mr. Smith allowed his victim the right to appeal the death sentence he imposed upon that woman? We've given Mr. Smith 35 years worth of appeals. So didn't he do the same thing to that woman he killed? Now surely Mr. Smith thought that he was giving his victim a merciful death by stabbing her 8 times with a large knife? Did Mr. Smith try hard to make amends with the victim's family for the loss that they have suffered? Those are definitely some key details that I would like to know about this case!

Let's assume that the purpose of the death penalty is to deter homicides. As opposed to, say, vengeance. Let's compare two countries with roughly the same standard of living: one, the US, with the death penalty, and the other, Canada, without the death penalty. The homicide rate in the US is 4.96 per 100K of population. The homicide rate in Canada is 1.76 per 100K of population. So the homicide rate in the country with the death penalty is 2.81 times higher than the homicide rate in the comparable country without the death penalty.

No this isn't about Sympathy for the person being executed. It's about the fact that a judge sentenced him to death but he did not sentence him to torture and he's been tortured once already with a failed execution and now he's being experimentally killed with something that could go terribly wrong. Giving the government that kind of power is a very slippery slope

The totally crappy thing about all of this is that the judge sentenced him to death, but a jury of his peers sentenced him to life, and the judge used judicial override to sentence him to death. Judicial override has since been Discontinued in the state of Alabama . they did not apply this retroactively. I don’t understand why there’s not more outrage about that. , about the fact that a jury of his peers sentenced him to life in prison .They are going to execute this man. Nitrogen, hypoxia done right will not be a bad death for him. I hope they do it, right. I know that sounds awful to say, but they are going to execute him. I hope he does not suffer because the punishment is death, not torture you are right.

@fatovamingus
@fatovamingus 3 ай бұрын
@@ctb3343 with firing squads the soldiers or executioners are told that not everyone has live ammunition to kind of relieve them of the guilt. Because there was a problem with that it was traumatizing however the recoil on a dead cartridge is so different from a live one that the concept of a conscience round was stupid and everybody had guilt Whenever there was an execution. so firing squad sounds cool and everything but it burdens a bunch of guys every time. So there's no good side of that there's no fairness in that either . I think the reason this fiery debate over the capital punishment is because we all have the same moral compass and we know that it's wrong.

What’s always been more than a little confusing about the death penalty in the US is that the vast majority of those supporting it also follow Jesus. Yet Jesus was quite explicit about stuff like this: “You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.” (Matthew 5:38-39) Personally, I’m against the death penalty for one main reason: risk involved in executing innocent people. If I were on a jury where the possibility of the death penalty were involved, I’d be mighty reluctant to convict as there could always be the possibility of a mistake. _12 Angry Men_ is essential viewing here.

Yes C02 is an inert gas that causes oxygen hunger , and anxiety. Nitrogen is used in assisted suicides because it is known to cause euphoria. Airline pilots are trained to recognize its effects. During these trainings if the oxygen is not reintroduced back into thier environment they would die. They actually have videos on the Internet, showing these trainings, and the pilots reactions to the trainings. I do not understand the way that they have decided to do this because it does make them more subject to scrutiny. An expert came in and said that they should use a hood or a bag in addition to the mask and I would think if they were trying to avoid scrutiny, they would do it exactly the way the expert said. During my death penalty class, we discussed nitrogen hypoxia, and our professor, who is a PhD, was against the death penalty, said that she would prefer nitrogen hypoxia to the other methods of execution that are currently in use, because it would be more humane.

Here's a quick bit of info to bring people up to speed on things. At sea level, the air that we breathe is about 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and trace amounts of other gases contribute to the final 1%. As for alleged suffering during suffocation, please understand this. When we try to hold our breath, the discomfort we feel isn't due to lack of oxygen or a surplus of nitrogen. It's due to a buildup of carbon dioxide. If you've ever taken a trip to a place located at a higher elevation, such as Denver, Colorado, did you feel discomfort as though holding your breath, or just kind of winded and weak, instead? Well, there you go, a mild sample of what happens when oxygen is replaced by nitrogen. We evolved to try to keep CO2 levels low by breathing it out; our ancestors who were unsuccessful at this were removed from the gene pool. So, inmates who are deprived of oxygen but are not exposed to excessive levels of carbon dioxide (since they can exhale that just fine, and replace it with more nitrogen), won't feel the discomfort of holding their breath, but instead will just go unconscious and die. And that's a far better fate than what their victims endured!

To quote one of my favorite musicals “and crawling on the planets face, some insects called the human race, lost in time and meaning.” Maybe God created humanity as an experiment which has proven to have gone horribly wrong. But they don’t have the heart to destroy us and rather let us destroy each other.
